My Mum fell, approx 5 weeks ago, onto her outstretched arms landing onto concrete. She went to A&E - which she never does - as she was in so much pain. She was told after a lengthy wait and x-ray that she had sprained her elbow. Given a fabric sling, told to wear it but also use her arm.

She was still in pain 2 weeks later without any let up in severity - also lacking use in the arm too. She saw her GP who said she didnt need another x-ray and prescribed pain relief.

She went back to the Doctors last week, explaining there hadn't really been any let up in the pain and the nurse practitioner agreed her arm was swollen and sent her for an x-ray.

She had this on Friday. I went with her. The radiologist made her wait afterwards to review the x-ray as it was an injury related x-ray. The lady said "Nothing jumps out at us so you're good to go. We'll write a report for your GP and it'll be available in a week"

She got a call Friday afternoon from her GP surgery - there was an "abnormality" on the x-ray and she would need to see the GP. Was told there were no appointments until a week on Friday.

She called this morning on the off chance there was a cancellation - saw the GP at 9.30 and was told "Oh yes, your elbow is broken - take this to A&E" She duly did this, saw triage, a doctor, given a different sling and told the fracture clinic will write to her.

I just feel that perhaps the latter part - the second x-ray, being told all was ok, lack of appointments when told there was an "abornamilty" by the receptionist but not explaining further then no appointments for another 8 days.... It just seems really pants.

And I know the NHS is stretched and all of that. It just feels like my poor Mum has been in pain for weeks when it could have been resolved ages ago :(

Yeah I don't think that's on to be honest.

monkeysox · 03/09/2018 16:49

That's ridiculous

Merryoldgoat · 03/09/2018 17:07

That’s absolutely disgraceful. Yes, of course you should make a complaint. Your poor mother 😔

Cardiganandcuppa · 03/09/2018 17:09

Thats really shit!
Yes, I would complain.

MissusGeneHunt · 03/09/2018 17:09

Pretty appalling I think. I will sing praise to the rooftops about the NHS in many cases, but this isn't one of them. Disjointed managerial bureaucracy is mainly to blame. Your poor mum. Hope she's better soon.

Thanks all. My kneejerk reaction often is to get cross about things that wouldn't phase others so I wanted to see if IWBU to insist my Mum makes a complaint. The Xray she had on Friday, that shows the break, is also showing signs of healing so the concern now is whether it has healed correctly. My Mum said she thought the nurse practitioner she saw at A&E would have to point out the break to her but she could clearly see it for herself :(

I had similar. Pain of broken elbow was like nothing else. I clearly saw the fracture on the X-ray that the dr was looking at. Was told it was just nerve damage.
Gp sent me back after 3 weeks and a lot of painkillers because she wasn’t satisfied that it wasn’t broken. Funny enough, the next X-ray was even clearer, dr said oh no, that’s nothing to worry about, that won’t be causing all your pain - then had me describe who I’d seen last.

Eventually got them to admit that it was broken and was told ‘well, you’re doing what you would for a break anyway, so never mind!’ 😡

Yes definitely complain. If it were me I would call the fracture clinic and explain the situation. They can see people at short notice for emergencies and this seems like something which needs seeing sooner rather than later. I got seen the day after going to A&E and I wasn't especially in pain. Don't wait for the clinic to write to you, mine never bothered for my follow up post op and I had to call them a month after surgery, turns out I should have been seen asap.
