Driving lessons

Hello - I've recently started driving lessons but I'm getting frustrated with how long it's taking (2 hours every week) Has anyone does an intensive course and could offer feedback. I only know two people who have done intensive and they both failed.

Watching with interest as I’m about to start soon. I know someone who did an intensive course and it actually put them off learning as they hated driving for that long and were put off.

The advice I have been given is do two hours a week in lessons and find someone who you can give money so they can put learner insurance on their car and practice as much as you can (and they will let you) between lessons. This is just advice though I’m sure someone that can actually drive will have better advice for you.

Def agree with practising between lessons, made a huge difference with DD

2 hours a week is about the average, the problem with condensing your learning is that one, as mentioned, you may get frustrated with driving for long periods, and two, you won't come across as many driving situations and road conditions as you would across different months.

I did two hour lessons twice a week. Passed first time.

I did a three hour lesson once a week and additional driving with dp on a weekend (although I was learning in a manual and driving his automatic but it was still road experience). I passed after three months first time.

I was a really useless nervous learner and had 2 hours a week lessons and I passed within 5 months. Stick with it you'll get there.

Disfordarkchocolate · 04/09/2018 21:17

I did 2 1.5 hour lessons each week with 2 hour lessons for the last couple of weeks. Passed first time.

I does take time. The teachers are trying to build some experience for you as well as teaching you the necessary skills to pass. I had a friend who did a really intensive course—she needed to learn to drive in a hurry for a job she had gotten—and she passed first time so they do work for some but I think it depends on your learning style and how confident you are already. I forget how the course worked for her but I’m pretty sure it was only a few weeks with several hours of driving each day.

I would recommend 2 x 1 hour lessons per week, in the area of your local test centre. Your instructor should know the driving examiner's rough routes.

2 hour lessons are too much imo.

I did an intensive course, but with an individual instructor (former London black cabbie, he was amazing) not one of these big intensive driving schools. Did five hours a day Monday to Thursday, test on Friday. Passed. Because I was in the car so long we drove all over London, rather than just around the test route in greater London where I lived at the time, he did if you can drive in London you can drive anywhere. It definitely have me confidence, but I'd think it's really dependent on the instructor and how you learn. I'm very much a head first kinesthetic learner so it suited me, if you're more reflective or theoretical it might not work for you.

I think it depends on the person Havaina. I personally would recommend it.

My dcs' driving instructor encourages people to have 2 hour lessons and gets really, really positive results and LOTS of recommendations.

It also means you can go further from home - whether that is to practice driving on a busy high street, a winding country road or a 3 lane dual carriageway with filter lane entrance (ie, to practice what is very similar to motorways) - you might not have them that near you.

I did an intensive course with 2hr lessons 3 times a week, I found it easier that way and I passed quite quickly. I found the 1 hour lessons a couple of times a week weren’t helpful as I was so nervous everytime I went out by the time I had settled to take stuff in the lesson was coming to an end.

I did mine through the learner driver centre, but that was over 15 yrs ago

The problem with an intensive course is that it won't give you as much variety of weather and road conditions. You need to learn to drive in sunshine, snow, ice, rain, hail and night time. Intensive courses don't usually give you the opportunity to experience these.
