What goes through people's heads on their phones driving

I'm livid. Kids in car on long drive. Refuelling at a service station and a man in a van with two teenagers sat next to him is driving on the road that slips back on to the motorway having a conversation with his phone held at his ear driving all over the place. That's how he's driving onto the motorway.
I'm livid
I've seen so much of it today
Why???

They’re late, they’re convincing the boss they’re working when they’re dropping the kids off, a million things other than that they are risking killing someone. Including their own kids and themselves.
It took a generation to convince people drink driving was dangerous, so we’ve got at least 30 years to go before some people stop thinking they know best. Sad

iklboo · 27/08/2018 13:16

Last week we saw a woman driving while on the phone and a dog on her lap.

Move2WY · 27/08/2018 13:17

This is my number one hate. People know they shouldn’t do it. They can see they’re driving wobbly. My dh nearly got hit from the side on the motorway because of drifting due to the guy being on his mobile.

It’s just idiotic. And they won’t stop til they kill someone unfortunately. I hate hate hate it.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 27/08/2018 13:20

Their steering wheel. I'm not even joking.

I see it more than ever and it's usually people in their 40s and older which I find even more shocking.

BMW6 · 27/08/2018 13:23

I wouldn't object to it at all if the only lives they were putting at risk was their own.

If anyone reading this ever uses their phone while driving - you are a self-centered irresponsible fool and I sincerely hope karma gets your ass.

backstreetboysareback · 27/08/2018 14:23

I don't know if it's triggered me.

I'm pregnant with dc3. When heavily pregnant with dc2 I was driving on the motorway and the man in the next car was swerving all over the place txting while driving.
I spent too much time watching what he was doing the car infront slowed quickly and I ran up the back of them Blush

I'm not even a nervous driver I just think people have such a fucking cheek doing it especially truck drivers and people in company vans

That's one reason why i have a dash cam. I'd like one at the back too with a giant red light so everyone knowsbtheyre being recorded

TheSultanofPingu · 27/08/2018 16:21

I see it all the time when out walking. It should be a years outright driving ban imo.

I had someone call me last week for work. The reception was really bad and I said I couldn't hear. She said she was driving so I just said "well could you call me when you've stopped because I can't hear you" and put the phone down. But actually it was a convenient excuse, I won't talk to people if I know they are driving, hands-free or not.

Unless everyone does this, people will continue to think it's ok to use their phones in the car. Though texting is even worse than talking.

Ava1988 · 27/08/2018 17:14

Sadly I think a lot of people are addicted to their phones and can't go even short journeys without checking them. People say...what if it's an emergency etc...but it was never that easy to get hold of someone in the past. Is really sad that people don't see how dangerous it is!

RayRayBidet · 27/08/2018 17:22

Fucking texting while driving gives me rage. I mean seriously, how can any person think that is OK? At 70mph. On the motorway.
Fucking wankers

bluemascara · 27/08/2018 17:25

I seen a guy once who had wedged his phone against the display but behind the steering wheel... he was watching a tv show on it whilst driving!!??
Also, back in the day I seen a woman reading a book whilst driving on the motorway
It really is astonishing

HashTagLil · 27/08/2018 17:29

Saw a woman undercut a lorry turning left on to a motorway slip-road this morning. As we went past her on the motorway, she was busy applying her lipgloss in her visor mirror. Stupid bitch! How she didn't get wiped out by the lorry (she was in his blind spot) I'll never know.

specialsubject · 27/08/2018 17:34

it is unbelievable , isnt it? so many deaths ( murders as not accident) and still they do it.

when I am president it will be a life driving ban for using phone at wheel. anyone ignoring it will get five years no parole . it is that serious.

Fairylea · 27/08/2018 17:37

I hate this so much too.

I think it should be an outright lifelong ban if you get caught. No reason it is ever acceptable and people know that.

MustBeThin · 27/08/2018 17:40

The amount of people I see texting or making calls while driving is ridiculous! Why do they do it? What on earth is so important that you would put your own life and other people's in danger? It gives me the rage. Every single time I get in the car I put my phone on silent, if you can't hear texts or phone calls coming through then you can never be tempted to pick it up. And all those people that think it's ok to send a quick text or make a quick call while waiting at red lights you are twats too. You still aren't supposed to do it and it's extremely irritating when the lights change green and you are to engrossed in your phone to realise.

Scientistic · 27/08/2018 17:48

We saw one person on the m25 texting at the wheel in a massive lorry. If you ever see someone in a branded vehicle, contact the company to complain. If they're on a work phone the likelihood is records will confirm it, and action will be taken. Even if nothing is done, you've done the right thing.

My very small dc was nearly killed by someone overtaking a car that was already overtaking a parked car while on his phoned. He ended up on the pavement. Quick thinking grandad picked him up and threw dc out of the way. We contacted the company and went to town on him being disciplined. He was using his own phone so no records but they have all work records and said it would have been instant dismissal if it had been proven. He was disciplined either way. The company were very good - your worst case scenario is that they do nothing, so no harm reporting it. Haulage companies should take this extremely seriously too.

If it's a car I honk the horn and get the hell out of their way.

backstreetboysareback · 27/08/2018 17:48

It fucks me off so much.
My 2 dc both have car seats that I've spent hundreds on so they are as safe as possible. I go without to keep them safe , I'm not boasting just making the point that you do all you can to keep your kids safe and then pull on to a road with people like that.
Fucks me off so much

gamerwidow · 27/08/2018 17:54

It’s arrogance, they think they’re in control and an accident won’t happen to them. Or they think I’ve done this loads of times and been fine so it’s not unsafe. Twats.

Fairylea · 27/08/2018 17:54

There was that horrendous accident where I think 5 members of the same family died when a lorry went into the back of their car because he was distracted changing the tune on his iPhone! Sad

Yoksha · 27/08/2018 18:04

Harsher laws. Car impounded & crushed if you cause an accident. Severe fine if simply caught. Hit them in the pocket. If people die because of such stupidity, then I leave these decisions to law makers.

Also, zero tolerance to driving under the influence of drink and or drugs.

Public information films to inform all of us. So there'll be no "we didn't know, we weren't aware" brigade.

specialsubject · 27/08/2018 21:54

lorry drivers used to be so good, now so many are on the phone. they dont die in the crashes they cause. if you are able to note details of a phone using lorry driver ( i.e. you are a passenger) pleqse call the company and make it clear that you want action, i.e. a sacking. The police on 101 can also look out for the driver if you are on a motorway with cameras. Again you must be a passenger. having nearly been killed by a lorry driver on the phone I hope the cops did get him.

megletthesecond · 27/08/2018 22:00

Nothing. Empty brains the lot of them.

I'm glued to my phone, take it to the toilet etc. But not once, ever has it occurred to me to check or touch it when driving. Even when it was quite possibly my family calling from the hospice when my dad was dying. I waited until I parked to check my phone.

Any mobile phone use when driving should be a permanent ban. No excuses.

glintandglide · 27/08/2018 22:02

I agree with seniorschoolmum busy frustrated, stressed, late, - as long as people can do it they will. They know it’s wrong but they feel justified by their circumstances
