Cleaning agency vs cleaner

Just that really. Looking for a cleaner and can't decide, so would you use an agency or a independent cleaner?

Hmmm I’ve used both. Independent cleaner is cheaper but I much prefer dealing with an agency and having insurance through them so unless you have a recommended private one I’d use an agency

Parker231 · 02/09/2018 08:11

We started off by using an agency. They are reliable, someone will always turn up and they stick to the agreed list of tasks. We now use an independent who only has a few clients. She comes two half days a week and does what needs doing - changing the beds, accepting the Tesco’s delivery, cooking some meals for the freezer, ironing, usual cleaning etc. She is much more flexible, knows us and just gets on with it.

Star81 · 02/09/2018 08:11

I have an independent cleaner. I like his because it’s always the same person who comes and therefore if I’m not in I o ow exactly who is in my house and she k ones the way I like things done / what to do without needing spoken with each week. However, it does mean when she’s on holiday nobody comes in her place. But I feel this is worth it just to have the same person constantly.

KERALA1 · 02/09/2018 08:15

Definitely an agency. With an independent one I found I got dragged into their lives, issues, bringing partners, sad stories etc. Agency is beautifully anonymous different people turn up and clean the house. The downsides worth massive upside of not having an independent cleaner

AnnaMagnani · 02/09/2018 08:17

Have always used independent cleaner.

Advantages- more flexible. Will probably do more random stuff. Cheaper.

Disadvantages - go off sick, go on holiday. However generally they have a mate who they will organize in their place if it is a planned gap.

kaytee87 · 02/09/2018 08:17

Ive used independent cleaners before and yes they're slightly cheaper but on the whole have been unreliable.
I'm just about to go back to work 17.5 hours a week and am organising for an agency cleaner.

KERALA1 · 02/09/2018 08:23

We had a few bad experiences with independents agency has middle man to sort out any issues it's horrible having to sort them out yourself

Wallywobbles · 02/09/2018 08:31

We have independent cleaner and her aunt comes when she can't. Unluckily the aunt is the better cleaner. But lovely woman.

01234543210backwards · 02/09/2018 08:39

Definitely independent.
Our local agency is £14, independent cleaner £10 per hour.
Independent knows our house, knows what needs doing and does it every week.
Agency had lots of younger people, who didn’t have much experience, so never did the job properly. They sent different people every week.
We have a dog, so every week it was making sure they knew where to shut the dog after, not to leave doors open etc, that dog doesn’t like vacuum cleaner.
Independent lady knows all of this, so feel comfortable with her.

I have a lot to do with the domestic cleaning industry in the UK and it seems that there variable quality of service to be found from either model.

With a company it just depends on thei business model and how the staff are obtained, trained an managed.

Solo cleaners seem to be deemed more unreliable and seem to be found to be more unprofessional in a lot of cases, some are not even carrying insurance which when you go into someone's home and handle all of their items as cleaners must is essential but on the flip side if you do find a good one they can be just as good a s trained staff of a company and often at half the price. Some solos will refuse to take responsibility - but not all! Find out about how they operate their business before you hire.

We own a domestic cleaning company as well as our industry involvement in general but it is a private company not an agency, the reason our clients say they will pay a lot more for our service and don't mind the costs involved being double what they used to pay in some cases is because they have had bad experiences with solo cleaners before so they understand the benefits of having staff managed for them and the service as a whole taken care of for them.

Also, of course we've had a few clients come to us from other companies who have also caused them dissatisfaction in some way so it works both ways.

At the same time it has to be considered that of course the clients who come to us have had bad experiences with their previous service provider or they would not be speaking to us for a quote if they were happy and settled with their current supplier. Some clients have tried a few different options before they settled with us, we hear it all! Also, in the odd case it then turns out that we also are not a good match for them either and that's fine too.

It all boils down to the fact that you just have to find the best match to suit your own personal needs, be that from a solo cleaner or a company. It's a highly personal service so take a bit of time and do a bit of research, read their website or fb page, whatever they use for marketing and see if what that person/company is a good fit for your needs. Once you find something that fits you, the relationship often lasts for years.

Make sure that both yourself and the service provider agree right at the beginning about the expectations from either party and make sure this agreement is clear. Some better companies (and some solos) will put a service list in writing for you so you'll know that these jobs are included within the price quoted and can be clear on what their service does and does not offer for that price.

As long as they are able to provide what you personally need and conduct their business professionally with insurance etc in place that's the main criteria rather than independent vs company.

Dieu · 02/09/2018 09:42

Agency. With the proviso that they always send the same person, unless sick or on holiday.
When I had an independent cleaner, the time off (usually for dramas) just presented too much of an issue.

Donna1001 · 02/09/2018 09:44

I’ve used both over the years, & had good & bad experiences with both.

The main reason I now use an agency is the time. I need 4 hours a week. An individual cleaner would of course be here for all of that time. Most weeks I’m at work when they come, but on the odd occasion I’m at home, I work in the office & feel trapped in there!

My cleaner before last could talk for England! I had to avoid her so she would get on with the work. The next cleaner didn’t talk so much but did complain about my house being too big, the decorative ornamental masks we have as ‘harbouring ullness’ & another picture as reminding her of blood. Very odd. Not her place to complain, & I was quite relieved when she resigned.

I now use an agency who send 4 cleaners, so are only there an hour.

Costs £15 an hour which is more than an individual but they use their own products.

Dieu · 02/09/2018 09:56

Yes, if the agency send two cleaners instead of one, and you're stuck at home, it's pure gold! The cleaning obviously gets done in half the time, so in my case 1 1/2 hours instead of 3. Really makes a difference.

Pyongyang · 02/09/2018 16:53

Thank you everyone, ok so mixed reviews. I'll start with an agency and see how it goes Smile

Our agency sends a team 2 sometimes 3 anonymous people just blitz house.

I had a nightmare with independents had to fire one it was mortifying

Shoxfordian · 03/09/2018 08:28

Good plan
I use an agency, probably more reliable and they check all the cleaning meets an acceptable standard

Hobbesmanc · 31/01/2019 15:11

Hmmm - I had an independent but I usd to feel she resented me leaving any instructions and she was prickly when we spoke. I then had an agency- they were expensive but I liked the fact that they claimed to be DBS checked etc. However I kept getting different ones and the standard was variable. I kept with them for a few years though until one of them stole from me. I've been lucky now following recommendations from a friend to have had the same wonderful lady for ten years- shes lovely and she has become like part of the family- also she sorts out cover when she goes on extended trips home (she's Polish)

Dieu · 31/01/2019 15:16

I wouldn't go back to having an independent cleaner, as it's such a pain when they're off. An agency can send someone else round in their place.

FirstMaidUK · 28/11/2019 16:16

Interesting comparison! Anyone from Manchester here? Who do you use? Any reliable cleaners you could recommend? Cheers! xx Halo

Laughterisbest · 28/11/2019 16:26

I've never had a cleaner but I'd start off with an agency even though it's dearer.
So much easier to terminate the contract if things didn't work out, with it being impersonal.

Hobbesmanc · 29/11/2019 14:23

I've had both. Started years ago with a private found through a card in the post office window. Didn't really work out at that point as we didn't feel very confident at tackling her when she just didn't clean very well. Ended up putting a note through her door with some horrendously made up excuse that we didn't need her any more.

We then had an agency- when they got a regular it was great for a few months but the turn over was really high and then we had some stuff nicked.

We had a couple more independent ones - one was a great cleaner but we got to friendly and then it all went a bit wrong. We have had a Polish lady now for over ten years and shes amazing. We pay £12 an hour (Cheshire) but she has never once let us down- she even gets cover for her holidays.
