To think Prague may be full of stag dos in half term

Thinking of taking a few days with the family in October half term.Went there in early 90s before it developed stag do rep.Is it really full of stags and hens these days?

I’ve been twice. Once in October and once in early November and both times it was pretty quiet. Some family members went on my recommendation and hated it because it was so busy and had a totally different experience to us. It’s one of my favourite places in the world and it’s stunning in autumn!

Keel · 03/09/2018 19:54

We went just after Christmas. Boxing Day until day before NYE and it was lovely. Didn't see any stags or hens at all. It was very cold but beautiful. Have fun

kaytee87 · 03/09/2018 19:56

Probably not. Most people have their weddings between April and September so stags / hens will start around April I think.

Obviously there might be some but I doubt it's a busy month.

kaytee87 · 03/09/2018 19:57

Oh and they probably would avoid school holidays due to cost.

Penfold007 · 03/09/2018 19:57

Taken to DC to Prague a couple of times. Found that avoiding being there on a Saturday night made the trip less expensive and skipped the stag/hen dos.
Tuesday/Wednesday to Friday and even Saturday morning worked out really well.

Littlefish · 03/09/2018 19:57

We went in the Easter holidays. The flight over was awful - loud, drunk, sweary men going on stag do's, meant that I was dreading the weekend. However, once we got there, we didn't see any of the same behaviour at all, other than the occasional beer cycling truck thing.

I absolutely loved Prague!

dingdongdigeridoo · 03/09/2018 19:57

Been a couple of times in the last few years and have never seen any stag or hen parties. There are certainly clubs and bars etc, but no more than any other European city.

You’ll love it. It’s a beautiful city, especially in the autumn and winter.

Notquiteagandt · 03/09/2018 20:07

I went end january begining february last year. Didnt see single stag or hen party.

Lots of chinese tourists though due to lunar new year randomly.

Would imagine most stags/hens be spring time. For summer weddings.

TheActualFuck · 03/09/2018 21:11

DH and the "lads" are going in half term. All 17 of them Hmm not sure how many other big groups go like they do though.

Rhumba · 03/09/2018 21:20

I'm going at half term and hadn't even thought about Stag dos! Any good ideas what to do/ where to eat etc

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 03/09/2018 21:27

I went just a few weeks ago with a friend and didn’t see any stag or hen parties. Not like 14 years ago when the place seemed awash with beery men in tutus. The town was pretty lively late on Friday and Saturday night, but old gimmers that we are, we were heading back to the hotel by then.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 03/09/2018 21:34

Eats and drinks: we enjoyed Ů Pinkasů, Ů Medvídků, and Ů tři zlatých lvu. Also fun: Ů Fleku (but you have to like dark beer as it’s all they serve) and the Fat Cat on Jílska. Great dům trying lots of different Czech beers at the Beer Museum. It was a pretty beer focused trip - sorry if that’s not your thing! 🍻

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 03/09/2018 21:34

Great fun sorry

keyboardkate · 03/09/2018 21:35

I'd say Hens and Stags are a weekend thing generally. So if you go Sunday evening to Friday morning, (pick your days) you'll be ok.

Same applies to most H+S venues around Europe I'd say.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 03/09/2018 21:36

Ive been numerous times and never seen any stag parties. They tend to frequent the red light areas at night and probably sleep most of the day. Prague is an amazing city.

everygalaxy · 03/09/2018 21:37

There was a beer spa near our air b & b!

Flight out was full of stags but only saw a few around when we went in August. Really loved the city.

Earslaps · 03/09/2018 21:40

I lived in Prague for a while and didn't come across too many stag/hen parties. I would see lots of them on the plane over and a few groups sightseeing in the day, but they never went to the same bars/restaurants as us.

I think a lot of groups use organised tours, so they do activities during the day and then go to bars/pubs/clubs with other stag/hen groups.

RedPandaFluff · 03/09/2018 21:44

I'm in Prague right now (for the 3rd time this year) and have been here since Sunday; it's fine. A few stag dos when we visited for a long weekend in May but nothing rowdy. It's a very pretty city.

maxthemartian · 03/09/2018 21:44

Littlefish same experience on the flight but they seemed to disappear into the city once there.
They weren't so bloody loud on the return flight! One lad, the groom to be, was sat with his head in his hands in the Departure lounge, chalk white and looking utterly traumatised. God only knows what he'd got up to.

Junkmail · 03/09/2018 21:48

I went in October and it was perfect. Still lots going on but few crowds. My husband and I had a great time. We found it to be a really friendly and relaxed city. And we didn’t see any stag parties at all.

Taylor22 · 03/09/2018 21:58

My husband just returned from Prague on a stag Do.

He said it was full of Stags.

xmasadsboohiss · 03/09/2018 22:15

Wow! Thanks for all the replies. We're thinking of going Sunday to Thursday. Overall sounds like we might be ok stag do wise then. Where's a good area to stay? I'm guessing the Old Town gets busy and noisy at night? Is around the castle quieter? Or the newer parts? Is it all quite walkable? Can't remember too much of it from twenty five years ago - other than it being a kind of a magical place.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 03/09/2018 22:22

Just back last night. Lots of stags and hens on the flights, but didn’t see them in Prague itself. Would recommend the Unitas hotel which is near everything - we walked everywhere from there. Gorgeous city.

MoltenLight · 04/09/2018 11:19

Wenceslas square and around the Namesti Republiky area tend to be busier at night.

Old town is busy but in a nice way. It’s more restaurants and pubs rather than bars. There are often performers in the square at night which are fun to watch. Definitely go up the clock tower at night if you were planning on doing that, it’s much prettier.

We had 0 problems anywhere but W. Square felt seedier. That’s where all the casinos etc are. I probably wouldn’t take kids there at night, purely because there’s nothing for them.

There isnt much around the castle, it’s up on a hill and is quieter. If you’re on the castle side you’re closer to the Lennon Wall if that interests you, and you can get into town by crossing Charles Bridge each day.

The metro is great so anywhere you stay, you’ll be able to get everywhere. I highly recommend Petrin Park. There’s a miniature museum nearby that’s really cool, and the walk up Petrin Hill is beautiful. There’s a furnicular if you don’t fancy walking, but it wasnt working either of the times we went. There’s a mirror maze, an observatory and a viewing tower up there and great views of the city.

Check out the zoo. It's amazing after all the refurbs.
Public transport in Prague is great so if you are bit off centre, it's still not an issue.
Stag dos tend to be in certain areas, they don't usually go for the history...
Golden alley in Prague castle is lovely.
Depending on the date, you might want to take a trip ourside of Prague for a day to Karlstejn castle. Lovely ride by train and lovely castle. (Never been conquered) www.hrad-karlstejn.cz/en

Don't eat in main tourist areas on big squares. It's often unnecessarily expensive. We went to Krcma in Old Town. It's styled into medieval era and the food was great (few years ago).
I honestly hated the Beer museum in city centre. Absolutely hated it. Haven't even had a chance to have a drink. Staff behaviour was abysmal. So we moved to elsewhere.
