I bring some toilet roll, some kitchen roll, some detergent (chinese food container size) and some dishwasher tablets.

Reason being, I love wandering around foreign supermarkets, but if I have to buy any of the above it is just too mundane.

I bring similar - kitchen roll, cling film, bin liners, a few dishwasher tablets, a few washing machine tablets, mostly because I have these at home anyway, so just chuck them in - saves having to buy whole packs when away.

Many years ago, I can remember travelling abroad with my parents who brought packs of bacon, and packs of butter in the suitcase - frozen so they’d last the journey!

I always carry decent teabags. I dislike the ghastly Lipton’s tea that is often proffered so just use my own decent Assam instead.

Some dried mixed herbs, cooking oil. Herbal tea. Where I’m staying at the moment has provided one black bin bag, but no spares to fit the small specially sized kitchen bin that’s fitted in a cupboard. That’s annoying.
On the opposite side though, I’ve noticed that holiday properties (like this one) tend to provide large numbers of egg cups, a three tiered vegetable steamer and proper cups and saucers.

Cleaning wipes.

The reason why I prefer hotels! Last time we self catered it was with my mother so cue a months worth of conversations over who was bringing what - I'm insisting that our next family gathering is half board. Dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, cloths and sponges, washing machine tablets, tea bags, coffee beans, dog food, jam, ketchup, oil - endless list (we were driving).

Polkapjs · 28/08/2018 22:18

Hateful amounts of stuff get into my bag if self catering. All the above stuff pp mentioned plus cleaning spray and scourers. Dull as chuff

Last year we stayed in a self catered villa where the cupboards were completely bare, not even a salt shaker. I was surprised as most places I've stayed in before there's been salt and pepper, a couple of dishwasher tablets to keep you going etc. This year we're going with the same company again (we fly on Saturday!) and I'm prepared, I'm taking:

7x dishwasher tablets
A few scoops of washing powder (fairly recently potty trained DS so will def need to do a few loads)
Salt and ketchup sachets, pilfered from pubs and cafes recently
Teabags - agree with previous poster that European ones are shite

I’m a frequent traveller for work and I never, ever leave the country without a stash of Yorkshire Tea bags.

ihatethecold · 28/08/2018 22:33

I’m off to Crete tomorrow for an all inclusive short break. I’ve already packed my Yorkshire tea bags.

Teabags, even though I live in France so don’t always have a ready supply (or perhaps because I live in France so realise the importance). I wish we had brought toilet rolls. DH who never does the shopping was sent to find one thing - toilet rolls. It wasn’t until I get back I found instead of a nice good quality soft toilet we had rough bargain kitchen rolls to wipe ourselves with Grin
