Should you get in trouble for saying bloody at work or at school? Same as if you said f*ck or something?

Apologies in advance for any offence caused but

We used to say this at school

Bloody in the bible
Bloody in the book
If you don't bloody believe me
Have a bloody look

This just popped in to my head I must be going back 40 yrs with this

I told my ds off for being 'so bloody rude' earlier.

Oh dear 😳

Ethylred · 30/08/2018 22:36

They are all very very rude.
Even blimey (may God blind me).

I would say that it's a swear word, but a very mild one.

I wouldn't have let my dd use it at home when she was younger, but don't really mind it now that she's a teenager. I'll use it to/in front of her very occasionally if I'm really exasperated (I use far worse when she's out of earshot!).

I teach primary and would never use it in front of the children, parents or members of the senior team. The children wouldn't say it in front of me (although some of them will use worse when they're on the playground).

My DC understand that some words are swear words here but not in other countries eg the US. They know that crap is v v mild in America and turns up on their kid shows, but is not acceptable in the U.K.

Bloody is a very mild swear word imo, I'm allowed to say it when they are really annoying me but they are not allowed to repeat.

Typing this out makes me wonder if I'm completely confusing my DC!

Bloody Nora, I didn't realise it offends so many people. I agree about school and it depends who you are working with.

Stephisaur · 31/08/2018 22:31

It’s not a bloody swear word ;)

Although my mum still pulls me up on it. I also get told off for saying “it’s pissing it down.” Grin

Teenagemaw · 31/08/2018 22:37

@Guiltypleasures001I was going to post the same... learned that rhyme as a young catholic schoolgirl.

Gingaaarghpussy · 31/08/2018 23:18

I got into more trouble saying 'blimey' and 'bugger', although my mother used 'bloody'. My dad explained the first 2 and said 'ruddy' for the third.
Nobody has ever explained whether its worse than other harsher (imo) swears.

8misskitty8 · 31/08/2018 23:25

In my opinion it is a swear word but The film certificate classifications don’t seem to think it’s a swear word as Harry Potter and the philosophers stone is certified a U !
But it has Ron saying ‘bloody hell’ and Draco said ‘fat arse’ (which is worse ) in the film.
Hence the reason it was banned in our house when it came out on dvd as dd1 who was about 3 at the time kept repeating those 2 phrases after watching it.
