To think this is a scam

Got a message from HMRC the other day to say I’ve paid too much tax.
Thought it could be true.
But went to claim it back and realised it’s a scam. Filled in a false name and DOB on first page to see what happens a
Look for all the personal info they ask for! Bank account and mother’s maiden name.
Nearly fell for it.

It is a scam. HMRC don't send out emails.

restingbemusedface · 05/09/2018 21:29

Yea I get a lot of these. You can tell by the email address/url of the website that they’re dodgey

ShirleyPhallus · 05/09/2018 21:29

I’ve no idea how on Earth in this day and age literally anyone could fall for this and think it’s real for a second

Look at the URL. Quite clearly a scam.

Don’t even click on the links!

SueDunome · 05/09/2018 21:30

Please report it to HMRC Phishing

Teddy1970 · 05/09/2018 21:31

Yes it's a scam, been doing the rounds for a while. HRMC would never send a text about tax rebates, I think they've officially stated this too. Glad you didn't fall for it!

Letshopeitsallok · 05/09/2018 21:32

Ohh just filled in more fake details.

Why are you continuing to click the links? You have no idea what will be downloaded by you opening anything

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 05/09/2018 21:38

“You will suffer the consequences” of not claiming money owed to you?! That’s some creative writing right there!

Letshopeitsallok · 05/09/2018 21:39

Glad I didn’t fall for it too. I’m tired and trying to catch up on a backlog of paperwork.
Not seen this one before so wasn’t expecting it to be a scam.

They would write to you. Even when you do things online with them the response is in a letter.

Eatmycheese · 05/09/2018 21:45

If a government office send you an email there shouldn’t be typos “dont” (sic )

Bimgy85 · 05/09/2018 21:47

Lol you should know no organization/corporation will ask for your bank details in a bloody email 😂

Pixie2015 · 05/09/2018 21:47

I got a very similar one as scam looking like was from the dvla !

safariboot · 05/09/2018 21:48

Yes, scam.

You shouldn't have clicked on the links. Chances are doing so lets the scammers know, and they'll then target your email address for more scams and spams.

Phishing emails can be very convincing. I got caught out some years ago, realised right after I'd input my password. Luckily I got to the real site in question to change it at once so the scammers got nothing.

But HMRC send tax refund notices by post.

PasteSandwiches · 05/09/2018 21:50

If you nearly fell for it it then (meant kindly) you need more sleep. The "you will suffer the consequences" bit was the most obvious of the approx 10 klaxons on the first page and now you've clicked on the link in the email get ready for more of the same. The criminals can tell when links have been clicked on so you may find many more of these heading your way.

LIZS · 05/09/2018 21:52

Why would you deliberately click on the links and load dodgy pages Confused

MontanaSkies · 05/09/2018 21:56

Also... It's not even addressed to you by name! There's no "Dear Ms X", no account number etc. Not that that would necessarily be legit, but come on! It's got scam written all over it from the get-go.

CinnamonBun99 · 05/09/2018 22:00

This is really obviously a scam. That URL would've done it for me!

The only scam I've ever NEARLY fallen for is one for an ESTA to travel to the states. I searched for the ESTA page myself and clicked on the first one that came up, expecting it to be the legitimate site. The URL was so similar to the original site and it was only when I was faced with an image from the FBI after I had entered my details saying 'this page has been removed' that I realised! How lucky was that! I'm super careful now...

katseyes7 · 05/09/2018 22:04

l've had three of these in two days. lt's getting silly now.

WyfOfBathe · 05/09/2018 22:07

If a government office send you an email there shouldn’t be typos “dont” (sic )

And shouldn't send you to a .ru web address!

PolkerrisBeach · 05/09/2018 22:09

Of course it's a scam.

And not a very sophisticated one.

thismeansnothing · 05/09/2018 22:10

Scam
From past experience if you have paid too much tax you don't know until HMRC send you a cheque through the post (for the grand some of about £4 mine was) 🤣

Bowerbird5 · 05/09/2018 22:17

They also do phone calls to say you haven't paid some tax or other. I asked questions & he had it so off pat I was worried and thought it might be true( he caught me when I was unwell so not functioning on all cylinders) it carried on for a bit and as I said I asked questions eventually he asked for money! I said I would go but then rang local police fraud and reported it giving them the details I had picked up they rang for four days the first day continually from the time I should have been at the shop to buy cards. I hope I helped them catch some of them as it was reported in the paper that they had caught some men months later.

Yambabe · 05/09/2018 22:22

Erm. We don't have Goods & Services Tax and Harmonised Sales Tax in the UK. When did you think you'd (over)paid some?
