To clean our hotel apartment

Raven88 · 02/09/2018 22:33

Me and DH are currently on holiday in Cyprus and I can't help cleaning our hotel room. I bought basic cleaning products to clean as I go. I don't want the cleaners to walk into a state every day. DH thinks I am weird for doing it. Is it not normal to clean where you are staying?

Tidy yes, clean no.

thecatsthecats · 02/09/2018 22:34

Of course it isn't, but I suspect you know that already...

Bimgy85 · 02/09/2018 22:35

Yes it's pretty normal to clean as you go... regardless whether you're home or in a rental or hotel Hmm

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 02/09/2018 22:38

Is it not normal to clean where you are staying?

Not in a hotel that is cleaned daily, no.

Why would it be 'a state' if you weren't cleaning it daily? How much filth can you possibly deposit throughout a hotel room during normal usage over the course of 24 hours, assuming that you're out a lot of the day anyway?

BarbaraofSevillle · 02/09/2018 22:39

No. Why would you? You're on holiday and if there are cleaners coming in, it's their job to clean. Are you one of those people who complain that it 'wasn't a holiday for you' because you did loads of cleaning that didn't need doing anyway?

What needs cleaning? Obviously if it's self catering, you do the washing up and clean any spills, but otherwise, no.

We don't even tidy up really. We spend most time out and about or on the balcony so stuff just gets dumped all over the place in the apartment. It'll get tidied away when we pack to go home.

Raven88 · 02/09/2018 22:46

I'm just wiping the surfaces and doing the kitchen after I used it. Also putting things away. It doesn't get cleaned daily it's cleaned 5 days a week.

@BarbaraofSevillle I'm not spending a lot of time cleaning and I'm not someone who would say it's wasn't a holiday for me. I enjoy cleaning up before I go to bed.

Ummm it's pretty normal to clean up after yourself wherever you are

LaurieMarlow · 02/09/2018 22:53

It's not normal to clean a hotel room as you go (provided you adhere to basic levels of hygiene).

But as this place has a kitchen, it's not a regular hotel room. What is it? Do the cleaners clean every morning?

MissCharleyP · 02/09/2018 22:54

Good grief no! There are cleaners already, why are you doing it? My ex was like this; borrowed his friends apartment for a week in Spain, paid his mate to pick up and drop off at airport and clean apartment after we’d gone home, he (ex) was going mad the morning we were leaving as ‘I hadn’t done anything’, why would I? I’d already paid someone else to do it.

OwlinaTree · 02/09/2018 22:55

I like to have a tidy round in a hotel room to make sure the clothes aren't all getting mixed up etc. I don't clean though

Bimgy85 · 02/09/2018 22:59

But I don't get it, surely some people it's just in their nature to automatically clean after themselves in everything they do? So no one can say whether it's normal or not

halcyondays · 02/09/2018 23:04

No, not unless something was spilt.

BackforGood · 02/09/2018 23:04

Bit confusing as you are talking about 'cleaning a hotel room' but also mentioning 'a kitchen' (not normal in a hotel room) and 'cleaners not coming for 5 days'.

If I were self catering, I would wipe surfaces as I went along, but if I were paying for a hotel, then no, I certainly wouldn't expect to be cleaning and definitely wouldn't be out buying cleaning products.

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 02/09/2018 23:06

So no one can say whether it's normal or not

Well, given that the OP specifically asked "Is it not normal to clean where you are staying?" it appears that she does want people to cast their vote in terms of normal/not normal.

I've never been to Cyprus, but if cleaning your hotel room then running a poll on it on social media is as exciting as it gets, I'll give it a miss Grin

Raven88 · 02/09/2018 23:09

We are staying in a small studio apartment within a hotel. The cleaners come in some days usually after lunch. It appears I am in the minority with this one.

Bluelonerose · 02/09/2018 23:13

Sorry op I think it's weird I come on holiday not to lift a finger.

I normally pick everything up off the floors and beds and dump it on the side so the cleaners can come and clean but anything else no way.

User5trillion · 02/09/2018 23:13

My parents, well smum does this. They are convinced that they have caught bugs from places not being clean enough. Their house is pretty much sterile so they have no natural immunity Grin . She cleans all surfaces and everything you touch, so door handles, switches etc. Takes 20 mins or so. Its a bit mad but having worked in a hotel, they have a point!!!

Raven88 · 02/09/2018 23:22

We've all got our foibles!

arethereanyleftatall · 02/09/2018 23:34

I'm really surprised at the number of people saying they clean a hotel room.
I thought the op would get a unanimous 'don't be silly.'

User12879923378 · 02/09/2018 23:41

Hotel room: I would keep my things tidy, and I would fold my clothes and leave them somewhere that meant the cleaners didn't have to disturb them. I would mop up any small spills and would do what I could with bigger ones before informing the desk/apologising. I wouldn't buy my own cleaning products.

Self catered/kitchen sharing thing: I would wipe down the surfaces and mop up in the same way as I would if I was at home. I would usually also load the dishwasher/wash up at the end of the stay. I probably wouldn't hoover or do massive dusting or cleaning or strip the beds unless it was specifically a term of the let.

TroubledLichen · 02/09/2018 23:44

Really weird thing to do if you have daily cleaning. Call reception/housekeeping and complain if it’s not up to standard. And loosen up a bit and enjoy your holiday!
