Unpaid leave? Where do I stand?

OP posts:
LeroyJenkins · 07/09/2018 19:27

No idea
Like your post title there's not enough information

Icklepup · 07/09/2018 19:28

Where do you stand with what exactly?!

gamerwidow · 07/09/2018 19:28

Need a bit more information I’m afraid. Have you asked for unpaid leave, want to ask for unpaid leave, taken unpaid leave, been told a day off has to be taken as unpaid leave etc.?

Didntwanttochangemyname · 07/09/2018 19:29

Check your contract

gamerwidow · 07/09/2018 19:29

In the absence of other information I’d say check your HR policies on leave.

FissionChips · 07/09/2018 19:29

Ffs, why are people starting threads with zero info lately?!

Glumglowworm · 07/09/2018 19:41

YABU

How the fuck are we supposed to guess with not even a hint at the situation?

Nicknacky · 07/09/2018 19:42

How can any one agree if you are being reasonable or not??

MycatiscalkedElvis · 07/09/2018 19:43

I’ve worked at my school for 10 years. Apart from having 6 months off 2 years ago when I was run over and suffered a shattered ankle, my attendance has been superb. Last year my fiancé was diagnosed with kidney cancer and it was touch and go but he thankfully got over it, and 6 months on, and now having one kidney he’s doing ok. My dilemma is, he has booked our dream wedding in Italy for July next year. We was going to wait a few years but since we’ve had a real shit time he thought, sod it, life’s too short and he went ahead. He has paid for my 2 adult children and partners and my brother and his wife to join us. So it’s a very small wedding but it’s what we wanted. The dates I’ll be off work are 10 days in term time . My school has just appointed a new head who has come in and shaken things up. Some good and some bad, I told her my situation and asked for unpaid leave ( not really expecting it, but hoping ) and I got a flat NO. She said I’m failing in my duty of care to the children etc.. I have a colleague that works part time ( I work AM she works PM ) and she’s offered to cover me for the 10 mornings I’m off. My head did say I could resign and then apply for my job back but no guarantee of getting it. Sorry for long post but didn’t want to miss anything out... Is there anyone out there who has been through this and can advise me? Can I push any further or just accept there’s nothing I can do about it?

Sorry I was typing

Well, I'm going to take a real stab in the dark, given that we have no info and say, well, as an employer, unpaid leave is just that, you don't have to pay it. Grin

MycatiscalkedElvis · 07/09/2018 19:44

I’m new to this so typed the title and then the long post sorry

OP posts:
HollaHolla · 07/09/2018 19:45

Did you not discuss timings before he booked it?
In my experience, it’s really hard to get unpaid leave approved from schools.

Nicknacky · 07/09/2018 19:46

Why did he book it for when you are working? I don’t think it’s unreaso for them to say no tbh. You would be off a short time later.

MorningsEleven · 07/09/2018 19:48

Oh come on! Seriously?

booandbumpp · 07/09/2018 19:50

Why did he book it when you're working if you're a teacher? Why didn't he just check the term dates!

gamerwidow · 07/09/2018 19:54

Sorry you’ve had such a awful time but you’ve worked in a school for 10 years and you know that term time holidays are not allowed. What possessed you to book it in term time?

MycatiscalkedElvis · 07/09/2018 19:54

Sorry I’m new to MN and didn’t realise that I’d have to put my dilemma in the top box. Now I’ve seen the title I realise how evasive it is.

OP posts:
MycatiscalkedElvis · 07/09/2018 19:55

Yeah I agree. Thanks for your reply

OP posts:
MycatiscalkedElvis · 07/09/2018 19:56

I’m a TA and work mornings only.. Yes he should’ve bloody checked but didn’t.

OP posts:
MycatiscalkedElvis · 07/09/2018 19:57

Thank you.

OP posts:
Oddcat · 07/09/2018 19:58

I think the Head is being a bit mean especially as you've got cover while you're off .

booandbumpp · 07/09/2018 19:58

Could you contact and ask if holiday could be changed date? You might have to pay a fee.

MycatiscalkedElvis · 07/09/2018 20:00

My previous Head allowed a teacher ( I’m a TA) a week off to attend his best friends wedding in New York. If it was so ridiculous why was that allowed?

OP posts:
MudCity · 07/09/2018 20:01

Can you move the date to your scheduled holidays? I don’t know many schools who would approve leave during term time so they aren’t being unreasonable. Hope you get it sorted OP.
