Climate change

It might be a huge mistake to start this thread.
But here’s the thing: I know the planet is getting warmer and I know that will have catastrophic effects on our ecosystem.
But the planet has repeatedly got hotter and cooler over millennia.
Has human activity definitely caused this latest warming?
And, more’s to the point, is there anything we can actually do to reverse it?

By starting this thread I am hoping that genuinely well-informed people will come and explain it all to me.

genuinely well-informed people
Good luck with that.

garethsouthgatesmrs · 01/09/2018 21:27

Why dont you just research it? We could all claim to be experts and talk nonsense.

My take on anything like this is to assume that scientists and experts almost all agree so they are probably right. Why would you train for years in something to then just make shit up? It's the same with vaccinations.

LapinR0se · 01/09/2018 21:30

I’ve been on mumsnet a looooong time and there are a lot of people with PhD’s and the like trotting around in here. I would love to know whether it’s a black & white thing (like vaccinations)

I believe MN has a much neglected Climate change topic somewhere.

AlphaBravo · 01/09/2018 21:32

Have a look in to Dr Piers Sellers.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 01/09/2018 21:34

Basically we are fucking up this planet due to ignorance and selfishness.
The issues are endless

duckling84 · 01/09/2018 21:38

The problem with experts is that they only focus on the statistics and evidence that support their viewpoint. Finding one and evidence that is completely impartial is pretty much impossible.

Yes over the life of planet earth it has gone through warming and cooling and still survived to tell the tale. I'm pretty sure that no matter what we do, earth will remain. Human life however may cease to exist and that is more what climate change experts are worried about. All species will go extinct eventually, sad fact but true.

ShrinkWrap · 01/09/2018 21:41

The rate of increase in global temperatures since the start of the industrial revolution is much greater than has ever been seen in the history of all ‘natural’ climate change. There is clear scienticific explanation how CO2 emission etc can cause climate change. And a clear correlation between increased emissions and global temperature. I really don’t understand why people/countries can be in denial about it other than it suits them economically or politically

Sparklesocks · 01/09/2018 21:41

I mean literally hundreds, if not thousands, of top scientists have provided scientific evidence of climate change and have put their names behind petitions and lobbying with governments all over the globe.

So yeah that’s enough for me.

Why do you need posters to explain it to you? Are you incapable of using a search engine? Feels a bit lazy.

knittingdad · 01/09/2018 21:42

Yes, human activity is responsible for this latest warming. I recommend googling for "ipcc summary report for policymakers" which will go through the evidence at a high level.

If we stop burning fossil fuels we will stop making things worse. Reversing the damage already done is more difficult - but we don't have to worry about that until we've stopped making things worse.

We're not going to survive Brexit.
First page well done, bonus points to you.

doleritedinosaur · 01/09/2018 21:55

Yes the planet has been warming as we were coming out of an ice age however we don’t know if it’s the end of an ice age or inter medial stage.

However due to rising populations, industrial revolutions, fuel emissions, destroying the oceans & endless pollution we have massively increased the normal temperature increase.

I can’t remember the actual figures but it is a figure we can no longer turn back from.

Sea levels are rising especially as more ice sheets melt. The higher the temperature of the ocean rises the more danger there is of the gas hydrates at the bottom being released which would raise temperatures even higher & destroying marine life.

The fact governments take an almost blind eye to this is not good.

Gncq · 01/09/2018 22:00

Even though in the past the climate has warmed up /cooled down it has never heated up as fast as it is heating up now.

The change in types of and numbers of particles in our atmosphere has never changed as rapidly as it has in the past 100 years. Humans have caused these changes.

Not an expert. My father is a green party person.

specialsubject · 01/09/2018 22:11

ah yes - the Green party. the ones opposed to low carbon power stations (nuclear) in favour of onshore wind...

OliviaBenson · 01/09/2018 22:28

The info is everywhere if you care to google. Upshot is we humans are fucking up the planet and to be fair we deserve to be extinct.

But you do get people that think climate change is a myth/ it's ok because I recycle/ my having 6 children is nothing in the grand scheme of things. 🤷‍♀️
