Car insurance dilemma

User246 · 08/09/2018 10:12

I sent off for my provisional licence in July. They wanted further info so I returned all the forms and documents end of august.

Since waiting DH has bought me a car. In my name. Due to be picked up next week.

It looks like my provisional won't be here before we are due to collect.

DH is going to be a named driver on insurance anyway as I am fully aware he has to be in he car while I'm learning and he could need to take over should needs arise.

Right dilemma.... To get insurance for DH to drive car home for one day is £35.

Or would it be ok to get insurance in my name which would be £50 a month and would carry on for the year. (I would not get behind the wheel until licence arrives) all insurance asks is how long I have had licence...less than 1 month?

DH thinks this would be ok and isn't keen on the 1 day insurance as after that we won't be covered while it is at home for theft or such.

I'm unsure as I don't know how long until licence will arrive...or what if forms were lost in the post, etc.

On the other hand dh car insurance covers him to drive any other car as long as owner gives consent. Would this cover him to drive my car even if no insurance is held on my car?

I can get insured as main driver with a provisional.

Though obviously there are legalities that I need DH to be in the car too (or other driver with a full licence, over certain age etc etc)

This happened to me a few years ago. Car was getting picked up in July and due to request for medical details it took until the November for my provisional to arrive. We put my Dad down as main driver and me as the extra driver. It was easy to change when I passed my test and meant the car was fully insured and could be driven by my Dad in the four month wait period.

Yes I was just about to point out that the op can be a policy holder as a learner, as we have just taken a policy out in our daughters name, but op make sure you have your dh and even an other family member eg parents as a named driver on the policy as this reduces the premium.

Car salesperson here - every dealership I have worked at has offered free driveaway insurance. Some are as short as three days but most are for a week. Get your husband to get that insurance in his name and he can drive it home with no additional costs. Speak to the dealer to get the ball rolling.

chasinggarlic · 08/09/2018 17:49

gummi OP isn't a learner. She has NO license. So slightly different in terms of getting insurance.

chasinggarlic · 08/09/2018 17:50

the
Drive away insurance is no use. The car needs to be insured for more than a few days.

This often excludes those owned by a spouse.

Did you read the opening post? She needs to get the car home if her licence isnt back yet. Driveaway insurance will do exactly what she needs and will cover the car for a week after she collects it. I deal with DVLA on a daily basis so I know the timescales they work on, so if they've had the docs back for a week already, then her licence will be back imminently.

chasinggarlic · 08/09/2018 18:06

the of course I read it. The car needs to be insured until the OP gets her license. DVLA don't guarantee that will be within the time fo strains of any driveway insurance. Much easier to plan ahead to keep the car insured rather than hope for the best.

chasinggarlic · 08/09/2018 18:06

fo strains = constraints Blush

User246 · 08/09/2018 18:06

Right we phoned DH insurance and they don't add extra cars on temporarily.

We are going to call the dealers to ask if they will keep the car until next weekend which gives licence another week. If not we will take out a new insurance policy in DH name which we will then cancel when licence arrives and take out a new policy in my name.

You will also have to tax the car that day and I have a feeling that when you do that online it checks for mot and insurance.

RollaCola84 · 08/09/2018 18:42

I'm pretty certain you can't be the main person on a policy with only a provisional licence.

Yes you can be.

hannnnnnnxo · 08/09/2018 19:55

Can't you put the insurance in his name and you as a named driver?

If you this, ensure you get insurance in your name when you get your full license. Because if the insurance is his name and you’re a named driver, but you use it the majority of the time, and it would cost more to insure you it may come across as ‘fronting’ to the insurance company

safariboot · 08/09/2018 22:05

"Driveaway" insurance would buy you a little extra waiting time.

There are various insurers who'll do short term cover, usually up to 30 days. If you take out a 'standard' policy and plan to cancel, beware of cancellation fees.

safariboot · 08/09/2018 22:07

Also, keep in mind that car insurance is usually cheaper if you want cover to start in a couple of weeks, whereas if you need the car insured tomorrow the insurers know they can get away with charging you more.
