Parking

..though not a live parking war thread though, apologies.

I've recently passed my driving test and am still getting my head around parking/ stopping etc.

My daughter goes to a class every Saturday morning, it's stopped during the summer holidays so it's the first day back tomorrow.

I think there's a small section of single yellow lines there. But I'm not supposed to get out of the car on single yellows, am I? The Highway Code says only for dropping off. DD is 3, so I can't do this. Everywhere else is paid parking. This seems pretty unnecessary and £££ for 2 mins spent dropping off/ picking up.

I could get the bus as I have done for a year. However, it's a way away so I just hang around for 2 hours in a nearby coffee shop before collecting her. I'm a lone parent and don't get any child free time except when I'm at work, so was really looking forward to driving home and relaxing on my own sofa for that precious 2 hours Blush

Do I park on the single yellows (if there even are any, I'm not 100%)? Do I park in one of the ££ parking slots, dash in and not pay (there are lots)? Is this immoral/ am I likely to get a ticket? Or should I pay - but this would be around £6 for drop off and pick up. Quite a lot for me, and just seems silly. Should I just get the bus (but this would be a fiver too)? There's a Tesco's 5 mins away but minimum spend of a fiver to park, so would have to spend £10. It's at a school so directly outside there are those white jagged lines which say do not wait. But on a Saturday morning, maybe that's the place to stop?

What would you do, as a seasoned driver? I drive around and see so many people parking where they shouldn't, so so many people speeding or not abiding by the Highway Code - it's like there's this secret law of driving deviance that new drivers have no idea about! Grin

Disclaimer: anxiety. So if most people would just have a mooch around and decide the best option at the time, that's why I'm lying in bed tonight worrying about it Blush

You can park on single yellows if it's not in the paid parking time. If not you can't stop. Park elsewhere and walk with her

Tiredtomybones · 31/08/2018 23:45

Outside our local school there is a sign that says the restrictions are between certain times Monday-Friday. Is there a street a little further away without restrictions? Maybe see if you can park and walk a few minutes.

Seniorschoolmum · 31/08/2018 23:48

Check the parking restrictions for the single yellow line. It may apply only mon-fri. There should be a little sign on a post or pinned to a wall.
Don’t park on the white zigzags ever, that’s the most dangerous option.
I think I’d park on the single yellow line and walk your dd inside.

BananaSpljt · 31/08/2018 23:49

No, it's very very central. Everywhere's paid parking, except the Tesco's. Well, that's what google says. There's a road where parking restrictions don't apply in August, but that's no good obviously. How do I find out about the single yellow enforcement time? I take it they'll be a sign.

I know I sound clueless, but I've never drove there so I never took any notice of the signs. I guess I'll just have a look and if worse comes to worse I'll park in Tesco's. I'm wondering actually if you're only there 10 minutes maybe you don't have to buy anything. I'm sure I've heard that they let you park free for a really small amount of time. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Ah ok, I'll have a look around the single yellows and hopefully I can stop there. Fingers crossed they'll be a few others dropping off and I can just copy them!

I would park in Tesco and buy £5 of groceries that I would need anyway.

Comedyusername · 31/08/2018 23:56

Does the school have a car park for teachers? On a Saturday it would probably be fine to park there for a few minutes.

Or how about you go by bus this first time and scope it all out for the future?

Howhot · 31/08/2018 23:56

Just park, pay and go get your coffee Confused

BananaSpljt · 31/08/2018 23:59

I think the car park is locked, though I'm not 100% as I've never walked round that way. That would be ideal though.

Just park, pay and go get your coffee

Well yes, but sometimes it'd be nice to be able to cwtch on your own sofa watching tv or reading a book of a lunchtime in peace and quiet, when you literally haven't had the opportunity to do so in three years.

Thanks everyone, feel a bit more confident about it all now. Going to check the car park, if it's locked see if I can park on the single yellows. If not, will drive to Tesco's and hope I can stay for 10 minutes for free. If not, will just cut a tenner off the usual grocery shop and spend that on Saturdays from now on (tight budget). Thanks again!

Look on Google Street view, you should be able to see any parking restrictions or signs with enforcement times on there.
