To wind up MLM recruiters

There used to be an MLM thread here SOMEWHERE. I have finally seen it, just when I thought everyone had become immune to their ways, someone on my Facebook has officially turned into a hun, despite my best efforts of 'are you sure you want to do this, everyone looses money, it's all lies...' with obviously no prevail. The head hun has told her she earns over 3K a month and she'll be doing the same! With a load of other bullshit. Over £200 to start up!! No no no. I'm angry because certain women are being targeted, are being fed lies and putting themselves into debt and being egged on by these vampires for 'making memories' which will never happen, just lining the pockets of those at the top . Can't anything be done?

Part of me wants to message the head huns as a prospective hun looking for work and see what bullshit they come out with, discredit and really how far they go with their lies. I know that's terribly childish and I won't, because at the end of the day, most of them are getting conned too. Can we petition or anything? Get more of awareness of the scams like a campaign? How do we defeat the head hun?

First time posting on AIBU hence the NC ~hides~

I would love to see what the smartarse Mumsnetters can come up with here as I am trying my best to dodge two of them!!!

Vicky1990 · 03/09/2018 05:05

What is MLM.

KittyVonCatsworth · 03/09/2018 05:15

There’s this one in money matters. They wind me up too, preying on the vulnerable 😡
MLM = multi level marketing; the pyramid scheme of today (although the hons swear it’s not)

AlmaGeddon · 03/09/2018 05:17

Multi level marketing - you make money on sales , also money from those you've recruited.

sawbucks · 03/09/2018 05:22

It's like a cult. Don't join, don't get involved. 99% don't give results and products are shit. Waiting for the mass MLM people to tell me how wrong I am, how MLM changed their life, and how great the MLM product they sell is from all others.

Vicky1990 · 03/09/2018 05:39

Almageddon.
Thanks for that, never heard of it.

ItsScoob · 03/09/2018 05:48

Why try and wind someone up for trying to be successful in their efforts?

You've got to be a real dick to think like this.

AssassinatedBeauty · 03/09/2018 05:53

"Being successful in their efforts" means being successful at pressurizing and persuading other women to sign up to their scheme and pay their fees. Many many people have an issue with how MLM schemes target people and offer the hope of earning money that will almost never be possible. These schemes are wrong and target vulnerable demographics. Absolutely nothing wrong with thinking about ways to expose that.

ItsScoob · 03/09/2018 05:57

Ah, this is a feminist issue? Hmm

What business doesn't involve some kind of pressure? Are you saying that these schemes are illegal?

AssassinatedBeauty · 03/09/2018 06:00

Ah, because only illegal things are wrong, of course.

Furrycushion · 03/09/2018 06:00

You may think you haven't heard of them, but have you ever been invited to a party in someone's home where they demonstrate cookery items, beauty item, aloe Vera, juices and then been asked if you would like to sign up? That's MLM.

WelcomeToShootingStars · 03/09/2018 06:02

It isn't that they make money from recruits.

It's that they HAVE to recruit to make money. A lot of the compensation schemes limit what can be earned without having recruits..

And they know they aren't making any money. They know the stuff they post on social media is sheer lies. So absolutely it is unethical to recruit more people into the sham on the basis of lies.

Esspee · 03/09/2018 06:02

Don't know about illegal but definitely immoral.

ItsScoob · 03/09/2018 06:03

I think that for you to try to disrupt an entirely legal business because you think it is wrong is, well, wrong. Probably legal but you must have a very high opinion of yourself to think it's your job to do so.

AssassinatedBeauty · 03/09/2018 06:04

What an odd post.

SpiritedLondon · 03/09/2018 06:10

Yes I think you can flog the product til you’re blue in the face but the only way you make money is through recruiting others - that’s the issue. Well, it’s tricky. I know some women who got sucked into a scheme and I was really surprised - I thought they were more savvy than that. I probably wouldn’t bother messing with any MLM up the chain .... it’s no doubt futile. I also wouldn’t buy any product from your friend and that would be my stance to anyone involved in a MLM.

BobbyBanana · 03/09/2018 06:12

What are you selling Scoob ?
Would love to hear about it.

FilthyforFirth · 03/09/2018 06:15

What are you selling then ItsScoob? I'm sure it's fab...

BobbyBanana · 03/09/2018 06:16

Read this, doubters. And come back and tell us how we object to MLM because of a personal character flaw.

TwoBlueShoes · 03/09/2018 06:19

Did you read that blog about Younique?

Honesty, MLMs are such an awful con and I absolutely don't condone the recruiters, but they are most likely desperate and not making money either. The real assholes are the ones at the top.

Here's the blog link, if anyone is interested.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 03/09/2018 06:25

I say treat them like Nigerian Princes. Pretend to be interested until they realize you're just leading them on for a laugh.

ABoxersMum · 03/09/2018 06:32

It seems a bit unfair. Yes I am part of a MLM scheme and yes, there are unscrupulous recruiters out there but .... I love what I do. I don’t force people to buy, I don’t force people to join. I hope that the people I do recruit get all the help they need from me and I make it clear that they are not going to earn thousands - even though, to be fair, some do. It is not something that I ever imagined myself doing but I love it. I’ve made some fantastic friends, some extra money and got fitter. Just because it’s something that you personally would not do, please do not tar us all with the same brush.

ItsScoob · 03/09/2018 06:37

What do I sell?

Education.

I once hosted a Tupperware party, if that's what you're getting at.

wheezing · 03/09/2018 06:47

I don’t see how it’s any different than engaging the cold callers about accidents and PPI for a few minutes to get them nibbling then saying goodbye.
I wouldn’t though, only if one tried to recruit me would pretend to be vaguely interested and ask for example payslips and things and go into details of how much they actually expect to make NET of all the crap you have to buy.
