To ask you to talk to me about bronchiolitis while I'm sat up in the hospital :(

Baby is 14 weeks old and she has bronchiolitis. She's on vapor flow oxygen and being fed continuously through a nasal tube.
It's crap. Her stats are ok at the moment but I'm so worried shed going to deteriorate. She's so small and there's tubes everywhere.
Has your child gone through this? We're they ok?
I'm so tired but can't sleep I'm so on edge

My daughter had it at 3 months old. It was very scary but she pulled through and is now a v feisty happy 6 year old. Big hugs to you and your family Flowers

Jezzifishie · 08/09/2018 00:42

I had this as a young child (I was very premature and my lungs have always been crap so I had it at an older age than normal). Sorry you're going through this, hope little one is feeling better very soon Flowers One of my earliest memories (bizarrely) is getting up from bed after returning home from hospital. My family were all eating dinner, I wandered in and demanded cheesecake Blush

Mumof4under10 · 08/09/2018 00:47

Had this with 2 of my daughter's. Luckily both started picking up very quickly. First one was 7 weeks old and in hospital for 4 days but feeding tube and box removed after 36hours. And 2nd was 6 weeks old and in for 2 days and feeding tube and box removed after 24 hours. They are both very healthy 4 and 6 year olds now. Do try to get some rest and sleep. She is in the best place.

Whatsnextforus4 · 08/09/2018 01:12

She just looks so small and poorly at the moment but they bounce back quickly don't they!

Our little girl had it at 4 months and it is scary, she bounced back fine, had it again last week at 21 months and just a bit of an ongoing cough. Hope your DC improves soon!

theycallmebabydriver · 08/09/2018 01:30

DD was admitted to hospital with it when she was a week old, it was awful sitting and watching her working so hard to breathe. I fully sympathise Flowers DD got over it in about a week and was none the worse for the experience.

She's in the right place and she will come through it. It looks awful but everything will be ok.

icedgem85 · 08/09/2018 01:42

My little boy had this at 9 weeks. He looked terrible, he was so pale they thought he was white (he's black) and he just looked so tiny and helpless! But a few days later he was home and happy and now he's a healthy little toddler

Lweji · 08/09/2018 01:53

DS had it several times. At some point, four times in a year. So, brace yourself for this possibility, but he recovered quickly once steroids were given and he was always fine the next day through the medication.
It is scary, and the doctor the first time didn't help. Angry

It's also not easy to detect as they seem fine one moment and then crash the next. His first time, he seemed fine coming to hospital with the cold air of the night, but then I had to push for him to be seen faster because he was going down. Sad

Wishing your LO a speedy and complete recovery. Flowers
I'm sure she'll be fine.

itswinetime · 08/09/2018 01:55

Yes they do kids especially babies get sick fast but when they get the right treatment which it sounds like your little one is the bounce back quick to.

What day do they think she is?

Whatsnextforus4 · 08/09/2018 04:39

She's only day 3 today. She got really poorly really quick so they've said prepare to get worse before she gets better as day 3 and 4 are the worse. She is doing well though. So glad to hear all of your little ones are doing well it's just so worrying when they're almost panting to breathe Sad.

Flowers a Paediatrician once told me that babies are incredibly tough..he said that he' is always astounded at how they can just bounce back and get on with things. Your baby sounds like she's doing very well if days 3-4 are meant to be the worst.

Sending you love.xxxx

ModreB · 08/09/2018 06:11

DS2 had this 3 times in 12 months. He is now a strapping 6 footer. The worst was when they put a drip in his head as the rest of his veins collapsed.

Babies are tough, so she will be fine even though you will be wrecked.

SENSadMum · 08/09/2018 06:29

I have twins and they both had it at 8 weeks and were admitted a few days apart. One ended up in a c - pap machine in high dependency. They both spent two weeks in hospital fed through a tube. It was utterly heart breaking and so I really feel for you. No lasting damage though.

mammynowanauntyIRL · 08/09/2018 06:55

Yes ds had it at 6 weeks old, just kept out of hospital his first Christmas several more times until a hospitalisation similar to your dd when he was just gone 2 & then I discovered halotherapy, salt rooms. He hasn't taken an inhaler or nebuliser since, he's almost 5 now. He had so many antibiotics & steroids in those first two years & I worried so much for him but halotherapy is amazing.
His potassium & salt levels were at rock bottom too as nebuliser was diluting his blood due to the amount of them he needed.
Hope your dd improves. ThanksThanks

peppapigkeepsthemquiet · 08/09/2018 07:08

Our son was diagnosed with it at 6 weeks old.
We’d seen 2 doctors in the days previously who just said it was a cough so I was shocked when we went for a routine check up and he was blue lighted to hospital.
He didn’t need oxygen, just monitoring.
All better a week later so think it was mild.
2 other babies from our antenatal were admitted at the same time.

Pleasegodgotosleep · 08/09/2018 07:12

My lg had this at 4 weeks old. Stopped breathing and was resuscitated in the ambulance. On to cpap machine in High Dependency Unit and tube fed for 2 days then head box and feeding for 3 more. Suction every 2 hours. They weren't sure what caused it so antibiotics by drip for 2 days in case it was bacterial. Veins had collapsed so canula was placed in her ankle. After we got home she developed a viral rash so badly she looked like she'd been scalded.

It was awful, the worst few days of our lives particularly the resuscitation and holding her down to get her lungs suctioned BUT it started 2 weeks ago now and you would never know there had been anything wrong with her! Your lg is in the right place getting the help she needs.

I, on the other hand am finding it difficult to recover and am massively anxious, having nightmares etc. Please take care of yourself and talk to someone if you need extra support when you get home. Flowers

StylishMummy · 08/09/2018 07:17

Currently typing this sat in my local paediatric unit with DD2 who was a 27 week premature baby, it's a bloody nightmare as she's in a 'head box', so I can't hold her or BF her to comfort her. As soon as she's out the box her SATs dropSad

Babies are bloody tough, this is my second preemie and it amazes me what they can withhold. Make sure she has familiar things around her, even if it's just an old t-short of yours, as it'll smell of you. Hope all goes ok Thanks

MrsMozart · 08/09/2018 07:23

No experience of it OP, but sending a handhold.

Please I hope you too recover okay.

IggyAce · 08/09/2018 07:24

My ds has this at 10mths, the cough is just awful and can last ages after they recover. After this we had a few emergency admissions for viral induced wheeze each winter. My GP recognised given my family history that it would likely be asthma so gave him brown and blue inhalers. He is now 7 and we haven’t had (touch wood) any episodes for the past 3 winters.

LittleMissedTheSunshine · 08/09/2018 07:25

My daughter had this at six months and the hospital didn't even take it that seriously. she was fine in a week or so. hope your baby gets well soon.

ginandnappies · 08/09/2018 07:26

My LO has had it a good few times now. (13ish months). Although I've been told they call it viral wheeze if it happens again? Anyway, he's been on steriods and nebulisers every time and he always perks up VERY quick. It's scary, and awful but they are so strong and resilient. For a while I was on edge and every cough would result in my head going into overdrive with worry but what will happen will happen. Hope your LO recovers soon.

ExCharlieBucket · 08/09/2018 07:28

Mine had it, he was fine, I can’t really remember what his treatment was but we went to doctors and he was over it three or four days later.

I’d no idea it could be a hospital issue, so sorry for you all worrying about your tiny babies!

WhatAmISupposedToBeDoing · 08/09/2018 07:29

The first time DS had it he was 3 weeks old, took him to the GP feeling a bit precious as we thought he had a cold. Got the fright of my life when the GP said he needed an ambulance urgently. But he was out in two days, and although he's had it a few times since its never been just as bad.

I hope your baby gets better soon Flowers

blondeambition91 · 08/09/2018 07:43

I am so sorry to hear about your baby and all the poorly babies in the responses.

My son is nearly two years now bit he first had bronchiolitis at 7 weeks. He was sent to A&E and rushed through to children's ward. He stayed in a couple of days and had a cannula and tube in his nose. He would also appear to stop breathing when he slept so he was on a monitor for that.

It terrified me. BUT he did pick up and was home in a few days. When they are so tiny and defenceless it breaks your heart to watch. I have always been told it is very common in the under 2s. And my son had it again at about 16 weeks. Then was rushed to hospital in an ambulance on his first birthday as he couldn't breathe. Again this was terrifying. He was given steroids, pain relief and an inhaler after spending a fair amount of time on a nebuliser. He was home the same night though and much better within the week.

Just wanted to share and reassure you that children are very tough and as scary as it all seems your little one will recover and be okay. Keep strong. Sending lots of love to you and your baby. Xx

MrsZippyLake · 08/09/2018 07:59

My DD had bronchiolitis and deteriorated on day 3 or 4, ending up on a c-pap machine and then in intensive care. However, she pulled through and every other baby in the two hospitals she was in (who were all there with either bronchiolitis or croup) also pulled through. She did have weak lungs for a couple of years afterwards due to the scarring but she is now 5 and - touch wood - very healthy.
