to wonder why it takes so much preparation to go for a walk nowadays

There was a time that you just pulled on a pair of comfortable shoes and headed off.

But nowadays, I see people in work changing into leggings, t-shirts, special jackets, sports socks, putting timer things on their wrists, filling up water bottles etc etc. Lunchtime is half over before they're ready to set off.

It's enough to put you off the whole exercise.

AIBU to just put on trainers with whatever I happen to be wearing and not bother about all the accessories?

For a walk at lunchtime? Surely all you need is comfortable shoes?

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 05/09/2018 13:46
  1. I don't know people who do this.
  1. I'm not sure it would make any difference to my life if I did?
thecatsthecats · 05/09/2018 13:49

YABU to start a thread when you could just do what you prefer and not attempt to be smugly superior to other people.

Sorry...

Yay! Go you! You're doing walking right! Go tell them, they'll be thrilled to hear...

Lydiaatthebarre · 05/09/2018 13:55

I see the rude snippy brigade have arrived.

I notice this too OP. Going for a walk has become a complicated business!

Santaclarita · 05/09/2018 13:56

Maybe they don't want to work in sweaty clothes after their walk.

thecatsthecats · 05/09/2018 14:02

Yep, though I had to clip on my Fitbit first.

This is AIBU. If you come here without an actual dilemma to make irrational and specific judgements about things that don't affect you then we, the rude and snippy, will come out in droves.

RibbonAurora · 05/09/2018 14:07

You do you, OP and let them do them. Some people like to make more of a ritual of certain activities, if it encourages them to take exercise and works for them better than your more casual approach, where's the harm?

MsOliphant · 05/09/2018 14:13

Not really.

I go hiking and obviously need proper boots for it. And a waterproof, and a water bottle. They go into a rucksack with a snack and suncream and some other shit. Wouldn't it be a bit silly not to take those up a bloody 13 mile clifftop walk in unpredictable British weather?

Next time I'll wear my ballet pumps, topshop blazer and take a carton of Ribena and see how I get on.

Stupomax · 05/09/2018 14:16

Where I live you might want to add some bug spray.

Lydiaatthebarre · 05/09/2018 14:36

There's a thread going at the moment about annoying posters who derail lighthearted threads with their rudeness, lack of humour and general heavy dullness. This thread beautifully illustrates their point.

keyboardkate · 05/09/2018 14:48

Having a walk at lunchtime is one of the best things you can do for your well being.

I just change into a T shirt and drape work top/shirt over the back of the chair for when I return. Have a great pair of slip on memory foam cheapies from Primark that are like walking on cushions, and off I go.

It's different if you are going on a long walk or hike, then certain equipment/accessories might be required. That's fine.

But for a brisk walk in your lunchbreak, no way!

I blame marketing and showing off. As if anyone cares.

I also go hiking and see lots of people like that, although without the ribena and with a smartphone as their sole source of navigation.

I did think for a minute that I may be overdoing it with my walking clothes, shoes, rucksack, waterproofs, map and compass etc, but the hills are certainly somewhere where I'd rather be over than underprepared.

But to go for a walk in the park or around the block at lunchtime, I just manage with what I've got on to be honest.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 05/09/2018 14:55

I also think this about running. Trainers, sports bra, go.

My friend has all these gizmos and gadgets. She once made us re-run 5 miles of our run because she forgot to start Strava.

user1485342611 · 05/09/2018 16:36

Wow, don't understand all the aggro.

I was just wondering, in a casual way, why there's so much palaver around getting ready for a quick walk nowadays. I sometimes wonder, when I'm plodding around in my skirt and trainers and meeting colleagues in leggings, track suits, vest tops etc if I'm totally out of kilter.

OP posts:
Lydiaatthebarre · 05/09/2018 16:41

Yeah that was one of the advantages of walking. No changing clothes or FAFF or bother. However I am standing firm and will continue to plod around in comfy shoes and whatever I happen to be wearing.

Moominfan · 05/09/2018 16:46

I saw some fool climb Ben Nevis in crocs and a large stick a few weeks back if that makes you feel better op
