To not want to get splashed in the face whilst swimming

IKnowImAGrump · 31/08/2018 21:26

Went for what was supposed to be a nice, leisurely and peaceful swim at 9pm on a Friday night and yet again some inconsiderate twat gets in and starts hammering from one side of the pool to the other, arms and legs flapping about everywhere and splashing me all over the face and hair (I'm doing breaststroke) every time he shoots past me. I even said "EXCUSE ME!" hoping he'd move across (he had room I didn't).

Yes it's a pool and yes you get wet, it doesn't mean you should put up with other people disturbing you with their fucking splashy, watery presence.

People are cunts.

endless pool

Can stick my waterproof mp3 and get a decent swim without having to turn every 5 strokes

JynxaSmoochum · 01/09/2018 12:37

I've just realised why you get womens only sessions (privacy, body confidence, religion..) but not mens only... there would be no water left! Grin

Joey7t8 · 01/09/2018 13:20

Maybe they should have breaststroke only sessions only to appease those that want to serenely glide up and down the pool without getting their hair wet.

Joey7t8 · 01/09/2018 13:21

I have had a lot of swimming lessons in life so I am constantly irritated by people doing excessive splashing

And even when you were just starting out learning your front crawl technique, you weren’t a bit splashy yourself?

Brambleboo · 01/09/2018 13:22

I know exactly what you mean, OP. YANBU.

ForalltheSaints · 01/09/2018 13:23

Swim allowing a bit of space when passing is reasonable to be expected, not sure splashing can always be avoided. Unfortunately the opportunities for public swimming without a busy pool are limited. Local authority facilities have been cut back severely, and private gyms seem to be fewer in number with pools given the move to 'basic' gyms.

ToesInWater · 01/09/2018 13:31

YANBU. I only swim in my own pool (and yes, I know that makes me lucky but I live in Sydney). I hate being splashed.

schnubbins · 01/09/2018 13:34

My MIL swims like that ie head out of the water , legs treading underneath.we took her to Hawaii and she wanted us to find a beach without waves!

schnubbins · 01/09/2018 13:35

Because she doesn't like getting her face wet.

dancinfeet · 01/09/2018 13:44

some people have the knack of swimming gracefully and slide through the water like an otter, others flail about trying to throw as much water out of the pool as they can as they plough up and down like a submerged combine harvester. OP - YABU if you expect everyone to swim the same, everyone has the right to use the pool and swim (or thrash about) in their own way.

user1485342611 · 01/09/2018 15:21

YANBU, that drives me mad. It is nearly always men who do it. That being said, the last time someone splashed energetically past me and I looked angrily around to see who it was, it was my elderly mother overtaking me Smile

bruffin · 01/09/2018 16:33

N9, because im a breaststroker who does it properly and head up breaststrokers /bad stroker are really really annoying.

noeffingidea · 01/09/2018 16:48

I've seen some headsup Bstroke swimmers who are really fast.
It depends OP. I don't think you can complain about just being splashed. On the other hand we used to have a swimmer in our pool who created such a tidal wave in the pool that he was actually a danger to other swimmers. He was a very strong swimmer but he used to over exagerrate the up and down action in his breastroke, and a lot of people used to get submerged when they weren't expecting it. Pools are for everyone, social swimmers, paddlers and strong swimmers alike, and there has to be some consideration for everyone.

trippingoverrainbows · 01/09/2018 16:53

I think you may benefit from a few swimming lessons OP. If you're doing breast stroke properly your hair should most definitely be wet. It sounds a bit like you're a nervous swimmer but you can't be angry at someone for swimming in a swimming pool. Swimming makes at least some splashes. Fact (if you're doing it properly).

MrsOake · 01/09/2018 20:44

I can’t imagine how a head up breaststroker could be really fast. They’re surely almost in standing position which isn’t exactly speedy.

5000KallaxHoles · 01/09/2018 20:53

I'm a slow lane swimmer - I'm slow, know I'm slow and I like being near the sides for lack of confidence/stamina. Quite how a lane with a fat bird in it plodding through lengths sedately, with a huge sign at the end saying "slow lane" on it seems to be a magnet for knobheads in budgie smugglers who think they're in the Olympics is beyond me - but they do it - and I can only conclude they do it for an ego boost to feel like they're "outpacing" someone and because their egos won't take the fast lane where they'd get left for dust. They'll swim right on top of you even if you're right over to the edge and kick you physically as they go past you and in such a way it's bloody obvious it's only half accidental. Various strokes done by me so it's not just a "not wanting to get face in water breast stroke thing" - my stamina swimming is dire, but my stroke technique is actually pretty damned good (apart from butterfly but that can just go fuck off).

That, along with the fucking perv who openly just swims physically underneath women so he can cop a gawp and "accidentally" feel you means I don't bloody go swimming much anymore.

Local council pool, have complained numerous times - nowt gets done. Women-only session time not at a time accessible to anyone who works.

Maybe, but people swimming in a swimming pool and your face getting wet is not evidence of it. Stop being a wimp and swim properly!

are you one of those that glare at everyone is daring to use the pool when you;re in it?

bruffin · 01/09/2018 21:45

The people who annoy me are those that swim in flippers when the lanes a busy and do tumble turns, which is dangerous.

The 3 old ladies who swim 2 side by side and the 3rd backwards having a chat.

Redteapot67 · 01/09/2018 23:34

Flippers are banned in most pools I thought

bruffin · 02/09/2018 07:17

Restraint
Fins are allowed in adult lane swim sessions in ours.

Joey7t8 · 02/09/2018 08:47

If I was a millionaire, I wouldn't have my own pool. There's no lifeguard and I wouldn't swim with no one else around.

Having the money and space to have my own private pool would be amazing, so I’d take my chances swimming alone. Besides, I’d probably swim in the buff assuming the pool wasn’t overlooked, so the last thing I’d want would be a lifeguard watching!

greathat · 02/09/2018 08:54

I swim head out breaststroke- I wear glasses and can't see without them so I keep them on :)

You can get prescription goggles nowadays, often quite cheaply

CandidaAlbicans · 02/09/2018 11:03

There's one guy who does this at the pool I go to. He's been nicknamed "the majestic sea flap flap"
Grin

So I am a face out of water swimmer and never got taught to swim properly when young. Bit late to learn now
Never too late. I learned to swim as a child but as an adult I went back and did adult lessons to improve my technique. Lots of adults there who were just learning to swim. It was great to see Smile

This! Seriously, they're a game-changer. They sell them to the nearest 0.5 diopter - no correction for astigmatism, obviously, but plenty good enough to mean I can recognise DS from the other end of the swimming pool. 15 quid well spent online.
