to think that if you reckon your kid hasn't had nits/threadworms recently...

... then they're probably the source.

Surely the main difference between kids (at least at primary school) is not whether they get them, but whether it's recognised and treated? Are nits really that picky about whose head they infest? If 40% of kids at any one time have threadworms, then is it really possible that so many kids are thought by their parents to never get them?

My kids seem to crawl with parasites regularly. I treat it thoroughly and then, a few months later, they're back. I'm not alone in this, am I?

Worms most people actually do have them, but the numbers are very low due to the inhospitable environment they reside in possible whatever the person eats that they just don’t notice them..
I mean we’ve to regularly worm our pets but we don’t do so ourselves, no way has anyone went through life and not ingested a worm egg.
Some people just get them in heavy numbers for whatever reason.

Even if u don’t think you have them or ur kids u should still be giving them a tablet once in a while to make sure.

I have a "no nits policy" in our house too but the little buggers just ignore it Grin

We have lots of thick clean hair nits adore us. My nitty gritty is one of my most used purchases

CuntyMcFuckerson · 01/09/2018 21:14

Mine are 10 and 13 and never had them.

I check on a regular basis, even get my DH to check my hair too! I've read a million MN threads about nits so just assumed they'd eventually get them so have always been vigilant so I could get rid as soon as possible. Just never happened.

Never had worms either but that one seems to be a 'good have them but not know' thing.

Assuming people definitely all have but just don't know ( re. Nits) is just plain daft. Just because your dc "crawl with parasites" doesn't mean the rest do too.

But if your school had a no nits policy then they wouldn't be coming into your house because there wouldn't be kids at the school passing it onto your kids.

MissMarplesKnitting · 01/09/2018 21:49

We had a parent at DCs school ranting about how her child was always catching nits. She was forever treating said child, and why weren't the parents of the infestor child doing anything.

Family moved.

Nobody had nits in that class since. Make of that what you will shrugs

Both mine have had nits and worms. I bit check weekly, tie back hair and use repellent. Not much more I can do.

aaaaaahhh has this thread made anyone else itchy?

ItsColdNow · 01/09/2018 21:56

I disagree. Number of kids here.
Had nits a couple of times (2 kids never yet 2 loads) the repeated infection of my son turned out to be his best friend. They were falling off him 🤮 his mother said he ‘was just one of those kids’ and said she couldn’t get rid of them. But it had taken me months to realise that was the source. But still 2 of the children never got them. Since then we’ve found a couple twice. (3 years) and yes we check.
Worms. Yuk. 3 of my children have had minor repeated infections not seen in poo but migrated to vaginal area (only 1 or 2 but very sore and unpleasant) so full treatment and hygiene and wipe down, hoover etc. Yet 1 child had repeated infections. Apparently this is sometimes the case, it can be really hard to break the cycle and cause terrible anxiety/over handwashing till raw. Dr seemed to think it was unlucky and in the end a targeted treatment of 4 doses over 2 weeks saw them off but it was hideous for her.
With nits it’s unlikely to be someone who says their kids never had them it’s more likely to be a kid who isn’t treated at all. School said they weren’t even allowed to tell the parents just send out a general ‘there are nits in yr 1’ etc... even though they knew the source. Really sad.

ItsColdNow · 01/09/2018 21:57

*wipe down and hoover of the house, not the offending area Grin

rainingcatsanddog · 01/09/2018 22:01

I have 3 kids (2 boys and 1 girl) and they all got bits once (different times) and none of them have ever had threadworms thanks to Carex Strawberry laces hand wash. They are all secondary school aged and have rooms like a bombsite but wash their hands after using the loo.

rainingcatsanddog · 01/09/2018 22:02

Bits = nits obviously

Poodletip · 01/09/2018 22:07

Mine have all had them at some point but not for ages. I think, with nits at least, some children are more prone to getting them than others, which sucks if it's you. One of my children has gone through primary school with a boy who he sees the nits crawling around on his head but even so only managed to get them himself a few times.

OneAndDoneForNow · 01/09/2018 22:33

Hmm so what happens if threadworms arent treated? In retrospect im pretty sure my siblings and I had them a few times (itchy bums, sister crying about vaginal pain etc) however my parent just took this as we needed a good bath and we were never treated however this was 20 plus years ago and i hope i dont have them now!

ItsColdNow · 01/09/2018 22:44

@OneAndDoneForNow well if you are pregnant or under 2 you can’t take the medication, you therefore observe the clean hands, regular washing, clean all bed linen etc and hoover and the cycle will be broken and they will die and pass. I’ve never taken the medication as when my kids had them I was pregnant and as a general rule Good cleaning and hygiene routines would mean they would go. Any case where they did not, you would know about as the symptoms would progress.

APMom · 01/09/2018 23:13

6 kids and never had worms but had headlice with the oldest 3 a few nights before dd4 was born. I had to treat and fine comb and swore never ever again would I use the chemicals. For years after I would fine comb their hair every week or two but my girls always had their hair in tight plaits and never got them again. My boys have never had them and I check regularly. They are 15 and 12.
