To be annoyed?

Got home from work at 10:30pm, just finished a 12 hour shift as an A&E nurse and I’m beyond exhaustion. I got in bed around 11pm and when my house fell silent all I could hear was NDN’s 13 year old DD playing a recorder and singing at the top of her voice. My face was literally Hmm. I know it’s the holidays and it’s a Friday but personally a 13 year old should at least be unwinding in bed by that point. I appreciate that it’s fun having hobbies and she may well be practicing it for school but in a semi detached after 11pm isn’t really acceptable to me.

AIBU to be annoyed and want to —snap the recorder— go tell them to be quiet so I can sleep? It’s still going on as I post this

Recorder playing is never reasonable at any time of day or night, it's the devil's instrument I swear

MrsMozart · 31/08/2018 23:30

I'd be having a word. That's way too late.

Topseyt · 31/08/2018 23:33

Speak to them. That's not reasonable.

pictish · 31/08/2018 23:34

I don’t think 11 is late for a 13 yr old in the holidays...I’d say it’s pretty common for a kid of that age to be up and about at that time rather than ‘unwinding in bed’ (what even is that...who unwinds in bed?).

However, I do appreciate that the recorder is incredibly fucking annoying so on that yanbu...wouldn’t matter if it was 3 in the afternoon...shut up!

WorraLiberty · 31/08/2018 23:36

Of course YANBU to knock at the door and ask them to make her stop.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 31/08/2018 23:37

You’re not wrong, it’s too late. Anything loud that could go through walls, not really after 10, 11 at the latest. I think you’re well within reason to ask the parents to limit to before 10pm,

9amTrain · 31/08/2018 23:38

Yanbu. At all. Ugh.

maddening · 31/08/2018 23:46

Funny thing is, if you had said that ndn was having a house party with 100 people in and out of the house, with loud music and the sound of 100 drunk people laughing, shouting and generally being merry, you would have been told yabu, world doesn't revolve around you, right to enjoy themselves is as important as your right to peace blah blah

Yanbur by the way, regardless of the source of noise people should be more considerate, particularly in adjoining residence.

AnnieAnoniMoose · 31/08/2018 23:47

Nothing else is relevant (not your job, not that you’ve been at work, not that you think she should be in bed), simply that playing the recorder at that time of night is anti social. However, just ask nicely. She probably doesnt realise how far the soubd travels and her parents might not have heard her.

TroubledLichen · 31/08/2018 23:50

Her age, bedtime and your job are completely irrelevant. The point is that any noise that impacts on the neighbours at 11pm is anti-social and unfair. Go round and have a word.

WorraLiberty · 31/08/2018 23:56

I agree your job is completely irrelevant.

It's the time and noise that matters.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 01/09/2018 00:12

I don't think her job is irrelevant at all. I could do a 12 hour stint in my gentle office job and still be fresh as a daisy.

MajesticWhine · 01/09/2018 00:26

I would have a friendly word. YANBU

justilou1 · 01/09/2018 00:29

At that time of night, regardless of shifts, none of my words would be friendly if I heard a flipping recorder.

Wanttomakemincepies · 01/09/2018 04:55

All those people saying job is irrelevant have never done a long day in ED. It is physically and mentally demanding in ways that other jobs/departments are not. It is completely relevant. Sympathies OP, maybe she will 'misplace' it sometime soon.

NotTakenUsername · 01/09/2018 04:59

(what even is that...who unwinds in bed?)

Everyone I’ve ever known! Who even goes to bed and falls asleep like flicking a switch? That is not normal.

pictish · 01/09/2018 11:25

Well...I might read in bed etc...but I mean, I don’t send my kids to bed to ‘unwind’ - no one does.

“Right kids...time to get into bed to unwind!”
What?

Theweasleytwins · 01/09/2018 11:26

Urgh the recorder😑never sounds good

Returnofthesmileybar · 01/09/2018 11:29

Yanbu. The recorder is a teachers way of having a laugh at their kids parents, it's an evil instrument.

I always felt sorry for my neighbours listening to hot cross buns on repeat for months, then it moved on to three blind mice - they sound the exact fucking same, I get twitchy thinking about the recorder

Gettingbackonmyfeet · 01/09/2018 11:30

There is never a good time for a recorder yanbu

What kind of monster gives a recorder to a child? Special kind if hell reserved for people like that

RavenLG · 01/09/2018 12:32

Recorder playing is never reasonable at any time of day or night, it's the devil's instrument I swear
This.

TittyGolightly · 01/09/2018 12:34

I know it’s the holidays and it’s a Friday but personally a 13 year old should at least be unwinding in bed by that point.

My 7 year old was only just going to bed at 11pm last night.

a semi detached after 11pm isn’t really acceptable to me.

That’s not acceptable. I’d have had a word.

dancinfeet · 01/09/2018 13:37

your neighbour is being very unreasonable! My daughter has just gone to college to study professional musical theatre - even at the height of her auditions / exams I would not allow her to sing, dance or play music at that time in the evening, (or after 9pm) out of respect for our next door neighbours (who I cannot stand, BTW).
Even if the kid has a place in the national youth orchestra, still no bloody excuse at that time in the evening!

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/09/2018 14:24

Recorder playing is never reasonable at any time of day or night, it's the devil's instrument I swear It's a difficult instrument to play because keeping in tune relies on good breath control. So why anyone thought it was a good instrument to use to introduce children to playing I don't know. Add to that that they chose descant instead of treble or tenor, and play it as an orchestra of people all trying to hit the same note but not quite getting there, and it's no wonder that people don't like the instrument. For what the instrument can do listen to anything with Piers Adams or any of the other great recorder players.
