I doubt I’ll ever do it but AIBU to have a dream of living a life abroad ... just packing and leaving.

How can you possibly be unreasonable to have this ambition? Your life, your choice.

Out of interest where are you wanting to go to? Are you likely to be allowed to immigrate there?

girlwithadragontattoo · 27/08/2018 13:24

I did this Smile i moved to Portugal, though I'm lucky as my Partner is Portuguese and i had a small amount of savings and somewhere to stay until i got back on my feet with a job etc..
Best thing i ever did!

Costacoffeeplease · 27/08/2018 13:24

We did it too, also moved to Portugal. Been here 15 years now and applied for citizenship

rainingcatsanddog · 27/08/2018 13:26

Of course not.

Millions do this- even Brits who are notoriously bad at foreign languages.

I've done this with and without kids. I highly recommend that you go for it.

Roussette · 27/08/2018 13:31

I think it's a great thing to do if that's what you want. However, if you have some problems and you think that going to live somewhere else will solve everything, that is not a good reason. Your problems just travel with you!

candiedfruit · 27/08/2018 13:47

I wouldn’t be able to - it’s a bit of a hopeless dream Grin

justmetwice · 27/08/2018 13:48

Serious question... Why won't you be able to do it? What keeps you from doing it?

cardibach · 27/08/2018 13:48

Why wouldn’t you be able to candied?

candiedfruit · 27/08/2018 13:50

Work and I don’t speak the language anywhere near well enough.

I’ve done it and lived in three countries properly (travelled through others). Back in uk now, to stay I think.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 27/08/2018 13:58

I have done this 6 times in my life Grin

On my own twice, with DP and then with kids in tow too

I got myself a TEFL certificate to be employable abroad (teaching English is also a really nice way to meet local people), and learned most of my languages at destination (there are often cheap language/integration courses, SWeden Spain used to offer free language courses for example)

It is a matter of just doing it. I loved it, love figuring out a new culture and language!

Start saving up, so you have some back up.

MorseandLewis · 28/08/2018 05:28

What skills/qualifications do you have and which countries would they enable you to have a working visa?

That is the starting point, unless you can get working in an eu country and paying tax there in the next couple of months,

lola006 · 28/08/2018 09:07

I did it! Left a Commonwealth Country for the U.K. at 21 and wound up meeting DH here almost straight away. It’s hard being away from my family but Skype/FaceTime/WhatsApp all make it easier.

Depending on where you want to go, check out visas and see if you can make it happen.

Thehop · 28/08/2018 09:08

We’re doing it! We have a 5 year plan to wrap up here and clear debt then go

BMW6 · 28/08/2018 15:44

Why not learn the language and apply for jobs in your field of expertise?
