hi all,

am considering whether to let my 2 kids go trick or treating (with adult supervision) on top of their school halloween party? what is everyone else doing? and if you are doing anything, what are your kids going as?

thanks!

I can tell you what I’m not doing - thinking about Halloween nearly 2 months before the event!

sleepismysuperpower · 02/09/2018 22:42

sorry, i know it is early but i like to be organised, and the school have sent out a letter about basic info for the Halloween party.

We'll just be going trick or treating fairly earlyish, as soon as it gets dark. Then will hand out sweets to whoever knocks. We will have some snack type food for tea such as hot dogs, pizza. We include a visit to their grandparents while trick or treating too.

Magicmonster · 02/09/2018 22:44

Sorry for my flippant response 😃 my kids are still too young for trick or treating but I’m nkt sure how popular it is round here anyway - we’ve never had anyone ring the doorbell (that could be because we don’t put pumpkins out etc though)

PhilomenaButterfly · 02/09/2018 22:46

We always go trick or treating, DD's going as Bonnie from Five Nights at Freddy's, DS2 would like to go as Golden Freddy, but DD's making her costume, not sure how we'd do Golden Freddy.

Justgivemesomepeace · 02/09/2018 22:47

Yep. Will also has a snack/party type tea and go out around 5.30-6 ish. There are usually loads out round here and some houses really go to town. Everyone ignores the houses with no lights or pumpkins out. Then home to open our door to trick or treaters

sleepismysuperpower · 02/09/2018 22:50

thanks for all the replies. do any of your kids schools actually throw a halloween party? it would of course be an option for them to skip that and go trick or treating instead.

What we're doing for Halloween, we're going to WDW and doing Mickey's not so scary Halloween party, me DD and DH will be going trick or treating in magic kingdom. That's a few days before. I've ordered a dress to be specially made, she will be going as stitch who is her favorite Disney character. I will be going as Minnie mouse and DH is dressing up as anger.

We get back a few days before Halloween, so the dogs going back to dog care on Halloween, as they don't celebrate and the dog goes nuts with the door going constantly.

DD is having a film night at home with Pizzas and her friends, it's probably DDs last year trick or treating, as she is 10 but looks about 14 being 5"5, she will have a quick run around the estate before her friends come, with DH as I tend to the door.

Halloween is my favourite holiday so we plan quite far in advance!

Lots of children around here go trick or treating, it's mostly for younger children so there's usually a parent supervising. There's an unwritten rule that children look for houses with pumpkins outside and only knock on those doors so nobody is disturbed when they don't want to be. It works well though because lots of houses participate.

No Halloween party at my DC's school.

sleepismysuperpower · 03/09/2018 15:20

thanks for your reply. do your dc's school hold a halloween party? if so, would you let them go to both or just one?

OP posts:
kaytee87 · 03/09/2018 15:21

Why would you not let them do both? Confused

sleepismysuperpower · 03/09/2018 16:00

the halloween party is the night of halloween, and so i'm not sure how late it will finish. don't really want to send them to bed really late, but i'm not sure which they would enjoy more.

kaytee87 · 03/09/2018 16:43

Ah ok that makes sense. Well I'd just ask them what they'd prefer to do. Round my way people don't trick or treat after 8.30ish

LagunaBubbles · 03/09/2018 16:45

Im waiting for the inevitable Halloween is begging posts! Grin

MsHopey · 03/09/2018 17:51

I love Halloween.
Trying to do family costumes that match, DS is only 13mo atm, last year we went as pirates and went round a local park type place (not sure how to describe it) and they have huts with different characters giving out sweets and toys. There's a few rides too.
Just found out I'm pregnant again, this year were just getting skeleton print t shirts and going to west Midlands safari park Halloween evening.
I'm going to have one of the ones with the baby printed on the stomach, take a family photo and intending it to be our family reveal for baby number 2.
I want to do something every year now we've got kids!

topcat2014 · 03/09/2018 17:52

A couple of years back (at about 8 y/o) DD started thinking about her halloween plans in Feb, so you are not too early OP!

sleepismysuperpower1 · 04/09/2018 11:48

Thankyou for the replies everyone! ( i have got locked out my old account- so its the same person just new username!) i think i'm going to discuss it with DD1's best friend's parents- and see what they are planning to do. I think i will suggest skipping the party and going trick or treating instead. x

Willow2017 · 04/09/2018 12:49

When my kids were in primary we had a fabulous Halloween party every year.
All the kids roynd here go guising and we have loads of decorations out and i spend hours carving pumpkins (easier than neeps though😀)

We are all looking forward to it already.

OutPinked · 04/09/2018 12:56

I’m no doubt going to be having a ELCS shortly before or even directly on Halloween so I sadly don’t think I’ll be able to do much with them this year. Usually I make a lot of Halloween food and we watch a film. I’m not a huge fan of trick or treating for various reasons but they have asked to go this year so I may have to ask my DM if she will take them.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 04/09/2018 12:57

what will they be going as? :)

dreaming174 · 04/09/2018 13:09

Isn't this an American thing? Since when has 'trick or treating' been a thing here? Ok, we might have some family friends knock but it's planned. Knocking of strangers doors? No thanks

Willow2017 · 04/09/2018 13:20

Trick or treating was originally imported to usa from Uk when people emigrated looking for the promised land.
T or t was Americanized from Samhain/guising/mischief night which are very old traditions here.

Trick or treating has become more popular in uk for years but in Scotland (at least where i live) its guising. Everyone has to do a party piece -sing, tell jokes, poem etc for thier sweets. Its a fab night for everyone.

GladAllOver · 04/09/2018 13:21

I think of Halloween the day before. When I print a 'No trick or treat thanks' note to put on the door.
