Uni timetable arrived and it's so spread out I won't be able to work pt - has anyone worked nights as hotel receptionist?

I'm feeling a bit set back by this because I will be in five half days, whereas at the open day it seemed the timetable would be more compressed. I was hoping to work 2 full days in office job.

I'm looking at weekend and night shift part time working now (some of my half days are in afternoons) and night receptionists for a big hotel chain keep advertising.

Has anyone ever worked in this job? I understand the few hours before morning staff come on would be very busy as you're getting things ready to handover, but would it be usual to get a quiet period of a few hours in the dead of the night?

Wondering if I could get reading done for uni in a quiet period. Probably wishful thinking though!

You need to take a look at r/talesfromthefrontdesk on reddit. Its a forum for hotel employees. Mostly american, but plenty of "night audit" people post there. Obviously they tend to post their funniest or scariest stories but you could absolutely post asking for advice. Many posters / hotel workers on there are also students.

Can you swap modules?

I needed a similar timetable as I needed to work a certain amount of hours to fund myself at uni. I went to my college department and purposely chose modules that would purposely slot into the three days that I wanted to be in uni.

Thankfully I was just as interested in the other possible modules. I wouldn't recommend this if you feel very passionately about the elective modules you've chosen. Timetables change every year after all.

Have a look at this agency, see if they can offer you any flexible jobs.

I'd be worried about safety in a Hotel. My aunt does night-shift 8pm-6am as carer at a Home. In a year she's been needed by a resident once. Otherwise she reads or watches films.

@NinetySixer I certainly didn’t mean to be condescending I just have had my fill of women being told they shouldn’t do something because men can’t control themselves. I experienced aggressive males, but we had security and night porters and cameras etc. So on the rare occasion it happened I didn’t allow it to affect me.

@Move2WY

I understand your feelings. I am anything but a man hater and believe that there are awful men and awful women in this world. However, if a women attacked me I could hold my own. If a man attacked me then I would be less able to. I think all women should be able to make an informed decision to keep herself best protected.

FWIW I wouldn’t want my BF working as a night receptionist without security either

I would look to see what nights you would be working. You wouldn’t want to be in a lecture, have to work in the night, then in lectures the following morning. Zzzzzzzzzz
