Aibu to throw these dummies away...

Mother of a seven week old. Getting a little anxious over some of her dummies. They are showing bubbles inside the teats when I wash them.

I threw the first two I saw like this away. Yet the two I brought today have done exactly the same thing. They respond well to the "pull test". Yet I can't get over the unsettled feeling that if bubbles are getting inside there must be a hole somewhere?!

I accept i may just be paranoid but I really want to make sure nothing bad happens. I read a story about a baby choking on one that broke and it's now made me even more concerned. Especially as sometimes we allow her to fall asleep at night with one in her mouth to help with soothing her to sleep.

If they're making you anxious then throw them out OP.

The gap will be where the test rests in the plastic part. It will be the seal. I don't think they use any adhesive in them as you'd need the air to get in and out when they suck. I don't think we had any which didn't get bubbles in at some point. How are you washing them?

I would wash them in hot water then drop in sterilising fluid. At least then if you saw bubbles you'd know th sterilising fluid had got in there so it wouldn't be germy.

Otherwise, if two lots have done it, retain the packaging and contact the company. They may be faulty or they may have an explanation as to why the bubbles persist.

All DDs dummy have got water in when I wash them I just make sure it's all drained out and dried and sterisile them.

GummyGoddess · 30/08/2018 19:10

If you squeeze when washing them they will suck in water. Just squeeze it out and sterilise. If soapy then squeeze out under clean water.

Jackieyoulooknice · 30/08/2018 19:12

They need to have a way of getting water in them, you're supposed to squeeze clean water inside and then squeeze it out.

Congratulations on your baby 😍
Can you show the health visitor when you get your baby weighed? Maybe don't use them until then, if you're concerned, don't take a risk, there's plenty of other things to be on a new mum's mind, don't add to it unnecessarily. But equally, don't spend a fortune on new dummies you don't need to!!!!

Thank you guys.

I've been using hot water with fairy liquid and then a microwave sterilizer.

I have no more home visits with HV but will contact them in the morning to check their take on it.

Until then she will only be allowed to sleep with ones that show no bubbles inside and I shall stay up and plop it out the cot once it drops. (It always flops out once she's in a nice sleep)

Thank you guys again! Glad to know I'm not being completely silly. I've been over stressing on a lot of what I know to be silly things since having my DD so I just needed some reassurance I wasn't going completely potty on this one!

It's just washing up water in them squeeze the teat to get it out and sterilise !

mrkaykay · 30/08/2018 21:27

Our mam dummies all get this. I'm pretty sure I read on the packaging it's normal something to do with so it can be sterilized internally too.

MemorylikeDory · 30/08/2018 21:44

Tommiee tippiee dummies take in water near the flippy handle bit and mam dummies take in water between the circle plastic bit and the mouth plastic bit.
After washing squeeze them upside down and water should squeeze out. Then let them dry upside down and sterilise as normal.
Like you said as long as they're ok with the pull test the water will be getting in from the front plastic bit.
