...to think she should have mentioned the cat???

We arrived at our holiday villa in Greece last night quite late, In the dark. Lovely owner came and met us, showed us round the villa, explained how to work the air conditioning, when the pool guy would turn up etc. Also left lots of lovely things for us - beer wine, Jams, honey, butter, bread, selection of English tea. Her English was excellent. She told us that if we had any problems to call her and she would come but she lives about an hour away. All good and lovely.

We've woken up this morning to the sound
scratcing at the front door. Went out to investigate and there is a cat sitting there. Not a feral cat - plenty of those around and they are very thin and mangy. This cat is sleek, well fed and has a collar and bell, so clearly belongs to someone. She then walks very expectantly over to a cupboard under the porch where I realise there's a pile of foil trays of cat food and then next to the cupboard are two bowls, one with water in and one which clearly is used for cat food. Hadn't noticed these last night as it was dark. And the owner didn't mention it.

So, it appears that the cat comes with the villa. That's ok, we are cat lovers so not a big deal. But is it not a bit odd for the owner not to mention it? Also, the cat food will last 3 days if we feed her twice a day so we'll need to go and buy more cat food.

Just got back from the beach via the minimarket where we picked up cat food. Cat was waiting for us when we got back. No sign of cat hairs in the villa, and we won't let her inside as it's not fair on the next lot of guests.
We've got cats of our own back home so no issue with feeding her, but given the owner explained the workings of the coffee machine in detail I thought she'd habe mentioned the cat!
She is a little cutey andc weve named her Chloe for the duration of the holiday

She looks adorable!

ahh I'd love this, we don't have a cat and I wouldn't say I am a cat lover but I love all animals and would make a point of feeding and caring for the cat who is very cute. We stayed in a cottage a few years ago with about a dozen chickens, by the time we left we'd named them all and it absolutely made our holiday (yes we are that sad).

Well, mystery (partially) solved. The owner emailed us last night to ask if everything was ok with the house, and when we responded we did mention the cat. Turns out it does belong to her! She says we can feed it "if we want". Given the cat is waiting expectantly for food morning and evening i dont feel we've got any choice. Which is fine with us as she's a sweetie and we like cats. I just hope the next people renting the villa feel the same way.

What's weird is that the owner's husband and her family live in Athens full time, the owner told us she stays in this area during the summer and goes back to Athens during the winter and the house isn't hired out then. So does the cat go back to Athens for the winter - and if so why doesn't it live there permanently? Or why doesn't it live with the owner in the summer wherever she stays rather than in the house they rent out?

I've now got more questions than answers but not sure I can quiz the owner by email over the cats living arrangements! In the meantime we'll enjoy having her around

Bizarre. Where does the cat sleep? Will they reimburse you for cat food?

My son is very allergic to cats so I'd be unhappy to have a cat in the villa but I'd be happy to feed it although my son would be tempted to cuddle it as he loves cats but can't.

I'm laughing that we can never go to Greece with his allergies 😂🤭

I expect the cat gets fed somewhere else in the winter. Some other cultures don't have the same approach to pet ownership as we do. Often stray cats will get adopted but the new 'owner' won't take full responsibility so if they go away they expect the cat to fend for themselves- they usually can as well.

You need to make it clear in your feedback that she has to tell guests up front about the cat and also put it in your
Public review for other guests.

There are lots of stray cats around, this one is three times the size of them. She has an amazingly glossy coat so she's clearly eating well. She's got a collar with bell, you can hear her coming a way off so I suspect she would find it difficult to hunt.

I will ask the owner when we check out what happens to the cat in winter/When there are no guests.
