AIBU to take job for less money than currently earn?

I work in a school doing a job I have grown to hate. I work full hours in term-time. I've been offered another job doing a different role in another school but it's less hours and obviously less money (about £250 a month less). I know that realistically I have to turn it down because we'd struggle without that extra money, but I dread going into my current job. AIBU to take the job with less money?

Depends on the role

Would it make you happier
Any chance of promotion
Would you be able to adjust your budget

Why not look to making money in a different way in the holidays to make it up?

Butterly · 04/09/2018 19:50

C0untDucku1a - I did wonder about that, and how easily it could be done. Or try to take an evening job to make up the money (although,
tbh, I'm usually in bed by 10pm so a pub job would be out!)

Could you do a second job in the extra hours you'd have? Does the school have breakfast or after school clubs you could do?

Or use them to shop more wisely etc. Walk everywhere to save on transport costs?

Check out how much you'd save tax wise.

How badly would you struggle? I took a big hit changing from a job I hated to one I love. And I'm forever grateful that I did!!

If it's teaching, then tutoring outside school hours or holidays pays very well.

Exam marking could help towards the difference.

That's really good to hear @Thingsdogetbetter! I've got tomorrow to think it over so need to decide if I'll be happier even with less money.

I took a severe pay cut in order to move to a place where I really wanted to work, but where I'd have more opportunities to progress. My previous job was in a small company with no career ladder, but paid reasonably well. It was really tough surviving on my lower salary, but last year I moved up to the next pay band, so am just about earning what I was before. I absolutely love my job and am so happy there, and have more job security. It was tough when I earned less, but it was worth the risk.

Don't underestimate the stress of struggling without the money.

If I were you I would be actively looking for a job where I'm earning enough to not struggle.

I assume you aren't a teacher as you'd have said so.

Are there any other benefits to the new job? Closer to home? Free lunch? Free parking?
