to ask what has bitten me?

Second night in a static van. There are hundreds of mosquitoes around but I’ve been sleeping under a duvet, surely they wouldn’t have bitten my knees? Confused

Not itchy at all.

I also have bites on my face but they’re not so obvious. A few on my hands. DH doesn’t appear to have anything much, one DC’s cheeks are covered in red spots like a sprinkling of freckles.

What are they?

I would have probably said flea bites (would have expected them to be bit itchy though.)

birthdaygirls · 27/08/2018 11:24

Have you all had chicken pox?

Triskaidekaphilia · 27/08/2018 11:24

Any larger patches op or is it all spots?

SilkeOvesen · 27/08/2018 11:26

Yes we’ve all had chicken pox. No larger patches, just big & small spots.

I don't know, I think it could be bed bugs. They tend to bite in trails like that apparently. And if the last people complained of "mosquito bites" they might have been bitten as well.

When you get home I'd keep all your stuff outside in bin bags until you can run it through the wash just in case. Anything which can't be machine washed you can either put in the freezer for 24 hours or outside in direct sunlight inside a black bin bag (greenhouse effect).

ChristmasFluff · 27/08/2018 11:52

Probably not helpful, but that's an awful lot of bites overnight for either bedbugs or fleas. I've had both and only had a couple of bed bug bites (massive), and although that looks like how flea bites start, again, we've been infested and not had as many as that - I would think if you pull back the sheets you would see them if it is fleas. We saw them with much fewer bites. Flea bites start little then get big and itchy.

I hasten to add these have been holiday experiences, I'm not in an infested home :-D

Allergic reaction of some kind? Soap powder? Has LO been rubbing his eyes?

Jammiebammie · 27/08/2018 11:56

Could it possibly be scabies? I’m looking online at pictures and some look similar, or flea bites.
It does sound like some sort of infestation unfortunately if your dd has it too.

Could you visit a pharmacy for advice?

Daisymalone · 27/08/2018 12:01

I've been bitten to death by bed bugs in my backpacking days and they really really itch! If it was bed bugs you would see little splodges of blood on the sheets where you roll on them and crush them, plus they are quite visible to the naked eye!

Vicky1990 · 27/08/2018 12:03

They look like midge bites to me.
Are you set up in a grass field?.
We went to Scotland with our caravan for a two week holiday, but came home after a week due to the midges.

SilkeOvesen · 27/08/2018 12:06

I think we might end up at the pharmacy because I’m mystified!

DS’s face. Yesterday was just his cheeks, today eyelids as well. He feels fine, no itching or anything. Can’t really see any spots anywhere else on him.

His spots are much smaller than mine.

When we had bed bugs they bit me everywhere that was uncovered by my pjs in bed - hands, face, legs (short pjs as summer) and up my forearms. I got bitten a lot more than DH (I must taste delicious) and when he did start getting bitten his bites didn't itch, while mine drove me crazy. The pacement of the bites on you and your son does make me twitch a bit. Move your stuff well out the way and check the seams of matresses/joins of the bed etc. for little red/brown/black dots (bed bug faeces is full of blood components). I really hope it isn't.

SilkeOvesen · 27/08/2018 12:11

daisymalone the sheets here are dark! We will definitely be investigating the mattress later though.

The site owners are very friendly and helpful, if they KNEW there was something here they would take action but perhaps they just don’t know! We’re here for a week so hopefully if it’s bed bugs/scabies we can take appropriate precautions before leaving.

Pharmacy tomorrow I think.

I've been bitten by bedbugs in Australia. Looked like yours did, and mine didn't itch.
They come out at night.. when I pulled the mattress up, you could see them on the frame! Awful things.

Daisymalone · 27/08/2018 12:28

Wow you people are so lucky who don't react to bed bug bites! Mine turned into massive weeping lumps (I react badly to all bites since then) that left tiny scars in some places! I'm actually getting itchy just talking about it....

Poppy123xyz · 27/08/2018 12:29

It doesn't look like bedbugs. I had them once, they itched like you wouldnt believe, blistered, my gp winced when she saw my arm. I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy. Fleas?

Ladylimpet · 27/08/2018 12:37

It was strange I didn't react to the bedbugs, as the mossies ate me alive and itched like crazy!

Vicky1990 · 27/08/2018 12:39

One method I have used to prevent getting bitten by insects in bed is to remove the duvet from its cover, and then get into the cover to sleep, putting the duvet over the top.
This will prevent any insects from biting your body at least, of course your head will be uncovered.
Before going to bed look all around the static looking for midges etc, and keep all doors and windows shut during the day.

SilkeOvesen · 27/08/2018 12:39

Surely if it was bed bugs there wouldn’t be so many bites? Clutching at straws here.

Feeling like packing up and going home now, which won’t help if it’s bed bugs!

I’m a country girl originally and I’m not scared of a few fleas but nooooooo! Not bed bugs!

XiCi · 27/08/2018 12:42

They don't look like bites to me. I've had bedbug and flea bites and they are bigger than that and they really itch. Can you not go to a walk in clinic today?

SilkeOvesen · 27/08/2018 12:44

The van has seriously been teeming with these mosquitoes the last 2 nights. Suddenly all gone today. We’ve had citronella candles and fly swatters but couldn’t get rid of them all. I mean there were a hundred or more.

Thats not scabies

SilkeOvesen · 27/08/2018 12:46

xici do you mean the ones on my son?

I know what you mean, but in combination with them appearing the morning after our first night here, and with both DD and I having them too, they’re surely a bite of some kind?

longwayoff · 27/08/2018 12:47

Gotta stop reading, making me itch. Good luck use antihistamine whatever it is..
