To refuse to take DC out on bikes on the road?

DC 8&6. 8 yr old has only learnt this year how to ride bike.
DC suddenly decided want to go to swimming pool, DH has drunk 3 glasses of wine, I have had 2. So no driving. DH wants to do a bike tour tomorrow with the DC.
Bike route to pool will be on the main road. I don't think its safe, DH thinks I'm being lazy.

Depends on the roads, depends on how well behaved your children are (as regards following instructions).

ShrodingersSturdyPyjamas · 08/09/2018 13:38

3 glasses of wine by half one in the afternoon? And he is judging you?

SilentHeadphones · 08/09/2018 13:39

as regards following instructions). not great. ASD child will follow instructions as long as they coincide with his wishes. They have little to no experience of riding on a road, we've only taken the, on cycle paths so far.
Are there drink-ride rules? I kind of think if I shouldn't drive then probably I shouldn't ride.

I think that cycling after a drink is a bit daft and although I may do it very occasionally after group rides (but not over the limit for driving) that taking dc as well is madness.

6 is too young to be riding on the road. I take my sensible 9yo out on country roads but not busier ones.

BikeRunSki · 08/09/2018 13:41

If you have had too much to drink to drive, then you have had too much to drink to ride a bike on the road.

Doghorsechicken · 08/09/2018 13:42

To be honest I think it’s more dangerous to cycle on a country lane than a normal road

MinorRSole · 08/09/2018 13:44

I don't think cycling or swimming are wise choices after drinking. Why are you both drinking in the middle of the day when you have children to care for?

Teateaandmoretea · 08/09/2018 13:44

Okay dog if you say so, MN is really yawnsome these days. Roads with no traffic are more dangerous than those with lots of cars .... Confused People really will argue with anything.

Fireworks91 · 08/09/2018 13:44

I wouldn't take kids cycling on a road after booze.

ExFury · 08/09/2018 13:45

I think if you’ve had too much to drink to safely strap your kids into car seats and transport them in a sturdy metal box then you are too drunk to take them on bicycles on the same road.

Eliza9917 · 08/09/2018 13:52

You want to go bike riding on the roads after drinking?

Teateaandmoretea · 08/09/2018 13:55

Tbh I wonder if it's a wind up on reflection. AIBU to take my 2 small children on bikes up the main road when half cut? Hmmmm.... Hmm

adaline · 08/09/2018 13:56

Why have you both drunk over a bottle of wine between you at 2pm on a Saturday?

SoftSheen · 08/09/2018 14:03

If you've had too much alcohol to drive a car, then you've had too much alcohol to ride a bike on the road. That's the main point here.

So far as allowing children to ride their bikes on the road goes, you need to plan carefully, rather than do it on the spur of the moment. Make sure they have helmets and hi-vis jackets or vests and that their bikes are in good working order. Then practice on a quiet residential road until you and they are confident that they can signal, stop quickly, etc. Plan your routes carefully so that they are mainly on quiet roads and cycle paths. Also consider whether your children are mature and sensible enough to maintain concentration, do as they are told, and react appropriately in an unexpected situation.

SilentHeadphones · 08/09/2018 14:34

As I said, I don't want to. DH does. Wanted to check if IABU. If we had planned to go out, we would have made sure one of us could drive.

Everybody is so mardy! What's wrong with having a drink st the weekend? Maybe it was with lunch?

Fireworks91 · 08/09/2018 20:22

Just seems a fair amount to have around kids by 1 in the afternoon tbh.

SilentHeadphones · 08/09/2018 20:42

It was with lunch, we ate our "Sunday lunch" at 12.

I think if you've had too much to drink to drive then you've had too much to be on the road, full stop.

glintandglide · 08/09/2018 20:53

“Today 13:56 adaline

Why have you both drunk over a bottle of wine between you at 2pm on a Saturday?”

This really made me laugh. Isn’t the obvious answer er, lunch? Lol
