Should the gardener pick up the dog poo as part of their 'duties'?

My DH works part time as a gardener for a couple of wealthy people with large houses and gardens - he does each of them alternatively every other week. This has been a good arrangement for the past few years and works well with us as the rest of the time he takes care of our small farm and woodland. the farm does not make enough for it to be full time work but with this extra work it works all round. The properties are close, so he can pop down check animals etc and we've always got on well. Recently one of the houses got two big dogs. They let the dogs run free in the garden and I don't regularly walk them, just let them out in the garden to play (their admission). They now expect DH as part of normal gardening duties to pick up the two weeks worth of dog poo on each visit? They think he is being unreasonable in refusing, he thinks they are being unreasonable in asking. The arrangement does work really well in terms of the other parts of our life, but I agree with DH that this is more than a bit much and not the gardeners role! What do others think?

Categorically not.

Unless the owner is disabled.

onetimeposter · 26/08/2018 20:16

No. Thats disgusting.
You wouldnt ask someone to wipe your arse when they come to clean your house, nor would you leave piles of shit all over the floor.
Absolutely not acceptable

RedHelenB · 26/08/2018 20:16

Are they paying him more or is it by the hour? If he's not happy then maybe look for a different client.

JanuaryJuniper · 26/08/2018 20:17

Fuck no....they are being totally unreasonable!!!

Ohyesiam · 26/08/2018 20:17

There is no part of gardening that involves dog poo. Horse poo yes, dog poo uh uh.

sunstarsmoon · 26/08/2018 20:17

No he definitely shouldn't be picking up any dog poo!

Moominfan · 26/08/2018 20:18

If they can't be fucked picking up after their dogs they shouldn't have them. Absolute cheek of them

DramaAlpaca · 26/08/2018 20:19

Absolutely not. That's the dog owners' job.

JustGettingStarted · 26/08/2018 20:19

Let me guess, they didn't even offer extra cash?

KlutzyDraconequus · 26/08/2018 20:19

I'd do it.. but I'd be charging an extra hour to do so.

FadedRed · 26/08/2018 20:19

Absolutely not. No more than I would expect a cleaner to flush the lavatory after I used it, or pick up my dirty clothes.

Mammysin · 26/08/2018 20:19

No way! Poor animals stuck with their own filth for 2 weeks. Does he bring in their washing/ take the bins out/ paint the shed? Flaming entitled cheek!

DOTLEYtheONEeyedDINO · 26/08/2018 20:20

Two weeks worth of 2 big dogs poo could be quite a lot of poo. They are being unreasonable. They should supervise their dogs and pick up the poo more frequently. Picking up poo is not 'gardening'.

Needahairbrush · 26/08/2018 20:21

No, my DH is a gardener and refuses the job if there’s dog poos about. He tells the owner the garden must be clear for him to complete the job. If A poo is missed and he mows it by mistake it will be all over & in the blades and splatter him - utterly revolting.

PumpkinPie2016 · 26/08/2018 20:21

Definitely not!!

My husband does gardening for people and certainly wouldn't pick up dog poo.

He actually refused to continue cutting one lawn because of the dog poo that was constantly all over.

MsVestibule · 26/08/2018 20:21

Absolutely not! I can't believe they would even think this was a borderline reasonable request!

SicSay · 26/08/2018 20:21

Ha - ok so I can see most people seem to agree with us. It's annoying if he has to switch as it'll probably mean losing the garden next door as well (they are neighbours) but I just think they have been so disrespectful and entitled over the whole silly fiasco!

PurpleTigerLove · 26/08/2018 20:22

No it’s not his job ! Lazy feckers !

Whyohwhy65 · 26/08/2018 20:23

If you can't pick up your own dogs shit don't have a dog. I would refuse to do the gardening until it has been cleaned

MellowMelly · 26/08/2018 20:23

No way. He is a ‘Gardener’ which means tending to flower beds, shrubs etc...dog poo is not gardening.

A company used to come in and look after my lawn. I picked up any dog poo before they turned up!

What’s wrong with people and seriously two dogs pooping in a garden and it’s getting left for two weeks?

I can guarantee those dogs are regularly stepping in their own shit.

mariniere · 26/08/2018 20:23

The odd fox poo - probably yes. Two weeks of dog poo - absolutely not! He should find different clients!

Helpmemyhairisterrible · 26/08/2018 20:25

Self employed gardener here. I did it on one domestic garden for an elderly couple who were breeding little dogs. Only kept it on for a year because it was horrible. I would not want to take on another one with dogs. Most of my work is contracting now and I carry poo bags in my pocket. I do pick up on big sites. Your husband is not BU and the people he's working for are dirty and disrespectful.

PurpleTigerLove · 26/08/2018 20:26

Tell your husband to stick to his guns . He’ll find other work , they’re not going to find a gardener to pick up their dogs shite easily . Screw them !

Yoksha · 26/08/2018 20:26

No! Once again 👎
