Not buying LOL dolls for DD

Is anyone else in the same boat? DD1 is 4, nearly 5 and just started school a few weeks ago. Ever since she started she’s been going on about LOL dolls and asking when she can get one. We don’t really buy many toys outwith birthdays and Christmas and I don’t really want to go down that road. They seem expensive, especially as you can end up with doublers, and we’ve also been making a real effort to cut down on toys. It also seems like it’s a competition amongst the mums as much as the kids to get rare ones. At the same time, I really don’t want DD to feel left out. I know this will be the first of many trends that I won’t feel comfortable keeping up with but I don’t want DD to suffer because of my decisions iykwim. AIBU to not buy them? What have you done if you’ve felt the same as me?

I googled them. They look kinda ugly, but I think I would buy one if I had a daughter. I remember bringing in a barbie doll to play with at school with my friends. They was always something- I remember yoyo's, spongy balls that could be squished and bounced.

Fireworks91 · 02/09/2018 14:10

Circle can you tell me more about the capsule? I've tried googling but can't see them, I think my 8 yr old might like them

YeetusLOLOL · 02/09/2018 19:58

omds. (y'all mums prob don't know what that means lel.)
use real slang fgs.

i can tell you in the years i have been alive, i have never, ever heard any normal person use the slang DD or any other. I actually had to look it up jeez.

IAmLordVoldemort · 02/09/2018 20:14

My 3.5 year old hasn’t discovered these yet. Right up her street though. I might get her one for Christmas.

I absolutely adore buying stuff for my girls. I get such pleasure from it. It drives DH mad. I’m trying to reign it in. Honest.

FranticallyPeaceful · 02/09/2018 20:16

My niece gets them and they’re a ridiculous waste of money

Ansumpasty · 02/09/2018 20:18

I actually really like them!

My 4 year old plays with them more than anything else.

I secretly would love them for myself and might just get a teeny bit excited when she’s opening the balls. Who am I kidding- I get very excited and help her open them Grin

Atthebottomofthegarden · 02/09/2018 20:23

My 10 year old loves them, and has just saved up and bought herself the series 4 capsule one. I must admit I don’t really see the appeal, but she really loves them and she does play with them. She has about 10 big ones and maybe 8 lil sisters.

Slightly hesitant to buy too many though as I think she’ll grow out of them quite soon!

The fakes look awful, the LQL dolls. All over eBay and Amazon.

LilMadAgain · 02/09/2018 20:53

ansum I have the same problem,i like opening them and my son plays with them (with me Blush) for hours. Do you keep ice cubes in a bowl for the colour changes? Grin

sleepismysuperpower · 02/09/2018 22:46

here is an example of one of the capsules. you can get 'big sisters' (larger sized dolls) or little sisters (smaller size) as well as pets.

Mine like the little tiny hatchimals. They get them for rewards for filling their marble jar and I only buy them because they do play with them. We've avoided the LOL dolls craze so far.

Ansumpasty · 03/09/2018 07:22

@LilMadAgain

I actually don’t like getting them wet incase inside the head gets that black mould, which makes me a meanie in my 4yo’s eyes Smile
I have bought her a cute little wall storage for them and make sure they’re all back in their spots at the end of the day 😂 I’m so sad

Starlight345 · 03/09/2018 07:26

Do you remember pippa dolls ? Op.

I was talking to a friend about Holly hobby we both had them trends were always there.

merrygoround51 · 03/09/2018 09:54

My youngest has some but I have never discussed them with other parents. Just buy them for her, let her play with them and leave it at that

LilMadAgain · 03/09/2018 10:51

Ansum not sad in the slightest. I hadn't considered the bleurgh black mold! I did watch an unboxing of the house but even I draw the line, it's not worth almost £200 quid! Not even if I take off my glasses and see double of everything Grin

KurriKurri · 03/09/2018 11:19

I think a tenner is quite a lot for a little collectible type toy where you don;t know what you are getting (I assume this is what they are - i'm way past this stage as my kids are grown up) for mine the little treat type items were about 50p to a quid. (mini boglins, puppy in my pocket, football stickers, comics, pogs etc) they were things a child could chooce to buy with their pocket money.

Ten pounds seems like a bigger toy to me (birthday present sized or save up for a long time sized present) and I think the fact that you don't know what you are getting is such a cynical marketing ploy to keep kids wanting more and more, I'd avoid like the plague. Ten pounds is quite a lot of money to people on a lower budget, so all the people saying 'don't be stingy' have obviously got money to waste.

They generally end up being banned at school because kids trick each other into swapping rare ones etc, and it all gets out of hand.

longestlurkerever · 03/09/2018 11:41

Yes the don't be stingy comments surprised me. I'm on a reasonable salary and treat my kids to ice creams or trips out and maybe the odd comic. We often go charity shopping where I'll buy pretty much anything in decent nick if they're keen but I wouldn't just fork out a tenner for plastic tat on a regular basis and don't really think this is something to be guilted into.

stellabird · 03/09/2018 11:56

HolidayHelpPlease yes, it's the "unboxing" which is the thrill . Buying on Ebay just isn't the same thing. My DD has about 10 - a waste of money I know but she loves them and plays with them all the time.
