Especially at Tescos. Can you still cook things like the mince in the slow cooker?

My husband, the avid meat eater who regularly bemoans vegetarians (much to my annoyance) has been abducted by aliens and replaced with a husband who wants to eat less meat due to the environmental impact Shock

@kikisparks the side effects of soy are well documented by many many highly respected people. I can't see anything by someone of note who says it's safe

Thought she was dead ??

lynmilne65 · 06/09/2018 20:02

Spiced spittle ? 🤢

toomanyeastereggsurghh · 06/09/2018 20:03

The only veggie sausages I like are the Cauldron ones all the others are dry or tasteless.
The veggie hot dog type sausages are pretty good though (Tesco or Sainsbury’s own brand ones)
Tofu is just disgusting. It’s the texture that bothers me, not like meat at all.
Quorn chunks are ok in a curry or stir fry and Quorn mince in chilli or bolognese/lasagne basically anything that has lots of sauce and flavour.
The Quorn crispy nuggets are also ok.
I also love halloumi as a meat alternative as it’s very chewy.

If you're a vegan why the hell would you like schnitzel ?????

PurpleDaisies · 06/09/2018 20:17

If you're a vegan why the hell would you like schnitzel ?????

Obviously a vegan version. Hmm

What’s surprising about someone who gave up meat for environmental reasons wanting to eat something with a similar texture? It isn’t that they didn’t enjoy meat.

PeonyBlooms · 06/09/2018 20:17

Because I'm vegan for ethical reasons not because I hate the taste of meat. Can't see anything wrong with enjoying a meat free schnitzel.

QueenOfCatan · 06/09/2018 20:18

Marking my place for new recommendations! Just discovered that Iceland have a new veggie range, tried the sausages tonight and they weren't great but not horrendous. Going to try the fake chicken pieces next week.

PurpleDaisies · 06/09/2018 20:19

queen look at the Iceland posh (!) curry range. Loads of really nice veggie options there.

nellieellie · 06/09/2018 20:25

Indian food is my favourite. We do a fab paneer and green bean curry in our house. Lots of dhal too and veg sides like spinach cooked with fresh garlic, ginger and chilli, bit of fresh tomato and ground coriander, cumin, pinch of asafoetida. Even rice can be perked up with brown mustard seeds, urid dhal, fresh curry leaves and grated lemon pith. I use some quorn, and tofu but generally use fresh rather than processed foods. Aubergine and chickpea Moroccan stew is another favourite. Aubergines, courgettes, and pulses are a good combination.

Deliphant · 06/09/2018 20:27

I don't like Tofu - tasteless.

Quorn chucks are good in sauces - and come frozen which means they last / are easier to manage.

Amy's kitchen veg lasagne is nice as is Aunt Bessie's meat free toad in the hole.

I really don’t like Linda Mc burgers, particularly the mozerella ones.
Agree - really horrible and fatty and disgusting.

I might look into this posh Iceland range Grin

GLASGOWGIRL82 · 06/09/2018 20:34

The Oumph kebab spiced pieces from Tesco are good in a pitta or panini with salad and sriracha mayo.

The vivera fish goujons are better than Quorn fish fingers.

Jackfruit can be used in place of pulled pork in recipes, banana blossom can be coated in batter and used in place of fish. www.veganrecipeclub.org.uk/recipes/banana-blossom-vegan-fish-n-chips

I don't like anything that looks or tastes too much like meat so I'm not keen on the new Iceland range but I've heard good things about it from other vegetarians/vegans.

kikisparks · 06/09/2018 23:03

@lexer yep unsurprisingly that guy whose page you linked to also has links to the The Weston A. Price Foundation. It’s amazing when you start to see how they are involved in nearly all the anti soy rhetoric. Of course animal agriculture is big business, they have the money to spend on this.

If you actually look into it- There is no study that has proven moderate consumption of soya foods (I.e not consuming high quantities of soy isoflavones as supplements) to be in any way dangerous to otherwise healthy individuals.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/09/2018 23:27

Quorn vegan 'fish' fingers

Cauldron tofu (it needs to be squeezed between two plates+weight) then some black bean marinade

Meat the Alternative . The best vegetarian mince for chilli and lasagne.
Tivalli is 2nd .

Quorn mince is weirdly sweet

rainbowsandsmiles · 06/09/2018 23:30

Quorn vegan fish fingers are delicious.

Jeanclaudejackety · 06/09/2018 23:42

Quorn nuggets are the one 👌

notacooldad · 07/09/2018 19:44

Quorn nuggets are the one
Especially dipped in Langham's chilli sauce!

HalloumiGus · 07/10/2018 12:11

Late to this thread but great ideas. I eat lots of Quorn - the frozen bacon and Quorn roast are good plus the sausage patties in a roll with a cheese slice and ketchup tastes like those McDonald's breakfast bap things.

I also eat lots of their snack products like cocktail sausages and picnic eggs - all good and quick.

Other foods mainly chickpea curries or falafel, lentil Bolognese or cottage pie etc. The tinned green ones are the most meaty to me.

At Christmas last year we had a Quorn roast and a frozen mushroom Wellington from Tesco plus tonnes of veg side dishes and veg gravy.
