In A&E with toothache

Have just arrived at a&e. Approached the desk and said I don’t know if I can be seen, I don’t expect anything in terms of work but help with pain relief.

IVe had a severe tooth ache for 3 days. Gone through 4 packets of paracetamol and ibuprofen. Not ate. Not slept. Been sick from the pain, shaking and sweating it’s been that bad. Sobbed last night it was so bad.

The man and the front desk really snottily asked me ‘have you been to a emergency reception before ?’ Made me feel like shit. I know it’s not a typical reason to come to a&e but I don’t have a dentist and I’m in agony. I’m in no less pain than people with medical reasons. I feel even worse now

Have you tried 111, should be able to sort and emergency dentist appointment for you.

People do go with tooth pain. Don't perceive anything as a slight, someone will help you. I hope it's fixed soon.

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 02/09/2018 21:07

I’m so sorry, you poor thing. You’re in agony, you have every reason to be there. I really hope you’re seen soon Flowers

Justabouthadituptohere · 02/09/2018 21:08

I went to a&e with severe tooth pain. I had a dry socket. Seriously worse than child birth. I was given some co codomol. Treated like crap at work. Nobody understood what dry socket was. It’s horrible tooth pain is. Get well soon OP Flowers

gamerchick · 02/09/2018 21:08

A&E wont help you. You need to see a dentist. Oragel and some decent painkillers tomorrow and try to find an emergency dentist.

Sympathies though, toothache properly sucks.

Sirzy · 02/09/2018 21:08

I would have thought calling 111 and getting either an emergency dentist appointment or ooh gp appointment for painkillers would be more appropriate really. And save you sitting for hours waiting!

bbcessex · 02/09/2018 21:09

I feel so sorry for you.

I had a hairline crack in my tooth that took forever to diagnose .. I was in agony for weeks, had an MRI and lost a stone ... completely understand your desperation . I hope you get some relief 🙏❤️🙏

PasstheStarmix · 02/09/2018 21:10

Toothache is one of the worst pains in the world. It’s bloody awful op. Have you tried cocodamol from over the counter? Also the drug sulphadine from over the counter is amazing for tooth ache get the fast acting one. Also get orajel the stronger one if you haven’t already, the stuff is amazing and completely numbs the area. Flowers

Kakamora · 02/09/2018 21:10

I’m hoping the person who sees me will be a lot more understanding. I know people here have serious problems. But also some are not as severe as mine either.

Unfortunately because dentists are private they're not easily accessible out of hours. In my experience (rural ED) the most we've been able to do is give some harder pain relief which is so frustrating for both the patients and us as they're obviously in pain. It makes us seem as though we don't care whilst in reality we don't have the services available to us to help :(

Op I really hope you get it sorted and feel loads better soon.

Kakamora · 02/09/2018 21:12

They won’t see me. They apparently don’t stock anything more than paracetamol in A&E. What shit is that? What on earth am I supposed to do now. I can’t cope with this pain another night. Paracetamol and ibuprofen don’t work

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 02/09/2018 21:14

Oh OP there's no pain like incessant toothache to drive you entirely mad; I've broken my leg before and when compared to three days of toothache I'd take the leg any day because toothache just never goes.

Hopefully they'll be able to offer some stronger pain relief til you can get an emergency dentist appointment.

bbcessex · 02/09/2018 21:14

So sorry, OP.
You need a late chemist.. Codeine / Solpadol or similar, then emergency dentist tomorrow

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 02/09/2018 21:15

OP I've had a dry socket, as a PP said the pain was worse than childbirth. I managed to get through the night with 600mg of ibuprofen, so 3 tablets from a normal pack. You can take this dose every 6 hours. Try that and phone a dentist at 9am tomorrow.
I feel for you toothache is horrendous Thanks

Blondebear123 · 02/09/2018 21:15

YABU. A and E is a waste of your time and the doctors time. Doctors know nothing about teeth. See a dentist tomorrow and get registered.

goose1964 · 02/09/2018 21:16

Can you get to a 24 hr chemist, clove oil works wonders for toothache

Daffodils07 · 02/09/2018 21:16

I overdosed (accidentally) on paracetamol last year because of toothache.
Couldn't take anything stronger because of breastfeeding and ibuprofen I'm not allowed either.
Was bloody horrendous and the relief when the affected tooth came out was enormous.
Maybe ooh would of been better for it but when your in agony I can understand doing the first thing that comes to mind.
111 in the morning should be able to either get you an appointment to a emergency dentist or give you a number for the nearest one.

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 02/09/2018 21:17

Co-codamol x

Seeingadistance · 02/09/2018 21:17

I'm in Scotland and when I had a dry socket a few years ago, I was told that A&E couldn't help, but instead was sent to an emergency dentist. They packed the socket for me (oh, the relief!) and gave me advice on pain relief. I had to pay for that - about £7.

Ask about the emergency dentist.

tenbob · 02/09/2018 21:17

Where in the country are you?

There are dental hospitals that can see emergency patients, and also out of hours dentists who can see you

HollyGoLoudly1 · 02/09/2018 21:18

I have total sympathy for your pain (I had extensive dental work last year and took weeks to fully recover) but it's neither an accident nor an emergency so the hospital won't help I'm afraid. If you can find a pharmacy that's open you can get co-codamol over the counter (solpadeine was great because it was soluble so I could swish it around the affected area - seemed to work faster that way) and get an emergency dentist appointment in the morning. Explain your pain levels and you should be given an appointment asap. Hope you feel better soon Flowers

lollythelurker · 02/09/2018 21:19

Toothache is the absolute worst 😯 I hope you can get something sorted quickly. Maybe rinse your mouth with some warm salty water to try and keep it as clean as possible incase of further infection?

thaegumathteth · 02/09/2018 21:19

Can you get to a chemists and get paramol?

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 02/09/2018 21:19

I'm sorry your in pain. The thing with dental care is that you need to keep it up and go twice yearly for check ups so that things like this don't happen. Hopefully you'll get an emergency appointment tomorrow - how come you don't have a dentist? Where do the kids go for their dental care?
