To ask if you know anything about healing stones?

I’ve suffered with anxiety and depression for most of my life which has been exacerbated recently by a bereavement. I’m not fond of antidepressants, so was looking into a more natural way of healing, which leads me to my question. Does anyone on here know anything about the healing properties of gemstones or precious stones? I’ve read a bit about it online and I’m interested to see if it helps me at all but I don’t know where to start. Is there a book I could read or a beginners guide on something like this?

As a scientist I can tell you that no stone has any healing properties. Ever.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 04/09/2018 04:40

It's a load of horseshit and anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to take advantage of you.

araiwa · 04/09/2018 06:01

No such thing

Twotailed · 04/09/2018 06:05

There isn’t any scientific merit in it but psychosomatically it might help you. They absolutely will not replace real medicine though.

Have you considered / tried talking therapy? That has always been the solution to my depression.

abbsisspartacus · 04/09/2018 06:08

You can get worry stones on eBay they are thumb shaped and feel comforting

genivert · 04/09/2018 06:38

psychosomatically you may gain comfort.

But there's no such thing as a healing stone (step back and ponder how nuts that is). What is a more "natural" way of healing? You could eat a load of poisonous lead and that would be consuming a "natural" element... It wouldn't mean it's a good idea or heal you. Natural does not equate to better.

My yoga studio has a class called healing yoga. Maybe you could look into something like that where you live.

I studied geology at university but there was no module on the healing properties of gem stones. They are pretty though so if having nice jewelry that you associate with a particular good mood might help then go for it! But please, know that there is nothing intrinsically 'healing' about sparkly rocks. Exercise, fresh air, music and maybe even so different medication all might help though (speaking from experience).

JumblieGirl · 04/09/2018 07:05

I don’t believe in the woo aspect of healing stones, but one of my children and several friends do, and it seems to help them. More about the faith and less about the chemical composition.
There are numerous books and websites, and Pinterest has a lot of info. go and explore and see if anything calls to you. Handling the real thing seems to be the most effective way of choosing.
Who knows, along with medication, counselling, diet, being outside in a natural environment and exercise, having stones to hold and believe in might help.

BertrandRussell · 04/09/2018 07:22

If you find a stone-or anything else- that you like the feeling of, and which helps you feel more grounded if you hold it, then you may get some comfort and relief from carrying it with you. My dd has a stone with a hole in it from our local beach that she holds when she feels anxious. It helps her a lot- but it has no intrinsic healing properties.

Don’t reject the idea of anti depressants, they can be life changing,

noego · 04/09/2018 07:33

You could try mala beads and chant as part of a meditation. This will help calm you. There are you tube videos of how to use mala beads properly. If you have a Buddhist, Zen or Taoist centre near you, call in and enquire about joining in meditation classes.

CandidaAlbicans · 04/09/2018 13:21

The concept of healing stones is BS, but if you believe they will work then the placebo affect may cause you to feel better. One thing that has been medically proven to help though is to get outdoors and exercise. All the better if it's somewhere like a beautiful green space you can walk in.

gendercritter · 04/09/2018 13:24

I would look at having Reiki. There is nothing in it but lying still for 30 mins with another person attending to you/taking care of you is very calming. I think simply because of the placebo effect it would help your anxiety.

SaucyJack · 04/09/2018 13:30

There’s nothing in a stone that can heal you, but they may work for you as a visual prompt for mindfulness.

It won’t hurt anyway.

JumblieGirl · 04/09/2018 14:33

To be fair, they will work as well as a crucifix or rosary beads did for my granny. Lots of people have faith in unscientific, unproven things.

Alpacanorange · 04/09/2018 14:35

It’s faith and the placebo effect that gives comfort. No stone exists with healing properties.

UpstartCrow · 04/09/2018 14:35

I could be flippant and say 'they work like a charm'.

If you needed insulin, surely you'd take it? Its the same with any other medication including pain killers, or anti depressants. Take them when you need them.

Hefzi · 04/09/2018 14:47

In all honesty, I have previously been desperate enough to try this - whilst also taking vast quantities of ADs as well - because nothing was working. Very gently, the stones didn't work either, I'm afraid. I had lepidolite, iolite, rhodocrosite, rose quartz, sodalite etc etc I followed the layouts and processes recommended. It honestly made no impact whatsoever, except I tended to clink slightly whenever I moved, owing to the number I carried about my person. I was really open to stones helping - I can dowse, and am open to the possibility that things other than those we can explain can have a real impact on us.

I think they're lovely to have about, and I love the way you are "drawn" to a particular stone at a certain time. I can see they could be helpful for meditation (which I am hopeless at) - but they genuinely offered me only the hope of transformation and healing. Your situation might be different, of course, and you might respond differently: but what continues to save my life is the right combination of ADs.
