Do I really have to iron the school shirts?

DS is going to secondary school so it's proper shirts, ones that appear to need ironing.

I've just ironed 4 of them and I hate it. There must be another way?

I'm crap at it, I don't like doing it, and it makes me really hot.

Is there a magic spray or a trick that means I never have to see the iron again?

There are definitely clothes of ours that need ironing no matter how much I've shaken or put on a hanger to dry. I couldn't wear them myself or send DH or the DC out in them because they would look ridiculous.

If you want your kids to look like scruffy mingers whose parents dont give a shit then send them in non ironed shirts worn multiple times.
Teachers must notice those kids.
For the time it takes why wouldnt you? I want mine to look clean and smart, not dragged up. And yes to teenagers doing their own but pride on what you wear is a life skill which should be taughr imo. You wouldnt get away with that in the workplace, or get a job wearing a creased shirt for interview.
Dont be so lazy.

There’s a difference between doesn’t need ironing and “looks like shit but I don’t care”.
I don’t iron. My kids don’t look like scruffy urchins because I hang the clothes properly to make sure most of the creases fall out / tumble dry to smooth out creases.
It’s not neglect, it’s deciding that a mindlessly boring, futile, time consuming job can be consigned to the bin because it’s NOT NECESSARY.
In my very humble opinion, of course Grin

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 05/09/2018 09:43

Where ironing is concerned I will hold my hands up and say I AM lazy. I hate it. I don't iron everything in fact I iron the clothes that I would feel embarrassed wearing out of the home because they are creased. I do all the shaking and hanging up palavar but some items DO need it.

angieloumc · 05/09/2018 09:45

I run a quick iron over M&S ultimate non-iron for my DD, do put them in the dryer first but they're still slightly crumpled.
Mine have always had a fresh shirt (before that polo) every day. I just thank the lord that my three grown up DS's are no longer in need of me ironing for them and I've only got the one to do for now. Though I will iron work shirts for the 20 yr old when he's home from uni.

onetimeposter · 05/09/2018 09:48

Not ironing on here smacks of middle class eccentric business. From a shitty high rise flat background a kid would be judged.
Ironed shirts look so much better than non ironed, I don't get why for the 30 mins it would take, tops, you wouldn't do it.
Or are you so busy doing important middle class things like feeding your goat and making your chicken stretch a fortnight with lentils?

Thanks for the personal attack but I'd rather spend the time making my kids look clean thanks hun x Smile

DontCallMeBaby · 05/09/2018 09:54

This is what is visible if DD’s school shirt today. I’m entirely on board with her decision not to iron, even if it is only freeing up more time to watching the entire run of Friends on Netflix for the second time

Do I really have to iron the school shirts?

You can hardly start complaining about personal attacks after your comment!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 05/09/2018 09:58

You're obviously not bothered if she takes her blazer off and people judge you because your DD has a creased blouse on Dontcallnebaby? Because there who the teachers or friends will judge not her 🤷‍♀️

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 05/09/2018 09:58

That not there

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 05/09/2018 10:00

By the time the blazer comes off their body heat has done the same thing a steam iron would have done.

Grin mine wasn't personal-it was addressed at all the ironophobes

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 05/09/2018 10:04

One of mine got a mention in dispatches for always being immaculately turned out Grin
Unless school were being sarcastic? (Hadn’t considers that possibility, actually...)

MrsChollySawcutt · 05/09/2018 10:10

I do iron school shirts. I like the DC to look and feel smart and well turned out and due to skin issues I buy the high cotton content shirts from John Lewis which definitely do need ironing. I do agree though that if you buy the non-iron school shirts you can get away without it.

What I don't understand is how some can claim not to iron anything at all ever. I don't iron everything but there are many clothes (DH shirts, my work dresses and suits) and the bed linen that just couldn't wear without ironing. They would look creased and wrinkled, Are non ironers wearing a lot of polyester?

TwoOddSocks · 05/09/2018 10:12

Not personal but goody as can be! I don't think you can call people's kids mingers with shit parents and act fronted when you get a few insults hurled your way now can you? Grin

TwoOddSocks · 05/09/2018 10:15

MrsChollySawcutt

WE don't iron anything at all on a regular basis. DH works in an office where no one where's a suit into work - he has non-iron shirts anyway. I work from home so can be slouchy. I've never ever ironed bed lined and would never consider it.

I do very occasionally get out a dress that needs ironing or DH's nice wedding shirt but that's very rare.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 05/09/2018 10:17

Do you ever travel for work, MrsCholly? Hanging clothes in a steamy bathroom while you shower works wonders.
No need for (crimplene) polyester at all.

Grobagsforever · 05/09/2018 10:22

Ironing is a waste of life. No one in their right mind irons. Also it's bad for the environment.

onetimeposter · 05/09/2018 10:31

Eh? More than a tumble dryer or heated airer? Confused

No probably not Grin but the kids will be scruffy, and it will be noticed by the schools.
I wonder how people feel when seeing a nurse, would they be more confident if one had a white ironed uniform or a grey one which had clearly not been ironed? Or a lawyer/doctor in a creased shirt? No pride in your appearance, no pride in your work,

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 05/09/2018 10:55

DH would wear clothes that have been hung up and shaken without ironing at the weekend if he was staying in or pottering about as long as they weren't really creased.

However he wouldn't dream of going into the office with a non ironed shirt on. He does his own ironing mostly and doesn't see it as a waste of his precious time.

MrsChollySawcutt · 05/09/2018 10:58

Same here Greatduck. DH does fair shares of the ironing and definitely wouldn't go into the office in an un-ironed shirt or sleep on crumpled sheets either.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 05/09/2018 10:59

A pound to a penny nobody notices, duck.
