To ask if anyone uses biodegradable/eco nappies?

I admit I'm posting here for traffic!

We use cloth nappies for our son but use disposables for the night. We are also TTC our second baby and will also reuse nappies for him/her as well. However, I'm looking at biodegradable/eco nappies but its a bit of a minefield. Obviously they are more expensive which is fine but don't want to waste a lot of money trying various ones out. Kit & Kin seems to have a mixed response. Other ones I'm looking into is Naty, and the Mum + You ones.

Does anyone use any of these? Thoughts? Is there any I'm missing?

Thanks :)

Be careful - when I researched a few years ago a lot of them are only biodegradable in a compost bin and will not degrade in landfill!

wheezing · 02/09/2018 21:28

I use Naty, never used anything in > 2 years. Very happy with them.

If I did it again I’d probably do cloth but I would be a bit more confident with it all now.

Putyourdamnshoeson · 02/09/2018 21:31

We used bumgenius and just used extra suffers at night.
The eco disposables are rubbish and literally, rubbish.

Putyourdamnshoeson · 02/09/2018 21:31

stuffers

BearBuilder · 02/09/2018 21:32

I tried and failed with cloth nappies so moved onto kit&kin or naty (buy whichever is on offer at the time!) both have been fine, no more leaks than 'normal' nappies and my conscience is a little lighter!

hibbledibble · 02/09/2018 21:33

Nothing biodegrades in landfill.

The 'biodegradable' nappies however have a lower carbon footprint for production.

I tried naty but found them to not be very absorbent.

Bumdishcloths · 02/09/2018 21:33

Kit and Kin are lovely but come up super small I think. I hated Naty as they're super papery and rustle. Also, nothing will biodegrade properly in landfill as it's an anaerobic environment. We cloth nappy by day but use Aldi or Pampers at night.

PragmaticWench · 02/09/2018 21:36

We use Bambo, for the less awful production processes really. Bulk buy them online.

Sandstormbrewing · 02/09/2018 21:39

We used beaming baby ones, which I got on quite well with. We only use them at night as we use reusables in the day. But they are only 60% biodegradable or something (as are most eco nappies) but better than the 1% of pampers!

Frazzled2207 · 02/09/2018 21:42

We used Naty for years with both kids and never had a problem

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 03/09/2018 00:22

Aren't the new Pampers 'eco friendly'?

I don't have a baby tho so not clued up

Runssometimes · 03/09/2018 06:39

Is it because of absorbency you use disposables at night? If so I really recommend motherease duos, you can put an extra booster in if needed. Or tots bots bamboozles. I switched to Naty when my DS was dry during the day as I was no longer doing nappy washes. I did compost them in a composter. They don’t biodegrade in landfill.

Don't have a baby yet but I'm very interested in this was well.

i did compost them in a composter.

I'm assuming you're not just talking about your standard "heap" in the backyard..?

What kind of composter did you use? Did you (well, the composter) keep up with the quantity of nappies?

Chocolateismyvice · 03/09/2018 11:23

Thanks for the replies! Surprised about the compost/landfill thing! Definitely something to research. We definitely do not have the means/space to compost in our current house.

For the pp who asked, we use disposables in the night out of convenience. My DP does the bath/bed most nights and he could not get on with the night nappies. He tried his best and will happily use cloth in the day, but prefers to use disposables at night. Out bathroom is small and have to close the door to stop running around so it's awkward for a 6"2 man to wrestle a gazillion layers on a strong, active, wriggly toddler in a small space Grin

Don't forget that beaming baby and naty do biodegradable nappy sacks (great for when you have to take the dirty nappy with you).

Runssometimes · 03/09/2018 23:01

MeyMary I have a hotbin composter. And he was dry during the day abd didn’t wet every night so it might have been about 4 nappies a week that needed to be composted.

BikeRunSki · 03/09/2018 23:06

I used cloth during the day and Bambo at night and in holiday. I also bought in bulk online. Not cheap, but they are fantastically absorbent, so I rarely needed more than one a night.
