Have been to the Range yesterday - Christmas is everywhere. Decorations, cards, craft supplies.

Seriously? It still feels like summer. Just why?

The downside for me personally is that they are destroying the special feeling about the festive season.

AIBU?

Woohoo!

I lived in The Philippines for a few years. They make Christmas last for the -ber months. Amazing.

Christmas is a state of mind.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 05/09/2018 06:02

All craft shops have their crafting supplies out now. It’s because when people make cards it can take a few months to make them. I know the range put them out this early as they were asked to by customers.

I used to work in a well known craft chain store here in the uk. Our xmas stuff went out now as well. Not much left by October.

Fabiagracefawndorn · 05/09/2018 06:02

missusZee but 4th of September?
GrinI still want a bit of sunshine

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 ok, but they also have all their home decor, bubbles, etc.

As I said, the -ber months.

My driver would happily say Merry Christmas every day from September 1st onwards.

AnnieAnoniMoose · 05/09/2018 06:11

I hate it 😡. When I rule the world it will be confined to a much smaller window as by Christmas I’m over it - it takes the shine of what should be the lovey pre Christmas lights/shopping etc. But I’m TRYING to be resigned to the fact that shops in the UK start as soon as the ‘back to schook’ stuff has mostly been sold. This year I’m trying not to do what I usually do and get so pissed off about it that I refuse to buy any of it until near Christmas, then I end up posting overseas too late 😖🙄

MaisyPops · 05/09/2018 06:24

I like Christmas and can see the point in craft supplies going out early (cards can take a while to make) but I don't get why stores need a whole Christmas Zone from the 1sr September. Blow up singing Santa models etc aren't needed or wanted at this
Time.

A few Christmas lines that are useful is fine though.

I wonder whether they do it so people buy twice: once in September/October and then again in December because they've put the stuff from earlier somewhere age and forgot they'd already bought it.

Kattyy · 05/09/2018 06:26

Nope, not unreasonable. I often find that by midDecember even the beloved John Lewis ads have become vomit inducing. Never mind the constant xmas tunes. Think last year heard the first song on radio in September...Confused [santa]
As of the driver- "you are fired!"Grin

MissusGeneHunt · 05/09/2018 06:32

I get the craft stuff, but not the rest!! I bloody love Christmas, me, but not til mid to late November! (otherwise i'll be on the Gluewein from next week.... Wine)

Fatted · 05/09/2018 06:34

I don't think there's anything wrong with the shop starting to sell Christmas stuff now. Not every one wants to be having to shop with the hoards on busy December Saturdays. I honestly cannot stand being anywhere near a shop in December!

Most shops only stock things because they will sell them. So they stock this stuff in September because people are buying it in September.

It's nothing new. On 9/11 I worked in a shop and was putting out the delivery of Christmas stock we'd had when I heard about it.

Raver84 · 05/09/2018 06:37

I have to start shopping early as have 4 children and a budget to stick to so around now I start looking for toy offers and discounts on the items I want to buy as it saves money. Craft supplies need to be bought with enough time ahead for people to make. Food, cristmas clothes and decorations however I do agree with you. Anytime after halloween I'm ok with!

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 05/09/2018 06:41

Seriously. I don’t like it either. But people buy it. This early. We had to replenish is all the time. If people didn’t buy it this early I’m not sure it would be out. But I promise you it all gets sold and fairly quickly. Some stuff was out of stock and being re stocked by the beginning of Oct.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 05/09/2018 06:41

Sorry. Should have said not being re stocked as the stores had sold it all.

OpenThatTrapDoor · 05/09/2018 06:45

Some people want/need to spread the cost over several months, or for craft supplies they need some time to make the stuff.
Personally I try to do all my Christmas type shopping (except food) nice and early to avoid the crowds. I love Christmas and nothing takes the shine off it more than having to fight your way through hoards of panicked Christmas shoppers in December.

Fabiagracefawndorn · 05/09/2018 06:47

Yes, don't get me wrong too, I really like the Christmas season, but starting this early they are ruining the magic of it (for me personally).

For me it's when it's getting cold and frosty, and you feel the scent of smoke in the air.

And for now, the memories of the summer is so fresh, it's still warm outside. It's almost like summer.

I want to enjoy warm September, long walks in parks feeling the autumn coming, then pumpkins and yellow leaves..

Somehow this way Grin

Oh. And I do agree with u. I used to have to make samples for the store. I was over xmas by October.

EggMayonnaise · 05/09/2018 06:53

Once the kids are back at school it's Christmas! I love it!

What I don't love is shopping in November/December in amongst huge crowds of people.

I start shopping in September and aim to be finished by October half term.

Then I just enjoy the build up!

TittyGolightly · 05/09/2018 07:00

I vote we make xmas like the Olympics - a once every 4 years event.

daughterofanarchy · 05/09/2018 07:17

Matalan has some Christmas stuff out yesterday. I was surprised as I think it’s a bit too early but then again I also hate Christmas shopping in December so I will probably end up taking advantage
of the Christmas stuff being in early.

OrdinarySnowflake · 05/09/2018 07:18

If nobody bought it until November, they wouldn't use up space with it now.

You don't need to buy it now, obviously enough people do to make it worth their while stocking up now.

Morethanthisprovincallife · 05/09/2018 08:10

Op it's on the Christmas board where we give each other a heads up when stock is out 😁

How much is in the range.
Many peoples minds turn to Xmas right now.

But you can choose not to hang out and haunt Xmas threads and topics of you don't like it, boycott shops if you don't like it.

PolkerrisBeach · 05/09/2018 08:15

Totally agree. I volunteer in a charity shop and we had a diktat from Head Office that Christmas cards should be displayed on August 27th. Madness.

Hate Christmas. Hate the waste, the consumerism, the plastic shite and the competitiveness. All the "have I bought enough" threads and begging threads. Hate it all the more that September, October, November and the start of December are forgotten, all to be rolled up into this four month Christmas tat-fest.

Then you get the squealy, annoying types who witter on about "hot choccy" and "making memories" and "famalam". Makes you want to strangle them with their tinsel.

But voice these opinions and you're a grimch, bah humbug or a spoilsport.

It's not easy to avoid the pervasive shite-ness of Christmas as it's everywhere. I would advocate having Christmas maybe once every four years like the Olympics. Turning it into a four month annual extravaganza is just awful. urgh.

EyUpOurKid · 05/09/2018 08:20

I've already finished my Christmas Eve Box and booked father Christmas grotto visit 🎅

I pick things up as and when I see them but aim to be finished with Christmas shopping by November. Decorations I'll start buying when we move into our new house end of September and stash them away. We need a new tree so I'm very excited about getting a nice one!

ShatnersWig · 05/09/2018 08:23

Another one here who, when I am in charge, will ban Christmas advertising and decorations until 1st December. Craft shops will be exempt on the proviso that they just stock items and not advertise their whereabouts in the store with big Christmas displays.

MissSingerbrains · 05/09/2018 08:23

Saw mince pies in Asda yesterday. No joke! Shock
