Walking 2 hours a day?

Shartnado · 28/08/2018 22:37

Am I off my rocker thinking I could walk for 2 hours a day for getting to and from work?

I've checked on google maps and work is 3.1 miles away which it calculates as a 1 hour 2 min walk. Is it sensible to be considering walking there and back or have I got no chance?

Stats are 5ft 2 currently weighing around 15stone Blush so trying to look at ways to incorporate exercise into daily life. My commute on the bus currently takes 45 mins so it's only slightly more time effective potentially (providing that the maps estimate is accurate!)

Do it! Great for your health, and you'll save money too!

NapQueen · 28/08/2018 22:40

Do it! Download yourself some good podcasts and enjoy.q

9amTrain · 28/08/2018 22:40

It's fine, unless you have health problems it's not a reason for concern in the slightest.

garethsouthgatesmrs · 28/08/2018 22:42

Absolutely. Or could you invest in a bike? Go for it.

BlueSuffragette · 28/08/2018 22:42

Yes get walking but first make sure you have comfortable shoes...

EggsRoyale · 28/08/2018 22:42

Used to do his before children and loved it. Time to just chill and reflect or listen to podcasts. Can't do it now kids need dropping at school/nursery (and have piled the pounds on too Blush) and really miss it

Nacreous · 28/08/2018 22:43

Sounds doable to me! You’ll want decent waterproofs inc a brimmed hat in winter and good waterproof shoes. Maybe you could start by walking one way, bus the other, so it doesn’t make you ache too much to start with, so it’s not off putting?

I would also consider cycling as that would take less than half an hour. (I can do 1.5 miles in 9 mins, including traffic lights.) it’s more unpleasant in bad weather though.

I am switching to a person-powered commute (will be 1.5 miles down from 50 currently), and one of the interesting ideas I’ve come across is having one “cheat day” a week, so you can get the bus when you’re especially tired.

garethsouthgatesmrs · 28/08/2018 22:43

You could just walk in and get a bus home
That would still be one hour a day!

OwlinaTree · 28/08/2018 22:43

No it would be enjoyable. You will need some good waterproofs. Will you have to walk in the dark? Is the route safe in the dark, ie are there pavements, Street lights etc?

ethelfleda · 28/08/2018 22:43

Fair play - go for it and enjoy it!

Aquamarine1029 · 28/08/2018 22:43

This would absolutely be the best thing you could do for yourself. Combine that with eating a healthy diet and watching your caloric intake, and you can see massive results in just a couple of months time. It will be an adjustment at first. You'll be tired and might feel like giving up, but don't! Before you know it that walk will be a piece of cake.

BlairWaldorfsHeadband · 28/08/2018 22:43

It’s possible. I would get really pissed off by it though. I like to read a book and relax on the way home!

ethelfleda · 28/08/2018 22:44

I love walking. I listen to lectures on the great courses app or listen to language CDs (or th digital equivalent!) you can do so much with that time every day.

BlairWaldorfsHeadband · 28/08/2018 22:44

Before you know it that walk will be a piece of cake.
Lol, bad choice of phrasing for someone trying to lose weight.

EggsRoyale · 28/08/2018 22:45

Also, 1hr for 3miles is pretty reasonable. I used to so 4miles in an hour at an not unreasonable pace so you could definitely work to get the time down to closer to 45mins over time

Immigrantsong · 28/08/2018 22:45

I used to do that and loved it. However a word of warning; it may take you much longer in the beginning if unfit, so do a trial if possible. Good for you OP!

Grasslands · 28/08/2018 22:47

Start by checking with your Dr., for the first two weeks I’d bus in and walk home. After a brisk walk you may feel sweaty.

Timeisslippingaway · 28/08/2018 22:47

If you want fast you could do it in less. I walked 3.1 miles today and it took me about 45 mins and half a mile of that was with kids up a massive hill to school with a pram. You can do it no problem. It doesn't seem as far when you are actually walking it.

enbh · 28/08/2018 22:47

Go for it! Free and good exercise! Sounds like a sensible plan to me Smile

Tessliketrees · 28/08/2018 22:49

A couple of my friends are dom care workers and I know they can clock up around 4 hours on foot a day! You'll be fine, even with waterproofs you may want a brolly too, it's just easier for when you get to work.

BoogieFeet · 28/08/2018 22:49

Great idea. For years I had a nice walk to and from work and I really miss it. It’s not just that the exercise will make you feel better, and help you lose weight. You’ll have a less stressful commute, save money, get some headspace..
If you are nervous about it then you can always ease yourself in by doing 3 days on foot for the first week and then increase.
I think as you get used to it you may even find that it doesn’t take you any longer than the bus journey.

Cloglover · 28/08/2018 22:50

An hour commute each way is acceptable whether its walking, car or bus. Go for it!

CheekyChinchilla · 28/08/2018 22:50

Definitely go for it! I used to live and work in Edinburgh and the traffic was awful. I quickly realised that it was quicker for me to walk the five miles each way to work than it was to sit on the bus. That year was the fittest I’ve ever been.

Paradyning · 28/08/2018 22:51

Sounds amazing. Very jealous. Just make sure that you are well equipped.
Decent gore tex walking trainers, gore tex jacket etc. Then change of clothes once at work.
And a back up plan, like a bus route at least some of the way should you feel like crap, or it's suddenly starts a downpour, or whatever else.

FASH84 · 28/08/2018 22:51

I agree with PP it might take you an hour initially but you'll get that time down I used to walk just over two miles to work and it took about half an hour in the end, I started when I broke my wrist and couldn't drive, then loved it so kept it up, I also listened to podcasts or music and would get to work in a much better mood, I also found it gave me more waist definition and I lost half a stone within a month without changing anything else, get yourself a backpack too if you don't already have one, you don't want to be carrying your things lopsided as you'll hurt your back. I was disappointed when I was relocated thirty miles away and couldn't do it anymore!
