To ask if this is normal (period related)

My DD had her first period a few months back and it was just light and 4 days long. Her next one came 3.5 months later and has been awful. Days 1-6 were ok, but 7 onwards have been really heavy. She’s on day 10 now and is still having to change pads between every lesson in school, and is waking up in the morning soaked and having leaked everywhere.

She’s panicking there’s something wrong. I’m too old to even remember my first few periods but do know it takes a while to regulate.

So wibu to take her to the docs on Monday if she’s still bleeding (day 13..) or would you wait another month or so and see how they pan out. Might there be more lining seeing as it’s been 3 months since her first one, or does it not work like that? I’ve tried google and nowhere can I see anything about periods lasting 10 days or more when they first start, it’s more to do with them being irregularly spaced.
Thanks.

I'd be ringing for an appointment this evening. She risks severe aneamic if this carries on and 2/3 more days could be dangerous.

There are drugs you can take to lighten them but that sounds more than just a run of the mill heavy period.

And even if she stops over the next few days she may have another just like it in 2/3 weeks if she regulates to a cycle and you need a plan of action before then

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 07/09/2018 16:51

It was normal for me in my first year of periods.

sexnotgender · 07/09/2018 16:51

Bless her that’s rubbish.

I’d be inclined to pop to the doctor on Monday as that seems very heavy.

BloodyBosch · 07/09/2018 16:58

If lessons are an hour or so then she needs to be seen before that. Call nhs advice

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 07/09/2018 17:04

I don't think that sounds normal at all, 10 days in & very heavy-I'd be seeking medical advice. Poor love, I bet she's feeling drained.

Ilovehamabeads · 07/09/2018 17:04

I feel like I’ve let her down now for taking the ‘wait and see’ option Sad
My docs is closed til Monday, I guess I’ll speak to nhs direct in the morning. Thanks for the advice.

Why not call NHS Direct now?

Satsumaeater · 07/09/2018 17:08

Happened to me. 6 months of very light periods and then all hell let loose. Normal but not acceptable, so might be worth a GP visit. You have not let her down!!!

I also had it happen that it lasted a few days and then stopped so I thought I'd finished. But then it started all over again 36 hours later and I leaked all over my sister's bed when I was staying with her!

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 07/09/2018 17:12

I'm 37 now and began my periods at 13. This has been every single month for 24 years. I'm finally being treated and having surgery next month, but go straight to your GP on Monday and get your DD all the help available.

Hot water bottles help with the cramps, as does ibuprofen. And Floradix (from Amazon) stops my iron levels dropping.

SnuggyBuggy · 07/09/2018 17:14

It will probably be fine but it's a good idea to seek a medical opinion.

beyondthesky · 07/09/2018 17:16

You haven't let her down. I always 'wait and see' too.

My DD 12 is going through the same thing. Having 6-7 ray period every two weeks at moment.

I do think it takes time to regulate but put your mind at rest by ringing 111.

Thanks
ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 07/09/2018 17:17

Call 111 now. Why on earth wait till the morning. She is bleeding very heavily. There was a woman on here a few months ago in a similar situation that turned dangerous. Call now.

BloodyBosch · 07/09/2018 19:30

Yes, please call now - it's a 24 hour line

Needahairbrush · 07/09/2018 19:56

It sounds very heavy. I wouldn’t want to put up with bleeding like that for more days.
I do recall my second period was hideous, it was several months after my first and I had diahorrea badly (at school).

minmooch · 08/09/2018 12:08

How is your dd today?

Fluffyears · 08/09/2018 13:49

I had this, periods were 60 days apart with 11 days of heavy, clotty bleeding. The pain was unbearable it used to make me writhe, sob, scream and throw up. I also begged my mum to kill me it was awful. The gp suggested I was having double periods (skipping 1 then two coming together). I’d never heard of that. Now i’m Older I have a 30ish day cycle, the cramp is bearable and they last 4 days. The first two days are extremely heavy. Take her to the gp and see if they can help.

InsuranceGirl · 08/09/2018 14:31

That was how my periods were when I was younger, first seemed normal and then from there on out they were terrible, lasted over a week, heavy and soaking through (remember I couldn't make it through an entire lesson at school and leaked onto my white coat once, thankfully a friend saw and hid it and walked me to reception so I could call my Dad who took me home), there were even times I lost the lining of my womb and massively freaked out. I was also fainting a lot and missing a lot of time off school.

We ended up going to the doctors and I was extremely anemic, almost at blood transfusion level, and they had to put me on the pill to control my periods. I remember when I started feeling more human again saying to DM how silly it was when I was on birth control when I wasn't sexually active.

It wasn't an instant fix, every 6-8 months we'd have to change what pill I was on, they did injections for a while and eventually I had the mirenal coil fitted.

I'd been told when I was about 15 they doubted I'd be able to conceive naturally because of my periods (they did a break from the pill to see if it was normal and it was still as bad). Happy to say they were wrong and in fact when me and DP started trying we fell pregnant within 2 months.
