How do I stop this?

Sorry not AIBU but need traffic.

My son always gets out of his car seat straps - obviously this is dangerous and there are times I can't pull over and sort him out but when I do he just does it again straight away... distraction only works for a few minutes any ideas? Pic attached of what he ends up like! Thanks

My kids went through a period of doing this. I just tightened the straps as much as I could and told them the Police Man/Woman would shout at them if they did it again. It worked (but I appreciate yours might be younger). I wonder if there’s a clip or something you can attach to the straps

MrsDc7 · 30/08/2018 07:44

In fact I’ve looked at the pic again and yours looks very young... probably too young to fear the fuzz Grin

tempEmails · 30/08/2018 07:44

Our baby seat came with a sternum strap. Could you make or buy one

Duct tape?

user15893 · 30/08/2018 07:46

Yes he's 19 mo this so doesn't understand anything yet. I obviously say to him "no keep them on" but he's just like HmmI wondered if the chest clips you can buy would work but there's so much padding on the straps I don't think they would go round them Sad

Get some velcro and cut it to size/length and put it round the straps at chest height?

CustardOmlet · 30/08/2018 07:56

I bought a Houdini strap (Amazon I think) which worked brilliantly.

Childrenofthestones · 30/08/2018 07:57

Taser stick.

fuzzyfozzy · 30/08/2018 08:00

Please don't use duct tape, what would happen if there was an accident.
I used car seats with the belly bat, the belts threads around and is very safe. Ch can't reach the buckle at this age.

Winosaurus · 30/08/2018 08:02

Childrenofthestones 😂😂😂😂

beingsunny · 30/08/2018 08:14

Houdini strap! These are super!

MrsDc7 · 30/08/2018 09:12

Taster Stick brilliant idea Grin

Racecardriver · 30/08/2018 11:20

Mine did thus a lot. They only stopped when we moved up to booster type seats.

Racecardriver · 30/08/2018 11:22

A very firm no also worked but it required constantly looking back to check on them.

MynameisJune · 30/08/2018 11:24

Adding anything to the straps on a car seat is dangerous, chest clips are banned in the EU that’s why no car seats have them on over here.

The only safe way is to change seats to an impact shield seat. It’s what my friend had to do as nothing else worked with her DD.

DrunkenUnicorn · 30/08/2018 11:25

We got one of the chest straps from amazon. I don’t remember the brand name. Be safe also make one too.

Grizistheshiz · 30/08/2018 11:30

NEVER make your children scared of the Police. There could be a time in their life when they are lost or in trouble that the my need confidence to approach a Police officer.

Grizistheshiz · 30/08/2018 11:32

*that they may

Post sounded harsh, sorry, but this is really important.

MrsDc7 · 30/08/2018 11:43

Oh fgs. Thank you for the lecture Griz on what was a light hearted statement. My children are well educated and come for a sensible family. They are well aware that the Police are there to protect and look after us but are also there to enforce the rules. Thank you for the concern

PotteringAlong · 30/08/2018 11:45

We used a Houdini strap too.

Givemestrengthorgin · 30/08/2018 11:48

Can you raise the height at the back of the seat? The straps of my DS car seat used to flop down, even when pulled tight then I realised the back of his seat could be raised, raising the shoulder height of the straps. That made the straps fit much better and more difficult to wriggle out of.

fruitofthenight · 30/08/2018 11:49

There is two things, the besafe harness collector or 5 point plus anti escape. I see both of them recommended on a car seat group I'm part of so assume they're safe and tested.

Grizistheshiz · 30/08/2018 12:31

@Mrsdc7 Calm down, Dear, or I’ll get the Police to come and shout at you and your ‘well educated children’ lol!
