Parking one - am I in the wrong?

DDs weekly music lesson. Location at the end of a no exit street, no parking restrictions. Usually a couple of spare spaces around.

One space is fairly short between driveways, but I can fit my car against the kerb without overhanging at all. This is where I am currently as it’s the only space free right now.

Parked, sitting in the car waiting for DD to finish. People from one of the driveway houses just pulled up next to me and had a go at me as ‘I’m not allowed to park there, and the no other spaces is not their problem’

I wasn’t over their driveway, but I was close. I’d say a foot either side. There are no other road markings.

Was I parked like a dick, or where they unreasonably rude?

If you didn't overhang you're more than fine.

3girlmama · 04/09/2018 08:05

If no parking restrictions then you're perfectly ok to be there
No double lines, no signs, nothing like that's? Then fine x

GoodNewsTwo · 04/09/2018 08:06

Is there a car parked on the other side of the drive? I can see how having a car parked a foot away either side could make it hard for them to swing round in to their drive. Depends on how wide the road is, how wide their drive is, etc etc. We can't really know without seeing it...

LakieLady · 04/09/2018 08:10

If the road was wide enough for them to get their car past yours and turn to point the right way (ie at least half the length of their car between the offside of yours and anything on the other side of the road), then you weren't being inconsiderate.

It certainly wasn't illegal if you weren't blocking the dropped kerb.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 04/09/2018 08:11

I don't think you did anything wrong but could the person get on their drive with you parked there? If other people are always parking near their drive because of the music centre they are probably just a bit frustrated.

I have a drive that I need the full length of the road to reverse onto my drive, if someone has parked near to the drive it means I can't get in or out and sometimes it has caused problems especially when I'm blocked in.

Cronesquerness · 04/09/2018 08:15

There's not a problem as you're in the car and can move it if and when needed. Completely different to parking your car and leaving it to possibly cause a [partial] obstruction or any stress for anyone else as residents can see that you are inside the vehicle and able to drive.

GinSolvesEverything · 04/09/2018 08:24

Wide street. Their driveway is at the end so no cars parked on the other side, but there isn’t more road either - hard to explain!

Definitely room for them to get out, as they drove out whilst I was there.

I think they were dicks and I was fine!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 04/09/2018 08:26

Did you ask them why they thought that?

ChangerChangerson · 04/09/2018 08:28

You're not in the wrong. I suspect they just don't like people who don't live there parking outside their home or in their road as I used to get similar when I worked somewhere which didn't have staff parking so I had to park in residential roads.

GoodNewsTwo · 04/09/2018 08:30

In that case gin you were absolutely fine. As another poster pointed out you were in your car and no doubt would have moved if they couldn't get in their drive.

GinSolvesEverything · 04/09/2018 08:31

I tried! Was taken a bit off guard though as I wasn’t expecting their tirade. They just yelled at me a bit more and then drove off in a huff. Had zero interest in my reasoning.

IWNBU. They were dicks. Gavel!

Look, you are clearly in the wrong for not providing a diagram! You should know the rules by Now!!!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 04/09/2018 08:37

I don't understand why they were so cross. Either he is a complete dickhead or the road wasn't as wide as you thought or you were too near his drive.

Obviously you don't think you were wrong so I'm confused to why you even asked if ywbu!

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 04/09/2018 08:39

Looks like you've found you parking space of choice for the next few weeks

AgathaF · 04/09/2018 08:43

In the wrong and a dickhead, but it must get really bloody annoying to have people parked outside their house very frequently whilst waiting for children to have a lesson.

wink1970 · 04/09/2018 08:43

It's more likely that they get blocked at least once a day by other people, and you just got the brunt of their anger, OP.

TwoOddSocks · 04/09/2018 08:46

I haye it when people park right up to my drive especially in big cars I can't see past. I would never have a go at them for parking perfectly legally though! YANBU!

keefthebeef · 04/09/2018 08:46

I visit people for work and a lot of people think they own the street. I always smile and very softly say ‘oh gosh, I am terribly sorry I didn’t realise this is a permit holder area. I will discuss it with the council, what is your name? Is this your house?’ And they almost always just snarl and drive off in a rage then leave me alone in future. If they do approach me again I say ‘I discussed it with parking services at the council and they advised me I was fine to park here, you should ring them to discuss it’ and then don’t speak to them again. Once a man became very aggressive so I videoed him and told him if he spoke to me again it would be sent to the police. People can be territorial and aggressive, it’s pathetic.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 04/09/2018 09:05

The only thing I can think of is perhaps parking there limits visibility.
Even if that is the case, and I'm clutching at straws, it still isn't a reason for a tirade of abuse.

GandalfsWrinklyHat · 04/09/2018 09:08

I would just say I pay my road tax the same as them and can park where I want as long as its legal. Thats its.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 04/09/2018 09:12

He shouldn't have been abusive but I guess there's been issues frequently with people parking too close to his drive or even over it and the OP got the brunt of his anger.

I've never snapped at anyone that has parked too close to my drive meaning I can't get in or out but I have explained to a few people that they have blocked me in and that I needed to go out soon. They weren't impressed but did move which I thanked them for.

SoupDragon · 04/09/2018 09:18

can park where I want as long as its legal.

Thing is, you can park within the letter of the law and still be inconsiderate.

SocksRock · 04/09/2018 09:42

I have a very narrow driveway, and people often park in large vans right up to it. I would never ever have a go, as they are legally parked. To get in and out I need the full width of the road to be able to swing out past them so often I just have to pull across and make people wait while I manoeuvre. It's just what happens when you have cars on the road!

HappydaysArehere · 04/09/2018 09:47

If only everyone was as considerate as you. We are plagued by people who park right across our driveway even tho there is plenty of room outside the adjacent houses.
