Around five weeks ago I went on a car insurance comparison site and was quoted lowest £233.

Today I was quoted lowest £480 all the same details.

What the fuck?! Please be joking! PLEASE.

The closer to your renewal date you get the higher your quote tends to get, as your options become more limited I’ve found.

You get the best deal a month/3 weeks before your renewal date - leave it to the last minute & insurers assume you’re disorganised, therefore a greater risk.

I've had the car on lease for three years (through work) and I'm buying it at the end of September

Insurance worker here.... nothing to do with your insurer thinking your disorganised. It’s because premiums are based on how much money they need to make to pay the claims and overheads they face and the risk you present. Lots of claims or one great big one means they need to make more money. Or if they have had loads of claims from people in your rating category they may not want to do so much of that business because of the risk therefore the price increases to reflect that... you are less likely to take their product if the price isn’t right and therefore less risk to the insurer. Premiums fluctuate frequently.

Supermum29 if I'm buying the car I've leased and the fleet company give me a letter confirming the one claim I made 2 years ago wasn't my fault (other driver admitted it was his fault and was taken to court) will insurance companies accept that as NCD? Also I never made any claims for 9 years before that when I had my private car - what about my NCD for that? I'm so worried 😟

I read on MSE that quotes increase substantially nearer to the start dates. I recall from what I read that quotes remain on offer for a while so the trick is get a quote early but don't act on it until you need to.

I'm thinking it would be a good idea to buy the car, insurance it for a month later and just not drive it for a month!
