Would you be worried about 10 month old being poorly like this?

DS has had a slight runny nose for a couple of days but been fine. He ate tea fine today, played happily after his bath then breastfed and took a bit longer than usual to rock to sleep.

He then woke an hour later inconsolable, arching his back and not wanting to feed. After about 20 minutes I managed to rock him to sleep.

After 15 minutes he woke again screaming and arching his back, no temperature but gave him calpol thinking it might help as it sounds like a pain cry, he took half an hour of screaming (he never usually cries much at all, and never like this) to rock back to sleep and then had to hold him for another half hour before he'd go down.

Is this normal for a minor illness? He's not been poorly before and his older sister has breathing issues that mean colds often end up needing hospitalisation and had meningitis as a baby so I'm worrying something's really wrong as I don't have a 'normal' experience of poorly babies to compare to, though know my anxiety about them being poorly is probably over the top due to experiences with DD.

Flowers for you, OP. I must admit I would be worried by that and would be calling 111.

Could be anything from a virus to threadworms with teeth inbetween. I wouldn't be worried about what you've described though. They get unsettled periods where they scream.

ThirdChildFourthPile · 01/09/2018 22:50

It is normal for a baby in pain, with something like earache or stomach ache or something.

I would be able to tell what you what pain and the severity of it.

I personally wouldn't worry to much about a pissed off baby, unless there was a few other symptoms (lethargy, high temperature, difficulty rousing etc).

My dd was like this when teething was inconsolable. If you are worried call for advice.

Happygummibear · 01/09/2018 22:52

Sounds like it might be teeth....

A few times mine would be screaming in her sleep unconscionable. Had to make her wake up before going back to sleep.

Feeding can be worse as well as it's pressure on the gum.

My hv always said that Calpol is for temp ibuprofen is for pain. Try 2.5mg of ibuprohen. If you have any teething crystals or bonjela give it a go.

If you can have a look in the mouth you may see red swollen gums on the front side and maybe a dark almost grey on the flat bit of the gum. If you see that then it's gonna be teeth.

If you are really worried though you can give 101 a call for advice.

When mine was teething I usually ended up co sleeping as it kept her calm.

Sorry my post is disjointed.

If you are worried speak to 111, they’ll always be happy to advise re such a young child. The fact he has no temperature is a good sign and points towards not being a serious concern.

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 01/09/2018 22:53

Have you tried keeping him upright or on his left side while he sleeps? Sometimes when they have blocked noses and have to breathe through their mouths, it gives them trapped wind. I suffer that myself, have done since childhood.

I wouldn't worry unduly, unless it goes on for days. However, saying that, I can't see him and don't know him so if you feel something is wrong, listen to your instinct and call 111.

Happygummibear · 01/09/2018 22:54

Sorry 111.... predictive text Blush

My DD was like this with tonsillitis. I think she did have a temperature too though.

bobstersmum · 01/09/2018 23:06

If no temp I wouldn't worry but I'd make gp appointment on Monday. My dd started at around this age with ear infections, the first time she actually had no temperature, I took her to be checked because she'd had a week of waking up all night screaming, it turned out she had a bad ear infection. I was so glad I took her. She then suffered time and time again and is now on a preventative low dose antibiotic and is a lot better at 16 months.
See how your dc is tomorrow.

Thanks everyone! He got up again just after but fed and didn't cry as much and this morning seems cheerful but has a dry horrible sounding cough so feeling a lot more relaxed now there's a clearer reason for it!
