In a nutshell: the Department of Work and Pensions has spent over £108 million in two years opposing Benefits appeals. And that is presumably not taking into account what the Ministry of Justice has to spend arranging and hearing the appeals.
But it's OK, according to the DWP, because only a small proportion of appeals get upheld. That "small proportion" is some 68% - and that's after a high proportion of changes following mandatory reconsideration.
