AIBU to think DD's driving instructor should have started teaching manoeuvres by now?

DD has had about 25 lessons with her instructor and has still not got into 4th gear, parked, done any other manoeuvres or used a sat nan as per the new test.
I have taken her out in my car and she is quite proficient. I have got her into 4th and 5th gear, got her to do a 3 point turn and reverse.
She is reluctant to ask her instructor if she's ready for the test as she feels he would have said if she were. She doesn't want us to ask because she wants to be grown up about it but we can't help feeling she's paying over the odds as it could be weeks to cover all these things.
She passed her Theory first time ,last month.

I had 12 lessons paid for by my parents for my 17th birthday. I didn’t get out of 3rd gear and no manoeuvres.

I changed to a new instructor after that block of 12. Within my first lesson with new instructor I’d completed manoeuvres and 4th gear.

I honestly think as my parents paid in full upfront the first guy just strung me along.

My driving instructor was like this I didn't do the parallel parking manoeuvre until the hour before my actual driving test! I wish I'd have changed earlier on in my lessons it really did feel like he was dragging it out for the money.

Everyoneiswingingit · 08/09/2018 15:47

Yep, we bought the first 10 too. I'm arranging a free assessment lesson with another instructor(independent) so will cancel her lessons with other guy for now. Thanks all, wish I'd asked sooner now!

Been a while since i passed, but similar happend to me. I didnt do manoeuvres for a long time, and when i was telling people about my lessons the question always cropped up about the manoeuvres. I actually thought i was just really shit. I did go out in the car with my dad and he got me to reverse and was abit Hmm about the fact i hadnt yet been shown. The next lesson i had i mentioned that id be out driving and done some bits we hadnt yet done in lessons and straight after that conversation she started doing them with me! I was ready to do them, but it was just being dragged out. I was suspect its the same with your daughter! I stayed with that instructor because i was to long into to want to move and refresh over again!

I stated learning in April, I have had about 25 lessons, but I have very high anxiety, and I need to take my time, I told my instructor this. If I am rushed,I panic more. I have done, forward and reverse bay parking, and next lesson parallel parking.

MaxTeyon · 08/09/2018 18:30

20 hours for me and that was only due to a 6 week waiting list for a test. She should be done and dusted by now or close to.

ShatnersWig · 08/09/2018 18:38

I was in 4th and 5th gear by lesson two.

itbemay · 08/09/2018 18:39

My dd passed after 23 lessons, I'd be thinking they're stringing it out especially if you think she's a good driver

topcat2014 · 08/09/2018 18:46

4th gear means 30mph, so surely that should only take a few lessons?

Mind you, on my birthday soon it will have been 30 years since my first lesson, so what do I know :)

sunshineroo · 08/09/2018 18:49

My first driving instructor wouldn't let me go round a corner for four lessons. I didn't realise how ridiculous it was until I told my mates...

nokidshere · 08/09/2018 19:05

My son has just had his 3rd lesson and he's done all sorts of manoeuvres and been in 4th gear already. She needs to ask him why she's not progressing as she thinks she should be

sprucelilly · 08/09/2018 19:42

He's very laid back. When she gets in from a lesson I always ask what she did and it's always the same.I feel reasonably relaxed with her driving , considering I don't have dual controls. she doesn't need prompting to indicate, change gears, slow down etc. Her weaknesses are reversing and manoeuvres because she hasn't done them!

sprucelilly · 08/09/2018 19:44

Sorry I've since name changed.

Aeroflotgirl · 08/09/2018 23:32

Wow a bit [envious] about all these people being ready for tests after 10 lessons, stupid anxiety and panic grrr.

Everyoneiswinginit · 09/09/2018 08:33

That's a shame Aero , have you tried meditation before a lesson?

DD has driven lots this weekend and just driven to work which involved a bit if dual carriageway and obviously 4th and 5th gear. She drove really well. DH will take her for some parking practise after work. Cancelled the instructor.

Aeroflotgirl · 09/09/2018 09:00

I do sprucelilly, I have had hypnotherapy, it is an achievement to sit in the driving seat, and to drive. I am so scared of the test, petrified. I am taking my time with learning die to my anxiety, it helps me not become panicky, that I have to to the test in X time.
