I'm being a CF, but wouldn't you in this situation?

My next door/over the hedge neighbour's house is empty. It has been for the 18 months I've lived in my home. He comes over every now and again and potters but I don't actually know what he's doing.

Anyway, sometimes when he's been, he leaves his black bin out for collection (collected fortnightly) and then the black bin is left out on the pavement until next time he comes. This Is usually weeks.

Every now and then when our black bin is full, I'll chuck the odd bag in his bin when it has been left on the pavement. I know it's CFery but wouldn't you?

Well I suppose you’re not depriving him of using the space as he doesn’t need it so it’s ok. Tbh though I would ask his permission.

VimFuego101 · 02/09/2018 13:01

I would tell him you're doing it, and return the favour by pulling it back from the kerb to his garden. It wouldn't bother me if someone did this.

Babyroobs · 02/09/2018 13:04

Ask him if you can do it and offer to bring his bin in for him then it sounds like you are doing a favour in return. Since the council took our large bin away ( we are a family of 6) we have to take excess rubbish round to my dads who hardly has anything in his !

Flashingbeacon · 02/09/2018 13:05

I’ve been on the dishwasher thread too so I’m probably a massive hypocrite but I don’t get why people are so invested in their bins.
Of course if his bin is empty just chuck some stuff in. I’ve said to my neighbours just to chuck their glass in with ours if it’s only a couple of bits. Common sense can be applied. People will need their buns day in day out but if they’re on holiday or not actually living there what harm can next doors rubbish do?

Iltavilli · 02/09/2018 13:09

Slightly off topic, but how are you filling your bin so much / so frequently? Large family with nappies etc? We’re not recycling obsessives (not even close) but produce one black bag a week so never fill our small black wheelie bin.

StylishMummy · 02/09/2018 13:10

@Iltavilli how?!

We are a family of 4, 2 DC in nappies and full a black bin bag a day!

We're on fortnightly collection and it's a nightmare, we recycle all cardboard, plastic, tins and glass

NationalShiteDay · 02/09/2018 13:11

Wow you're really living life on the edge aren't you OP.

honeysucklejasmine · 02/09/2018 13:13

I've got two in nappies too. I'd say our black bin is about 2/3rds nappies. We can recycle pretty much everything here, so other than plastic packaging (bags etc) that isn't recyclable, there's not much in our bin. We have a separate caddy for food waste too.

Iltavilli · 02/09/2018 13:14

@StylishMummy that’s why I asked the OP. We’re on fortnightly too, which for us and many others is fine. I mentioned nappies in the post as that’s understandable but the OP didn’t mention any such problem.

Babydusst · 02/09/2018 13:14

I've been known to do this and my neighbors actually live there Blush

@NationalShiteDay Grin

Pigsears · 02/09/2018 13:15

Use it. No drama. Don't give it a second thought.

Tuesdayquery · 02/09/2018 13:15

I'd definitely put his bin back for him either way as it's a major sign to burglars that's he isn't in for weeks.

Leeds2 · 02/09/2018 13:24

Wouldn't bother me using his bin, although I would probably ask him. I imagine he would be pleased, as it makes it look like someone is actually living in the house. I would also move the bin back off the pavement each week, and put it out the next.

JustMarried2018 · 02/09/2018 13:28

Good idea. I'll mention it to him if I ever catch him whilst he's here. We have 1 DD whose in nappies. A lot of nappies! Our recycling isn't great either. Nothing's for tins/cans and the only plastic they'll take is bottles. We also don't have a good caddie. It's not often our bin is so full we have to use the neighbours.

Most of our neighbours are students so not hear half the year. I always use their bin.

PinkHeart5914 · 02/09/2018 13:52

This thread is brilliant, seriously tell a man that is never home that you sometimes use his bin 😂 wft? Like anyone in the real world rather than the weird world of Mumsnet would say anything

You’ve borrowed his bin love not his wife, mention it and you will get a Confused look as he slowly backs away from you

Rufus27 · 02/09/2018 13:53

Slightly off thread, but we have two in nappies and our black bin is collected only once every three weeks (5 days longer on Bank Hols). By week three we've been known to beg neighbours (with no kids) for space in their bin. Luckily they are very obliging!

Nottotheirstandards · 02/09/2018 13:55

We have fortnightly collections and council gave 2 black bins as we have 2 in nappies! Didn't know this and was storing a black bag in the recycling then when the black bins where empty was transferring the black sack from the recycling to the normal bin. The smell was awful! Lucky I told my friend and the council gave another one. Much better now. We recycle most this vs our rubbish is mainly nappies, tea leaves, melon rinds and left overs not eaten. Most other stuff is recycled. However we don't have garden waste bin. We are on a waiting list! So either our garden is over grown or the black bin is full up. We have to decide whether to garden depending on how full the bins are!

GreenLily · 02/09/2018 14:03

My neighbour has left their black bin out on the pavement for over a month! I wish I was exaggerating. It makes me vom thinking about where they must be keeping their rubbish. I know they’re not on holiday or anything because their washing been out on the line regularly. It’s really not a hard task to bring your bin in. They definitely don’t have another black bin unless they keep it in their house

BookWitch · 02/09/2018 14:05

Our black bins are only collected every three weeks, but we do have very good recycling here.

The house next door to me is empty but being renovated at the weekends by the new owners who work during the week. They fill their black bin, but I put it out and bring it in for them as the pavement outside is very narrow and otherwise it would be out for the whole week.
They don't mind be using their recycling bins (which go out every week) if I run out of space. (eg lots of Amazon deliveries), as they are not using them at the moment.
This will obviously change once they live here.

It's all about give and take and being neighbourly. Some people can be wankers about their bins, the vast majority are reasonable as long as you ask nicely.

kateandme · 02/09/2018 14:08

not a problem at all.not even cf.its a bin pying empty.not worth energy thinking or worrying over this.as long as he wouldn't ever come back the night before needing it then that's fine.

Cindie943811A · 02/09/2018 14:34

We are virtuously recycling all that can be . Emptied fortnightly but by the end of week one it’s full to the brim. After collection we put out the surplus and the bin is about half full. We have some mobility problems so do a lot of shopping online. Four adults in household.
Since council discontinued medical waste yellow bags our black bin is not big enough for household waste.
I can foresee the rat problem growing

CookPassBabtridge · 02/09/2018 17:41

We were spoilt in our last flat as neighbour never recycled so he let us use his recycle bin, and his normal rubbish bin was only ever half full so we topped it up with ours.

We just about to manage to stuff it all in the bins we have now but it involves squashing things down! Family of 4, two in nappies.

scaryteacher · 02/09/2018 17:53

Flashing I don’t get why people are so invested in their bins. We pay by kg here, so if some one was using my bin, I'd be the schmuck paying for it.

Stormzyandme · 02/09/2018 17:56

Nothing's for tins/cans and the only plastic they'll take is bottles

There must be a supermarket recycling spot that takes them?
