To want an Apple Watch without the notifications?!

Am considering getting one as I get palpitations and have had weird 'episodes' for some time of increased heart rate - I'd like to monitor and record these if possible.

Admittedly it might also be useful for music/podcasts/notifications when I'm running and gardening (I have a 7plus which i love but not the most portable)

Also for organisation- I set regular reminders on my phone for calendar events, stop me forgetting general stuff at home and work.

But

I've resisted for a while because I don't want to be constantly connected IYKWIM - yes it might be useful when out and about but is it easy to use it as 'just a watch' when you are trying to wind down at night, avoid screens etc? (just take it off I suppose?!)
A friend has one and is VERY easily distracted by it - this annoys me (although it's fair to say she's also like this with her phone, not just the watch) and I don't want to become like this.

Do you have one and love it/hate it? I would like to try one out to give it a test run I guess without the ££ commitment! But as that's not really an option I need opinions, people!

Just turn your Bluetooth off and you won’t get notifications. It will then sync all the data from that day the next time you connect to your phone.

I like mine and I wear it BECAUSE I want to get notifications (among other things!) but it’s easy enough to avoid them.

I love mine but if I get annoyed then, yes, I take it off and put it on to charge upstairs.

Lonecatwithkitten · 29/08/2018 17:37

If it is just for your heart rate you are primarily interested get a Fitbit that does heart rate. My DP/ his cardiologist uses his to monitor his heart condition it also pairs with his garmin when he does serious exercise.

Can you look at second hand ones that do cash trade-ins? My Dsis took hers in the other day as she's changed to android. Then you can try it out without forking out £££'s for a brand new one. If you find you like it then you can splash the cash?

You can easily turn off notifications from the watch app, I only get calls, texts and what’s app notifications as I found linking it to Facebook etc got way too distracting.

I have a Garmin smart watch which I use for all the running and heart rate features but it also shows text & FB notifications if you want it to but you can turn them off for each app individually and choose which one you have or don't have. Doesn't the apple watch have the same?

Ok so it is pretty configurable then. Is it as useful as I hope for general day-to-day organisation- alarms, reminders, calendar etc?

My husband bought me mine as a birthday/Christmas present 2 years ago and I love it. I am unable to wear "normal" watches so he bought me mine praying it would be ok on me Smile

I just disconnect the Bluetooth, from my phone, and then the notifications stop but I don't have that many anyway. The feature I use most is "silent mode"

Hufflefloof · 29/08/2018 19:25

You can use it for quite a bit of stuff, you can set alarms and reminders, link it to your calendar. I use mine to control music in the car (using Siri) as my iPhone is linked to car Bluetooth. You can also sneaky text from it, answer calls etc. Fitness tracker and workouts are good too

noblegiraffe · 29/08/2018 19:38

I love mine. You get to decide what notifications you get and which you don’t. It’s not really like a screen, you can’t browse the internet on it or anything really involved. There’s no keyboard, if you want to reply to text messages you either handwrite a letter at a time, or speak your response (actually, this is really good) so it doesn’t really suck your time in the way a phone might.

I was doing something pretty stressful once and it pinged and said ‘you’re sat on your arse doing nothing and yet your heart rate is over 120, what’s going on’, which was pretty clever - this sounds like what you are looking for and you can set the heart rate it alerts you at.

Oh this is interesting. I'm thinking of getting my ds an Apple Watch to help monitor seizures but was concerned about him being distracted by texts/calls coming through.

Thatsfuckingshit · 29/08/2018 19:56

I have a samsung gear s3 and pre ordered the new galaxy. I like the notifications especially at work. My work calender is synced so I don't have to be on my laptop to see reminders and my phone can stay locked in my drawer when I am at my desk. I don't have my email on it. I don't n3ed to know I have another piece of junk mail in my personal inbox.

My boss has the Apple one and you can easily turn off notifications. You can be as connected at you want.

Ok, sounds pretty good then. Think I'll have a look around for a second hand one - thanks for advice peeps!
