According to the news, end of the news, someone talking about being really badly off and saying they couldnt have a family trip to the cinema and how wrong it was that they couldnt afford this

I would argue that it is a Treat, spending that sort of money -

It depends where you live. We get meerkat movie codes so I pay £5 for me and DD.

Weekends are even cheaper, kids am £2.50 each.

If anyone's interested I am pretty sure the OP is referring to the mother who was suing the Government re: Widowed Parents Allowance and the requirement to be married. The quote was:

"Everything is a struggle. I have to count every penny. You know even just, just basic things that you would think that are just like a normal weekend for a family like to go to the cinema - I mean that's like a major treat and it shouldn't be".

It always was a major treat for me growing up and we would get to go on our birthdays and maybe one other time each year. I went frequently when I was at uni (student tickets ~£2 at the time and much cheaper than a night out drinking) but now in comparison with online streaming it's terrible value for money so I haven't been for years. I think it's unrealistic to think that it should be something to do every weekend.

We do it every week.

Growing up in the 70s our local cinema was 20p children and 40p adults. It was run by one woman who would take your money, then you would hear her walking into the projection room above to load the film the first film (remember you got 2 films in those days). Then come down to serve the ice creams in the interval then go up and load the main feature.

It was always pretty full.
