Death Certificate

This isn't an AIBU, sorry, but I know I'm likely to get an answer here.

I want to order a copy of one of my parent's death certificate, the other parent will not allow anyone else to see the original or talk about it etc. My parent died suddenly and I do not know the exact cause of death.

If I was to order a copy online, will anyone be told I've been sent a copy? I've found where and how to order it, I'm just paranoid the person who registered the death will be sent something telling them a copy has been ordered.

I'm in Scotland if that makes any difference.

I don't think that anyone is informed if your order a copy of a death certificate; those heir hunter companies do it all the time, they pay their money and collect/receive the paperwork.

TheMerryWidow1 · 04/09/2018 16:34

no one if informed don't worry.

BreconBeBuggered · 04/09/2018 16:34

I wouldn't have thought so. It's a public document, isn't it? If anyone's ordered a copy of death certificates where I've registered the death, I haven't been told about it.

AllyMcBeagle · 04/09/2018 16:35

I don't think they would notify anyone because of data protection (the deceased does not have data protection rights but the requester does).

There's a phone number on this website where you can order copies of death certificates in Scotland. Have you tried ringing it because assuming it's not automated they may be able to confirm?

Sorry for your loss Flowers

No, it’s a public document and no one will be told you’ve ordered a copy.

I hope it gives you the answers you’re looking for.

Thanks everyone.

I didn't actually think to call and ask. Was just going to order online but maybe I'll give them a call first.

I used to work in registration in Scotland. The person who registered the death won't be advised if anyone has ordered a copy, don't worry.

AnnieOH1 · 04/09/2018 16:42

Be wary of some of the online ordering places (looking at you ancestry!) they charge way more than just going direct to the registrar.

nc789 · 04/09/2018 16:43

ismellsnow - That's reassuring. Thank you.

I just get too paranoid and don't want to cause any family fall out. But my sibling and I need to see this.

Thank again all.

If you are worried about possible implications for your own health or that of your siblings you might be able to speak to your deceased parent's GP?

Sorry for your loss 💐
