....to pawn my ring?

So back when I was 16 my first ever boyfriend surprised me at xmas with a white gold diamond ring 💍

It wasn't an engagement ring, but something he had saved up for a long time for. At the time it was the beautiful thing I'd ever received and still holds

I sold my first lot of wedding rings and went on a lovely holiday but be warned.....you get less than 1/3 of the retail ‘value’

Reaa · 28/08/2018 09:26

holds......

GinPink · 28/08/2018 09:29

Oops posted too soon

... still holds sentimental value.

However well over a decade later I now a married (to someone else) Mum and am into the last stretch of maternity leave. We planned well to be financially ok but due to bf I would like to extend a bit more than planned, so we are selling bits and pieces we don't use anymore to find an extra month or so.

I'm looking at my ring which I haven't worn in years and years, wondering why I've kept it but also would be a bit sad to sell this. I'm totally over the guy, it's just it reminds me of being young, in love and someone surprising me with something lovely.

AIBU to keep it? Or AIBU to sell it?

You probably won't get that much for it. I took an engagement ring to a pawn shop and got about £100 iirc.

So if it's got huge sentimental value it might not be worth it.

LeroyJenkins · 28/08/2018 09:30

You'll be very disappointed with what you are offered, diamonds won't get you anything, maybe try eBay?

GinPink · 28/08/2018 09:32

Ah I see, the diamond is minuscule, there's quite a bit of gold though. I'd assume they'd melt it down to re cast...

Reaa · 28/08/2018 09:33

Keep it, it makes you happy to look at it.

Thehop · 28/08/2018 09:38

You get the weigh in value of the gold if the diamond isn’t special.

usernamenamename · 28/08/2018 10:38

You may as well keep it for the tiny amount they give you when you pawn a ring

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/08/2018 10:44

Keep it it makes you happy to look at

That's as maybe, Reaa but Sentiments and memorabilia don't pay the bills, do they

Racecardriver · 28/08/2018 10:47

You won't get much for it. I would keep it for an emergency.

gerispringer · 28/08/2018 10:53

Take a photo of it and sell it. You wont get much for it but it might get something for the baby.

ReanimatedSGB · 28/08/2018 10:53

The thing is with having pawnable stuff: you can pawn it when you are desperately short of money and the worst that can happen is you don't get it back. It's probably worth hanging on to it and pawning rather than selling on those grounds alone.

Pawning stuff is a much better option than payday loans, simply because they can't come after you and hit you with late payment and extra charges.

Dontletthebastardsgrindyoudown · 28/08/2018 10:55

Have it valued by a very reputable jeweller. Pawn brokers just want to give you the lowest amount they can for it.

GinPink · 28/08/2018 11:09

I've now come to the conclusion I'm probably way over valuing it based on the sentiment, it's probably worth peanuts. I'll take it along for a valuation, and then decide 😊

Also thanks all for your input

Fuzzywig · 28/08/2018 11:31

i personally would keep it but if you decide to get a price to sell and a price to pawn. If you pawn it you will probably get a better price then you decide if you go back for it or not.

premiertav · 28/08/2018 11:57

I'd assume they'd melt it down to re cast...

Not if you pawn it they won't. Unless you intend not going back for it, in which case just sell it?

booklover21 · 28/08/2018 20:19

I took a £3k diamond platinum 0.5ct engagement ring to sell in a range of places and only got offered about £100. Loved the diamond but wasn't happy with the setting. Ended up scrapping the metal, keeping the diamond (stores will only give you the value of the gold not the diamond anyway) and getting it reset by the jeweller (cost around £800). Keep the ring - you'll get peanuts and it's got memories for you. Enjoy the rest of your maternity leave!

Icklepup · 28/08/2018 20:22

I'd keep it, it's special.
