They should have told me first?

In a private rent terrace that has a shared front gate and path between the front gardens. The landlord and neighbours have shared ownership of them. The neighour’s 4 dogs have absolutely destroyed the gate and steps making them a safety hazard. They’ve been like that since before I moved in, at least 5 years.

I opened my curtains this morning and saw the neighbours chiselling away at the steps. They have also taken the gate off and it looks like they’re getting it replaced by some workmen. Equipment and materials strewn all over the front path blocking my front door. AIBU to think they should have at least told me what they were doing first so I could have made the landlord aware? They’re blocking the access to the front of the house and making alterations to shared land. We’re on good terms so they could have easily knocked on the door and given me a heads up. Just seems a bit rude

They might have spoken to the landlord who just hasn't told you, surely it's a good thing if they're repairing the damage they caused even if it causes a couple of days of inconvenience.

I called the LL straight away and he hasn’t had contact from them. They don’t really know who he is as they moved in after the house had started being rented out and it’s also through an agency. I’d be a bit miffed if I was him as they’re more than likely going to ask him to pay for half and he hasn’t been consulted about it in any way. My main issue is they’re completely blocking the front of my house and they didn’t warn me. I could just open the door and speak to them but feel a bit awkward with the workmen there too. Don’t want to seem like the crazy neighbourConfused

Is this actually causing a problem for you though or are you just looking to be annoyed? If you need to go somewhere just say excuse me to the workmen and they will move Confused

lunatunes · 31/08/2018 11:48

I really don't see what the problem is surely you can still get in and out? I would think it's a good thing that they are sorting out the steps/gate.

CripsSandwiches · 31/08/2018 11:49

Yes they probably should have mentioned it but probably assumed it wouldn't be much of a problem (I'm assuming you can get in and out?).

I once lived in a shared rented house in which the landlord decided to re-cement the front path one morning without telling any of us. Each of us in turn left for work and walked straight over the wet cement leaving massive footprints all over it. Landlord wasn't best pleased but we pointed out he really only had himself to blame.

BitOutOfPractice · 31/08/2018 11:51

Can’t you just ask them to move if you need to get out?

I assume they’re going to make it better for you all so why are we you upset?

AnEPleaseBob · 31/08/2018 11:53

They can't get him to pay, and thats none of your business anyway

ReservoirDogs · 31/08/2018 12:22

Sorry - am I missing something. You are cross because a gate and steps which have been ruined/damaged for 5 years are being fixed and you don't have to pay either?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 31/08/2018 12:27

I'd be worried too OP - as a tenant, you always worry in this situation that the LL will end up blaming you for something the neighbour did or didn't do, and it's horrible getting in the middle of it.

Maelstrop · 31/08/2018 12:28

Pmsl, pretty much!

NorthernKnickers · 31/08/2018 12:32

They could be planning to move out and repairing damage beforehand. If they don't they'll be charged for it. You're being a bit paranoid here OP...just chill...it's not your damage! Just send a quick text/email to the LL or estate agent saying what's happening then forget about it. You don't need to give this anymore headspace 🙄

Gersemi · 31/08/2018 12:43

It may be that they've sorted it out with the agents. Have you checked with them?

pictish · 31/08/2018 13:22

Can’t say as that would bother me. It’s getting fixed so it’s all good. It probably didn’t occur to them to let you know with being a non issue.

butterflysugarbaby · 31/08/2018 13:26

WOW. Some people just have to find something to be annoyed about!

They are fixing the damage. What MORE do you want?! Hmm

Merryoldgoat · 31/08/2018 13:30

Lots of assumptions there - I fail to see how this is your problem at all except for accessbeung blocked, which you can talk to them about.

Cheby · 31/08/2018 13:34

It’s a bit inconsiderate, it’s not a massive deal though.

KnotsInMay · 31/08/2018 13:37

Are you saying you are unable to get out of your house?

Just ask them to move stuff so you can get in and out.

It's good you told your LL.

What more is there to say or do?
