Aibu - Parking fine squabble

FuckItPassMeTheWine · 01/09/2018 17:08

So last week I went to dine out with a friend of mine , I was going to park in a conventional parking lot but my friend kept on insisting to park on the street , it would be safe. It was fairly late and said no ticketers would be about at such a late time. I foolishly (against my own instinct) parked on the street as by this time I had grown weary of the conversation and her insistence.
When we leave the restaurant I see that I have a ticket, with a £60 fine.
My friend has kept telling me not to pay this . Today she calls and the fine came up , I advised her I was going to pay it (obviously) she then started literally shouting that I shouldn’t pay it and I wasn’t listening to her and then hung up on me Confused She then messaged me to say that friendship was about trust and clearly I didn’t trust her. This i just found weird. Aibu to think she is a crank? We were loose friends a while back and have recently reconnected after a few years.

She sounds barking. That was an expensive evening out for you, Op, if I were you I wouldn't be in any hurry for another meet-up.

mumofone234 · 01/09/2018 17:13

That’s really odd. Hmmm.

FuckItPassMeTheWine · 01/09/2018 17:16

I haven’t replied to her message as I think it would just get nasty.

Was she on commission for the parking company? Does she have shares in whoever would be enforcing the increased charges for non-payment?

For me, that would be our last meeting, unless she admitted she was wrong, and paid it in full, as she was insisting it would be OK. She turned it into your risk, and left you to face the consequences, while she got off scot-free. Did she make you pay for dinner as well? Does she generally have an invincibility complex? Is she so rich that a parking fine is loose change?

FuckItPassMeTheWine · 01/09/2018 17:24

@wanderings your comment has made me howl 😂😂

She sounds very controlling!

Is it a council ticket or a private parking company windscreen ticket?

FuckItPassMeTheWine · 01/09/2018 17:26

It was from a private parking company

QuizzlyBear · 01/09/2018 17:26

Trust her because her judgement has proved to be so stellar already on this one? Hmm

Sounds as though she's got a screw loose. Ignore her rubbish advice in future!

ilovesooty · 01/09/2018 17:28

She sounds bonkers. Ditch her.

GeorgeTheHippo · 01/09/2018 17:28

Have a look on the CAB website before you pay it. Some private companies can't get your details so although they will send a few letters they can't take it any further because they don't have your address

GeorgeTheHippo · 01/09/2018 17:29

But to answer your actual question. She's a fruit loop.

Topseyt · 01/09/2018 17:30

She sounds like a twat. I would message her only to say that you think she should consider paying half of the parking fine as she was jointly responsible for it, but nothing else.

She probably won't pay, so that will tell you for sure where the friendship stands, although I suspect you know that already anyway.

AveABanana · 01/09/2018 17:30

You trusted her when she promised you wouldn't get a ticket. That was her chance.

wanderings · 01/09/2018 17:30

Glad to have given you some comic relief in a very annoying situation. Grin But your friend reminds me of someone I knew who was "it will never happen to me" about many things; who probably spent her school career playing all sorts of pranks, and thinking she would never be caught.

Goodadvice1980 · 01/09/2018 17:31

Ok, where there any road signs?

Wait for the notice to keeper which must be sent to the registered keeper of the vehicle after 28 days but not after 56 days from the date on the ticket. There is an excellent fbook group called “fight your private parking invoice”, so I would recommend joining that group and posting up the paperwork for their advice. Do not name the driver though and cover up personal details.

Out if interest, which company was it?

ItsTheGloaming · 01/09/2018 17:31

@GeorgeTheHippo how are they sending the letters if they don't have your address?

EggysMom · 01/09/2018 17:32

Don't ignore it; but if you want to fight it, check out www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/private-parking-tickets/

FuckItPassMeTheWine · 01/09/2018 17:40

I’m looking on the CAB website now which gives some excellent advice , thanks to the poster who mentioned this ! My “friend” made no reference to this , just kept shouting Hmm

Private fines can be challenged, which is probably what she is trying to say.Council ones can be challenged but you are far more likely to be made to pay.

AnoukSpirit · 01/09/2018 17:43

"I did trust you, and now you owe me £60."

This is not a friend.

Goodadvice1980 · 01/09/2018 17:46

If it is a private parking company it is NOT a fine, only police and council tickets are fines.

StrawberrySquash · 01/09/2018 17:47

I wonder if the psychology is, she told you to park there so the fine is her fault. By telling you not to pay the fine, she gets to continue to belive she's not at fault. She just can't admit she's wrong. Also there's the thing of of it's a private company fine can they enforce it, which I, not being her, am not going to advise on!

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/09/2018 17:47

It sounds as if she’s struggling to get her point across and is taking this all very personally. Was she equally dreamy with scintillating conversation at the restaurant? I imagine not.

FuckItPassMeTheWine · 01/09/2018 17:47

Turns out they are a registered ATA so I need to pay the fine , again her advice was incorrect 😂😂, but I feel better for knowing this info .

Gersemi · 01/09/2018 17:48

Goodadvice, if OP parked on the street it's highly unlikely to be private parking.
